My PS2 will only read CD based games. How do I fix this?

Topic, please. I got this from a seller here and I think that the post office roughly handled the parcel, so upon receiving the PS2, it reads only CD games.
Is there a way to fix this? Do I need a new laser?
Help.

Cleaning the laser might temp. fix it.

Replacing the laser will most likely fix the problem.

Laser position adjusted, but it only reads burns and original PS2 games. I guess I am better off than before.
Thanks everyone.

it wont read original or burned PS One games? What modchip is installed in it? If its a DMS modchip you must hold certain buttons (as far as I know) to get certain things to boot up. Like hold O while it boots up for PS One games and hold Square for DVD movies while it boots up etc... each modchip is a bit different.

My ps2 has a DMS3 modchip installed, and i'm having the same problem, regardless of which button I press.

Are the DMS modchips capable of messing around with the laser? I had purchased a brand new ps2 just for the modding when I had mine done, and the laser seemed to go out of whack a lot sooner than it should have.

If you have a V9-V11 system (model number SCPH-5000x) you HAVE TO mod the control chip too or it will fry and take the laser with it if you use DVD-Rs. This will happen on a non-modded system as well if you watch DVD-R movies or use swap magic for burnt games. Crappy design, that's all.. It doesn't have anything at all to do with the mod chip other than modded systems get subjected to more DVD-Rs than non-modded ones. If you do this control chip mod however, you have the best system under the sun that will read all kinds of disks like a tank! In your case though, it unfortunately sounds like it is too late.

Well, it plays official games just fine, but when it comes to burned games it'll only read burned cd games, and none of the burned dvd games. The model number is SCPH-39001 so it sounds like i'm okay.. maybe everything just needs to be calibrated or something.

The 3900x models are the last ones with the old version of control chip that doesn't fry. Try a different brand of discs (-R, not +R) and burn them slowly, 2x max and try again. Also, try a cleaning disc..

We both own 39001 units with DMS3. I have to agree with Kunio, try Memorex DVD-R discs (NOT +R discs) and burn slow and you should be fine. Visit DMS3.com forums and download and install the last BETA Firmware 2.4b7 for DMS3 as well for best compatibility. Sounds like your system doesnt read your type of brand DVDrs. I personally got some DVDRs from someone that worked fine in the last slim model PS2 but not on my version 7 (39001).

I had a problem with another DVD read laser based console, when I adjust the potentiometer all was fixed. Just check if the PS2 has a pot if so, adjust it to a lower setting. :p

edit:

I just found this article with a basic google search check it out:
