The PSP d-pad dilema

Well I've been thinking about this for the past couple of days and it's been killing me. I've been on ebay and looked at the d-pad replacments you can buy to go over your original PSP pad. Then there's the option I've seen that you get an old NES cover, open your system and put it under the pad to raise it higher.

Now, here's my problem, I've heard many good things about the d-pad cover from Capcom and others, but I've also heard some folks say it doesn't work as well. Then there's my problem with the NES pad idea. It mights be raised up, but it's still a PSP d-pad.

So tell me my fellow members, should I get the d-pad, do the NES cover things, do both, or none?

BTW: If none, what's the best option?

Buy a d-pad cover.

Not only will the ghetto mod void your warranty, you're also breaking the vacuum seal, which will then allow dust to accumulate under the screen.

The PSP Capcom d-pad would be the best option like BIG said. ;)

I am going to play my PSP with Street Fighter Alpha 3 MAX even though I don't have the Capcom d-pad but I can still do the Dragon punch, fireball and the hurrican kick though. ;)

I'd say to get the d-pad cover. Just don't go taking it off and expect it to stick well again. You're going to probably have to buy a new case to fit the psp in with the d-pad because it's thicker, but that's a small price to pay.

Well, if you feel comfortable doing my mod then I would most definitely suggest my method. Its internal, its never gonna need to be replaced and your system looks stock. My mod makes the psp d-pad feel more like the ps2 d-pad by raising it higher and making it more responsive. I can't comment on the d-pad covers because i've never used one but alot of people have told me that my mod + the street fighter d-pad cover is fabulous. I've heard plenty of complaints of the d-pad covers coming off and not working that great to begin with.

Of coarse i'm gonna be a little biased but I just gotta comment after that "ghetto mod" comment. Also the psp is FAAAAAR from vaccum sealed. As long as you don't live in a desert and use some compressed air the system will look perfect.

I know quite a few people who have tried the ghetto mod,and no amount of compressed air can ever bring their systems back to the way they were.

Lint and dust city,I tells ya.

Well, you obviously know more than me when it comes to the psp and the guide I CREATED. Anyway, when a system leaves my hands its spotless.

Don't believe me?

Read: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=91940

I can understand my guide isn't for everyone but saying "no amount of compressed air can ever bring their systems back to the way they were" is just ridiculous.

That said .. you don't have to like my guide. Thats ok, many people do. I made it to help people.

The ghetto mod comment was not directed at you or your guide. I simply call it that because I've read quite a few topics about these types of mod in a number of PSP-related forums....and most of them did seem pretty fucking ghetto to me.

I'm dead serious about the dust/lint issue,however.

EDIT: UFighters' mod does seem pretty cool. His mod is not to be confused with the rest of the ghetto mods out there. Check out that link he posted.

I emailed with UFighterX a week ago or so, and the guy is pure class. I was thinking of sending my PSP in to him, but have since decided not to.

Why?

Because I've been playing Tekken and SFA3MAX this week and for some odd reason I can control both games fairly well with just the normal PSP. No dpad cover. No mod. SFA3MAX is still not perfect control, but it's decent. Tekken is near perfect.

And while I do trust the guy regarding dust, I still fear dust seeping in over time once the cover is removed. My PSP is too well preserved, can't risk messing it up. It would piss me off too much.

I was thinking of getting a second PSP eventually that would be my "Frankenstein unit" which I would mod. Dpad mod, fancy replacement cover etc. But that's still in the daydream stages.

I've never liked using original playstation controllers for fighting games. I don't know, maybe it's because there's a space between the up, down, left, and right side of the directional pad. I've always (if stuck with a pad instead of a stick) liked using a solid directional pad like the saturn, genesis, or super nintendo pad instead of a psx pad.

Of course a dream mod (for me at least) for the psp would be placing the neo-geo pocket color controller on it. I'd even love a mod involving the controller from the neo cd pad.

Quoted for truth.

I would give mad cash to anyone who could do this and make it not look ghetto as allfuck.

Yeah, the NGP/C thumb stick is the best handheld controller ever made.

It's a shame it's been ignored, it should've been copied to death. Maybe SNK has patents on it? But then GP32 copied it (not Gp2X, only the old GP32).

I also hate Sony dpads. It's just a terrible design, and on PSP they made it worse by having the dpad buttons set too low.

You know what I would dream of? Having a Sega Saturn d-pad on a PSP. I actually tried doing it with an old Saturn d-pad and some good velcro. To say the least, it didn't work too well and looked very ghetto. It looks like I'm off to ebay for a d-pad. Thanks for the help so far and keep the good advice coming.
