I want to know the answer to the taxi question! I would guess middle of the back seat. Anyone know for sure?

Umm... no. The correct answer is you give the most important person the front seat.

Ever been in a Japanese taxi? They're as neat and clean as the rest of the country, drivers even wear white gloves.

Besides, this isn't New York City we're talking about.

And they can be the rudest people you'll ever meet too. Ever try paying with a large bill for moderately small fare? Try it and see the reaction (especially in Osaka). You will get something roughly translated as "why the hell don't you have small bills, get out of the car and go get change!"

I had heard they were ridiculously expensive so I avoided them on all my trips save for a quick cab ride to the train station in Nara.

This is easy. The person of highest seniority sits in the middle back seat. To their right and left with be a pair of attractive 20 year olds in (if the person of importance prefers women) shorts skirts, or (if the person of importance prefers men) assless chaps.

Remember - when impressing your important guests to make them feel comfortable when being driven places. Nothing says "comfort" like being squeezed into a small space next to really sexy people.

Smart move. I forget, but Tokyo cabs start at around 700 yen or so. This is somthing like $6. You are correct though in that they are always disturbingly clean.
