Ive read a few of reveiws on this game and it seems most people think its a hard game.... It was hard the first few times i played it on the AES when i first got it, but i wouldnt think it was THAT hard!!! (it is really hard if you play it on MVS level 7 or 8) So since ive never read a single reveiw on this gaming saying anything other than it was "rediculously hard" i thought id ask here and see what you all think!! Ive made a poll.... :)

P.S. I will also note that i didnt get to the finish it with no continue over night, but ive played it ALOT of times.....

I think the difficulty is paced just right on this old school gem.. its progressive...but play it on MVS lev 4!!...7-8 are tremendously tough cookie!!...
I don't ever continue on this...i have been to the end of the last level....with the machine & muckly razzing around in a wheel chair!!?...that was some time ago tho...
Once you master the somersault dodge & dash...things are a little easier..
I think its a little forgiving too...as sometimes when the screen fills with bullets you can survive small nicks in your leg etc...you swear the bullet is going to snuff you...but you just see a small red mist!!.

Dead right NEO GOLD, its a challenge for sure!! I only ever had it on AES for about the first 6 years of play, and i reckon i played it almost every day for the first year. After that it was pretty easy, but i still cant get enough. Levels 7 and 8 on my MVS were just insane, but me and a friend have finished it a few times on Level 6 when my MVS machines were running. (i tried it on MVS level 1 just to see how easy it was and went from sart to finish only dying once when i miss-timed a lazer shot from Muckly's final weapon!!)

I remember when I first got nam, all of my friends were playing the snes & mega drive/genesis and I was playing the aes, they could not believe the amount of speech nam had, back in the days the neo was truly bigger badder better.

First Neo game I ever played, right when the MVS was introduced in arcades. I agree it does have a great difficulty curve, and the end is a total pain in the ass. It's all about mastering the combat roll.

I've only played it in MVS mode, and the major challenge there is that it stops giving you unlimited continues on the final boss.

Yeah, IIRC you can't even continue at all once you reach that point.

And it was very clear as well, there were a couple games that came later (obviously!!) that had abit muffled speach in them, a couple parts of Burning Fight was one i think..

Yep, thats true, no more continues and no more second player buy in once the lazer weapon comes out. MVS and AES were the same in this area. That was a good thing in a way though, cause it meant that just cause you got there with a few credits to spare on the AES (or with FREEPLAY on MVS) it didnt mean you had Muckly by the balls and were certain to win.

I'm not the god I once was at NAM-1975,
but I did find a way (through patience and
fune tuned skillz) to defeat Muckley's Death
Mobile/Nuclear Platform Walker without dying
and it's got more to do with (2) things...

#1> Making sure you have at least 3 lives
prior to fighting the walker machine.

#2> Knowing how to correctly dodge.

Everyone keeps saying "the combat roll" but
I disagree. Yeah, it's a must in getting to R.
Muckley throughout the game, but in my time
with NAM-1975 I found the combat roll to be
too slow and often times you'd have to realign
the sights in front of you after doing a roll. I found
that it's easier to dodge (moving quickly from side
to side) timing the volleys of missiles coming at you,
then stop, shoot three bullets into the thing, and
continue. At some point you'll miss the pattern
and get fried, that's why you need at least (3)
men. I doubt I could do it right now, but if I played
it every day the way I did in the Summer of '02 I
could prolly 1cc it again. I'm still upset a prequel
was never done like my wacky idea of
NAM-1965: Innocence Lost.
:(

EDIT* I forgot to mention that technique I use
sadly takes about 25 minutes to defeat him, possibly
a full half hour, so you'd better be quick and not let
up.

I agree with part of that yeah, (i dont roll unless im stuck in a corner) But 20-30 minutes to kill him??? (me and a couple mates played it again the other night, 1st time through on LEVEL 6 and we went start to finish in just over 20 minutes!!!!!)

I wouldve also loved to have seen a prequel or sequel of that game come out with simular gameplay, i always wondered why it said in the instruction book for the AES something about a NAM 1968?

Loved that game back in the day, nearly killed my friend and I to beat on the AES. Probably harder with two people because you can't keep muckly's pattern going as easily.

"You are not the enemy for my new weapon!"

So crazy that they stole that still from full metal jacket!
