I wonder if this is a sign of things to come. If more retailers will follow suit. Personally I play all of my videos on the PSP memory stick and have never seen the need to buy UMDs which sometimes cost more than their DVD counterparts.

Gamestop had buy one get one free on them last week.

Sony is also cutting back on production of UMD movies because they dont sell at all.

lol....I didn't think that UMD would last long.

Every time I go in Best Buy or Circuit City, the UMD movie section looks fully stocked. Like they never sell any. I wonder how bad the sales really are. It would be interesting to see some sales numbers.

I was the only person to buy any.
I have 10 movies, 1 I cant play because it requires you to upgrade to 2.0 which I refuse to do. If it happens again im not going to buy anymore umd's.

Well the way I see it...

1) Lots of good PSP games getting announced lately.

2) UMD movies dying.

= good news to me. Because I bought my PSP to play near-console quality games on a handheld, not to watch movies. So this will hopefully mean a shift toward the PSP being more focused on GAMES and less on being a "multimedia" system.

And if I want to watch a movie, I'll just rip the DVD myself. I don't need to get it AGAIN on UMD, which can only be played on PSP. It was a dumb format from the start!

Man I was collecting UMD videos and I also like playing games on my PSP too.

Well I guess that I will stick to collecting DVD's. Putting movies or anime don't look perfect when they are on the memory sticks because they look pixelated.:spock:

UMD was an unwelcome format from the outset.

The only reason it exists is because SONY got overconfident and hoped the PSP would sell well enough for them to make a killing by reaping UMD royalties from other companies that used the format.

As it is, the PSP got owned by the DS, and the PSP owners ignored UMD movies.

I am quite a big SONY fan, but UMD is and always was bullshit.

The PSP is basically dead, there's a reason why Square has continually delayed Crisis Core for the PSP, they probably were worried the handheld wouldn't last.

I read an article not too long ago that said 8 million UMD movies have been sold worldwide and 9 million games for the PSP. Probably could find it on digg.

The should've never charged as much as they did... I am convinced that it was the single factor they could've changed that would've made UMDs a hit on the market.

Instead the UMD movie format is an unqualified disaster for Sony.

Just like MiniDisc.

Tune in for the next exiting episode: BlueRay.

Yeah,Sony always end up shooting themselves in the foot.

They should definitely think about lowering the cost of UMDs.

That is the main reason I only ever bought 1 umd movie and even then I got it off of ebay for $10 bucks, I saw some more from a great seller who's selling a couple flicks I like for the low low price of $10 compared to the $20+ that Sony wants for them with less frills then thier dvd counterpart.

MiniDisc was and still is pretty big in Japan. I still see people that haven't shifted to solid state music using MiniDisc players.

I personally still use it too. Primarily because I bought MD technology because it was perfect for recording DJing sessions, and I still have a big collection of my mixes on MD. My car also has an MD player built in, so I still get a lot of use out of them.

Sure, MD didn't change the world, but it is pretty big in Japan.

i work at Best Buy....we don't sell them....they just sit and the section gradually grows....not that it matters as all studios excpet Sony either pulled the plug or are going to new release only..no back catalog

Dead? Are you sure? You would never be able to tell riding around the NYC subways. I see at least one or two a day, on people from all walks of life.

This is fantastic news. Ever since UMD was released I knew it was a joke. Just another one of Sony's failed attempts at market domination. Good riddance to another useless format. :kekeke:

When the Sega Nomad came out, I saw people with that thing when I would go to the mall, on vacation, etc. I wouldn't call the Nomad a success by any stretch of the imagination though.

Thats just being stupid. The psp is far from dead. While UMD movies/audio are a failure the system is not. It still is the 2nd highest selling system in japan on a weekly basis. The gap in the USA market between ds & psp is rather small, Psp is still doing well in the european market.

Japan also is getting a slew of great rpgs which should help boost the system some more.

Yeah, the Game Gear was the 2nd highest selling handheld for years...an that died. Sony sees the PSP as a gaming AND multimedia device (they didn't make movies for it for the hell of it), so when half of your products purpose is dying off, yep, that's a great sign.

Ok. There is a huge difference between handheld sales and all system sales. :|

Vs console sales the PSP sells more then the ps2 almost every week. In total this year handheld sales together have picked up slagging system sales. Psp is not dead.

Multimedia half of the psp is just an addition to the system. Truthfuly not all of it has been shown off since alot was designed in mind with the ps3 (which is late) & sony's online sales shop (sony connect).

Lets also not forget that the psp is more profitable for 3rd party studios then the DS ever will be but of course everybody else will just see it as favortism when a studio puts more out for the psp.

Well, good news for the rest of us. I'll just wait till UMD's go for $2-$4 a pop and then I'll pick up a few movies that would be nice to have on the go.
