I haven't kept up with it at all, but since Starfox 64 is the coolest thing ever and every other Starxfox after it sucked, I want it to be good.
I saw the commercial and was kinda worried; it doesn't look like it's on-rails like 64, and I've heard something like there's strategy involved? Bullshit, not in my Starfox.

So what's the word, anyone gonna buy it.

All I know is you move your ship with the touch screen and use the dpad to fire.

On rails?

64 had the dog fight arenas too. And Star Fox Assault rules.

For other examples of the on-rails genre, look at Rez or Panzer Dragoon (Zwei specifically, just because it's ace).

I played the first few stages of Assault at Best Buy and it didn't have that PIZAZZ that 64 had. And on-foot missions will always and forever suck ass.
64 had the dog fight arenas, and that rocked because either it was a boss or that huge Independence Day ship with a million enemies popping out. I'm just worried that Command is an entire arena game, but I'll check out some reviews that will quash my fears.

That's the clincher for me, and if it weren't on rails, that would seal not even a rental for me.

As soon as I heard there were strategy elements involved I decided to give it a pass. Strategy? In Star Fox? F**k that noise.

Picked this game up today. I am having a lot of fun with it. The touch screen works extremely well to control the ship, and the movement feels very natural. It is much easier to control than Star Fox 64 (haven't played the GC one). The strategy elements are basic. This is not Deep Fritz 7 Super Comptuer chess here. Wifi is fun, got a full game relatively quickly, and experienced no lag, albeit I got my ass handed to me. Anyway, another quality DS title to add to the library. It is quite amazing to see the amount of quality DS titles available. I am finding myself devoting most of my gaming time to that little white beauty (aside from hardcore Gokumakaimura sessions on the psp).

So is it like the 64 version or is it different (as far as being on rails etc.)?

The game is not on rails at all. The plot out a course on the level screen, then when you engage an enemy, you enter battle mode where it is completely free roaming. You have a general time limit in which you must complete the level.

Although it does sound like you're having fun with it, I've gotta say that's fucking gay. I wish Blockbuster or someone would have handheld rentals, 'cos that's the only way I'd be trying it out.
Thanks for the description, man.

I saw it at Fry's lastnight, but somehow it just wasn't all that appealing to me.

I was hoping for something along the lines of the N64 version, but the whole strategic planning thing had me saying WTF...

I picked it up yesterday and just love it. I was a little worried about the strategy aspect of it, but I think it really works well. Controls well once you get used to doing everything from the touch screen. Only thing not on the touch screen is regular firing.

I havent taken it online since i know my ass will be kicked. I am not comfortable with dogfighting, yet.

I say its pretty impressive. The strategy is a little something extra and doesnt take away from the feel of the game. But if you're wrong on your strategy, you just restart that level. No biggie.

Hmmm,I guess I'll give it a try. If it's anything like the N64 presentation-wise,then I'm a happy camper.

I saw the commercials for star fox and reserved my opinion, but if you say its good maybe I'll look into it. Wouldn't mind playing a shooter on DS for a change.

I really didnt play the 64 one all that much, but from what I played of it I liked. I was a huge SNES SF fan. I think the EB in my town had it on the demo system. The stylus control is the thing you'll have to get over, at least it was for me.

I gotta go, i am sitting in my car at this wooded park and there is some freaky guy pacing in front of my car pulling at the crotch of his pants. I need a new place to play games....

This is what I can report on the game.

You start the mission laying out a route to take. And there is certain objectives in each level. And you get a certain amount of turns. And ever level seems like a big open field.

I like the rails more personally. But I can live with this.

The online ability seems to be great though. I played one game and it is a rush for the center items at the very beginning.

I guess I don't know what a Rail Shooter is.....

I always thought that Rail Shooter meant that you can't move your Dude at all...

Its a shooter along a path. Like Panzer dragoon.

I did a wiki check to see if they agreed with me, and they do.
I've always called Space Harrier, Afterburner, Rez and other games like that to be rails shooters, the reason being you're in continual motion and can't change the direction you're heading into. Like a shmup, in a way.
Everything's relative anyways, so whatever. I consider light gun games to be on-rails to, in an even stricter sense.

Technically in on-rails games you can't even move your character, such as in light gun games...but since those use guns they're generally called "light gun games" or what have you.

Generally on rails refers to moving forward or in some other path while only having some limited movement (Afterburner, Panzer Dragoon, etc)

Just beat the game today. Was very suprised to see how short it was and a bit disappointed on how easy the final boss was (seriously was a joke). The ending is kind of a downer as well. Anyway, I have 4 levels to unlock, so hopefully after unlocking those I will get a better ending. Who knows though. This is easily the easiest to beat of all Star Fox games. Still a good game though and I recommend it.

Just read that there are possibly different endings for different paths taken. I hope this is true. I was about ready to slit my wrists....

I played the hell out of the 64 version back in the day, and my best word for comparing this to it is "respectable." The graphics are a little closer to the 64 version than the original SNES StarFox, but the ship models are definitely simpler, and the backgrounds don't have a ton gonig on.

Overall, though, I'm happy with my $30 purchase. I'm not as sold on touch screen controls (wish there was at least an option to change back to old-school style), but it is certainly workable once you get used to it (bombing, in particular, is kind of weird).

And I actually kind of like the strategy parts. If you don't prioritize properly, you can actually lose a mission due to mismanagement, so that's a nice little wrinkle to add for complexity's sake, since the actual flight missions are all pretty small and self-contained.

Buying SFC at Fry's prices? Easy recommendation.
