So I've had my MVS for a while now and I've read and heard a lot about the UniBios, but can someone give specific examples of why this chip is worth the price tag? Can you play as different characters in fighters/access more levels to any particular games? It would be cool to just have a thread naming all the pros of this nifty chip.

I have it on my boards and love it...I'm hopeful to love my ps2 mod the same:cool:

WHAT IS IT

The UNIVERSE BIOS is for owners of MVS or AES hardware that want an easy way to change country region or between Arcade or Console mode on boot. Also included are other features that are not possible using the standard MVS bios.

The UNIVERSE BIOS is also designed to give easy access to things like inserting coins, test mode and memory card management when using the joystick ports only. Of course the BIOS still allows standard operation too.

MAIN FEATURES

* The ability to quickly and easily change operation from MVS to AES. Play your favorite games as the home console version enabling all the extra gameplay options that come with some games.

* The ability to quickly and easily change country region (great for games that disable blood under USA region).

* Access to the DEBUG DIP's and DEVELOPER mode.

* Want unlimited lives or energy... Then cheat in games using the built in cheat engine which currently holds over 1454 cheats!!!

* If you are not happy with the cheats already there then you can patch directly into memory any place you like adding your own.

* Jukebox player where one can listen to game music without sound FX from gameplay over the top. Nice option if you want to create MP3's.

* A ROM CRC32 check where you can confirm a games program roms are good.

* True USA region support (correct coin display on bottom left and right of screen in the same way a true USA BIOS does.

* Arcade VS-MODE support which is known to be in the version 6 JAPAN bios. Turn this feature on via hard dip 2.

Other Features

* Remapping of coin switches to select buttons and visa versa. This allows a SNK joypad pad to do everything.

* Once region and operation mode is set the BIOS will remember settings until you change them again.

* Access to the standard Memory Card Utility no matter what Mode the BIOS is in (one could never access this menu with the normal MVS BIOS).

* Access to Test Mode on boot without the need of wiring the Test Mode JAMMA pins or fiddling with DIP's.

* Enhancements to the TEST MODE menu and hardware test screens.

* Console mode lockout protection removed from latest games when running on MVS hardware (bypasses the red warning screens).

* Arcade mode lockout protection removed from latest games when running on AES hardware (bypasses the red warning screens).

* Look at internal memory with the built in memory viewer. This is handy for tracking faults with slots that don't work (multislot hardware) or carts that simply won't start.

* The ability to soft reboot the system without the need of powering off and on.

**************************************************************

WHATS NEW IN VERSION 2.2
------------------------

Additions / Changes / Fixes

The splash screen will no longer show twice or more (on multislots) after the backup
memory is reset.
The memory card format option will no longer wipe the region stored in the memory card
on AES hardware.
The arcade protect setting can now have either the testmode button pressed or HardDIP 1

Changed the Cheat database storage slightly. It now takes less space in the Bios which
is good thing as space was beginning to become quite tight.
Fixed the AES hardware test code (A+B+D) so it also works after the splash screen is drawn.
Fixed the hardware error message from disapeering on AES hardware as soon as the hardware
test button code (A+B+D) was released.

Fixes (game related)

Fixed the AES version of 'King of Fighters 2003' from crashing after exiting the ingame
menu (bug introduced in 2.1).
Fixed 'Andro Dunos' to start attract mode correctly on AES hardware.
Fixed 'Andro Dunos' 1up not being able to continue on the last credit in a two player
game in console mode if started with 3 credits each.
Fixed Fight Fever to work correctly when freeplay is enabled (start was not responding).
Fixed garbage in 'Alpha Mission II' bonus rate SOFTDip setting on AES hardware.
Stopped SVC level select showing in a two player game when in arcade mode on AES hardware.

Cheats / CRC Database

Added cheat so that Irtating Maze is playable with 1up joystick (hold buttons B or C
for different speeds). This cheat has not yet been tested on real hardware.
Added cheat allowing boss characters to show in AES mode with 'Art of Fighting 3'.
Added cheat to enable blood in 'Samurai Shodown 5 Special'.
Added cheats to play as bosses in 'Voltage Fighter'.

Added cheats and crc info for 'King of Gladiators' hack.
Added crc info for 'The King of Fighters 2002 Magic Plus II'.
Added crc info for 'King of Fighters 10th Unique'.
Fixed the 'Sengoku 3' boss unlock cheat to add bosses into the mini character select
(happens after continue) if the cheat was enabled after a game had started.
Fixed incorrectly labeled 2up autofire cheat in 'Metal Slug 2'.

You do know that besides Raz's own webpage that there's always been a STICKIED THREAD in the Tech Forums about the latest version available, right?

It's a great investment. I got one for my MVS almost immediately and I've never regretted it for a second.

There's a lot of stuff that was in the JP versions of games that isn't in the U.S. versions. It's cool to be able to access that stuff.

Unlimited credits for those mad cheap final bosses. That's enough of a reason to buy one. ;)

Exactly. I think he was thinking of pounds not euros maybe.

Ya dude its only $30 and since its official you get free upgrades to newer versions but you have to cover return shipping which is like $5. So its a good investment.

On a side note you will get spolied from it. Since you only have to press start+select to bring up the menu, you will forget that it only works on your Neo.

Like I told Raz I was playing Killzone on my PS2 and getting killed and I kept trying to press start+select to bring up my cheats.

Doh, yea I was thinking of pounds.

I've seen Raz's sticky in the tech forums and I've read all that info on his site. I started this thread in hope of getting some specific uses for it. Most importantly I was hoping for some playable unlockables, like extra characters in fighters or playing as the bosses in last blade or anything like that. Maybe I should change the title to "Your Favorite Thing About the Unibios?" In fact, I'll do that now :buttrock:

Yes the Unibios does unlock bosses, hidden characters and the like.

And yes I can verify the bosses are playable in Last Blade.

Other things the UniBIOS regularly enables access to are adjustments to lifebars, power meters, timers, etc

They are only unlockable WITH the Unibios, its not like most games that have a certain place on the character select screen for boss characters. They appear behind everyones pictures.

It's not hard ... just remove the old one and plug in the new one. The 2-slot has a socketed bios.

My absolute favorite things about the Unibios are:

1. Proper home 2p vs modes in most fighters (on an MVS) so you can switch characters between rounds.
2. Easily pause games in MVS mode with start + select.

Those two things by themselves are enough to buy a Unibios.

My favorite feature is the region switch. I like playing certain games in japanese (Samurai Shodown mostly), and others in engrish. Also, the cart CRC check is very useful if you have a game you suspect is broken/ messed up.

Invincibility, without a doubt. If I want to go through a game without guff or if I want to practice moves in a fighter that doesn't have a Practice mode, it's there for me.

I have ver. 1.8 or something like that, so sometimes it fucks up on me. I know in some games when I've used some cheats the game crashes, especially in Pulstar -- putting on all the cheats just fucks the whole game up.
I dunno if Raz fixed it for later updates to it.

I don't think he fixed the Pulstar shit.

I asked him about it in the past and he said he couldn't.

Only disadvantage with the Unibios being the EPROM type used, my 1.0 I had for years just stopped working because the data basically rotted off it.

only took 2 or 3 years too - beware!

Rotted off or did you leave the window exposed >? Some boards have the original as an eprom and are still working after 15 years.
