I like it. some of these battles take forever

but it's addicting

so I keep playing it

I did at least 2 one-hour battles so far

a bit more involving than Advance Wars, although I will say AWDS has a faster pace to it which can be equally satisfying.

I think what separates the two is the depth of the characters in FFT

mostly in the form of equipping weapons, setting up abilities, changing classes, etc.

any thoughts?

P.S. I can't stand AWDS's "hip" writing. It's pretty horrid actually. I'm not saying the soda pop writing of FFT is great, but comparably, it's better.

Have you played the original FFT? Thoughs and impressions between the two? FFTA caught my interest when it was first announced but I never picked up when I heard about the battle system (Something about "rules" and how's there like a referee dude or some shit).

the rules aren't a big deal

it's just another strategic element

I kind of like it

it makes you break out of a habit (for instance I could rely heavily on my sword fighting character, but if it's banned, I have to figure out a different way to win the battle)

I've never played the original

but I only like these kinds of games on the go

I could never get into it because of "The Judge" factor.

At first I thought it would be interesting to play a game I've played to death in a different light, but I found that the "Judging" just pissed me off more than anything.

Some people really dig it though... but I'm not one of them.

I'll stick to the original and be perfectly happy.

(Also think that when it comes to GBA Strategy-RPG's that Fire Emblem owns FFTA with the greatest of ease.)

The judge factor gave it a more challenging twist. I liked it and think FFTA is a must play GBA game. If you like the more original style though, go with Tactics Ogre: Knight of Lodis for gba.

I believe IGN actually scored FFTA a bit higher than the original FFT in their review, which I always found kind of startling.
But yeah...it's a great game, lots of depth and content. I bought a used copy and one of the saved files had over 130 hrs(!) logged in. When I saw that, I was pretty well convinced I'd bought a good game.

I'm more of a Advance Wars/Fire Emblem fan in general, but this game is good when I get sick of the incessant chatter in those other titles :D

I like the Judge system too, especially the way it's been worked into the story, makes it real interesting like. My only gripe with the game is, the AI seems to take a rather long time to determine their action, which needlessly drags out the battle.

If I see Fire Emblem for cheap I may scoop it up

otherwise, I'm going to hold out for the inevitable DS version

Allegedly Fire Emblem: Sacred Stones is going to be on sale at TRU tomorrow. Don't know how low it's gonna be marked down though.

FFTA is an excellent game, and really addictive. No real challenge in practically all of the battles, but it is just so enjoyable to play that it never bothered me. I sold it a while ago, but am seriously considering buying the recently released budget version for a second helping.

I have logged up more time on AWDS though. I can't really fault that, and I play the Japanese version so don't have the issues with the writing style that other US players have complained about.

you mean to tell me the Japanese don't say cool things like:

"you got served"

"off the hook"

"OWNED"

etc. etc.

Personally I like to think of FFTA as 'Final Fantasy Tactics for dummies.' Not that that's a bad thing, as I played the hell out of the game (I think the game counter was somewhere around 75 hours when I finished). Square also did a great job reinventing it for the GBA where you could just start up, play for a few minutes and stop, or play for 8 hours straight if you wanted.

It's all a matter of preference. I didn't like the Playstation version as much because it felt like too much micro-management, whereas the GBA version was more fun but with a little lacking in the management department.

I haven't been a fan of Square's efforts the last few years, but don't let that sway you from checking FFTA out. :)

You can tell I haven't broken the shrinkwrap on my copy yet :o still playing Pac 'n Roll and AC and Tetris and ah hell, I need to play Band Brothers.

If you can get either of the FE games(GBA ones) on the cheap, I highly reccomend them. The game engine works so well for portable gaming that I found it hard to re-adjust to FFTA afterwards.

FE auto-saves your game after every turn of every battle so even if you ran out of batteries on the bus you'd only lose the last few minutes or so of gametime.

Correct. We are spared that.

At which point do you get that stuff? During battles? If so, the JPN has far more amusing stuff. 'Goody', and, 'Ha ha' are two of my favourites. Particularly, 'Goody'.

Everything else is in Japanese, and pretty well done too.
