I know this may seem like a strange thing to start a thread about, but there are a number of little graphical touches in neo games I think are cool. One of the main ones I see in a number of the earlier neo games is how some sprites are compressed or decompressed like in Sengoku. Another variant of that is when the entire stage is compressed during the high score screen in KoF 95. Plus I have also always thought the dramatic openings of some of the stages in various neo fighters are kinda cool. Like in FFS, the view starts on the ceiling of Krauser's stage and then scrolls down to the main fighting area. Anyone else ?

Seeing the screen turn white when you win a match in King of Fighters. I know it's simple... but back in the day I was like 'woah'.

Hmmm.. Scaling ?

There are some Mode7 fx on earlier games too.

Other than that, I guess there's only line scrolling and graphical art.

I was just thinking of anything in a game that when you see it, you stop for a second and think., "That was kinda cool !". Be it a graphic effect or just a way that something was presented. What earlier games had mode 7 in them ?

Man, I can think of all SORTS of them.

Some of them are just graphical art, like when you do a P-Special in Mark of the Wolves, where the screen goes all black, followed by a sort of golden lens flare, before doing the special move.

- The mode 7ish zooming impressed me when I first saw it in Samurai Shodown

- The line scrolling in Neo Turf Masters. I've yet to see an emulator pull this effect off correctly

- The squashing of the screen when scores were displayed in King of Fighters 95

- The "heat wave" effect on the burning ship stage in The Last Blade. Again, I haven't seen that trick emulated correctly yet

- its graphical art more than a hardware effect, but the blood red moving clouds during the first boss fight in Blazing Star. That first stage alone was enough for me to hunt down the home cart of that game...

Guys, "Mode 7" is a term used when setting the affine "BG 2" registers in certain tile mode during horizontal blanking. I could be a little off. But, this doesn't exist on the Neo Geo. I would guess that the hardware simply scales and or rotates. All those effects you listed Ramad are in fact hardware based. Can you imagine how many frames it would require to manually scale a background or sprite?

Hmmm.. I'm pretty positive that the Neo pulls out Mode7.

If not, it's very very well copy of it.

back in the days I guess it was only Neo, Snes and Mega CD that were pulling this cool Effect.

I am with you in that when I think of mode 7, I think of games like F-Zero and mario kart on the snes for how they do the tracks.

Played some Pulstar last night, that game is chock-full of graphical awesomeness.
The way some of the enemies rotate, the polygonal-looking ship at the start screen, how the water looks bumpy...still can't get past stage 5, but hot damn do I admire it.

The Snes has it.

Why SS1 doesn't zooming on it then ? ;)

If the Neo had Mode 7 scaling, it would have more racing games that aren't isometric.

Riding Hero doesn't use it which is why it sucks.

Mode 7 is also the SNES was the only choice 16-bit system if you liked racing games.

Mario Kart would be impossible to reproduce on the Neo, eg.

As for other effects, the line scaling mentioned above in Neo Turf Masters is awesome and like was also mentioned, have never seen it emulated correctly.

The split-screen look in Baseball Stars 2 when a hitter is running to a base.

The ability in some intros for an almost anime look. Simply impressive.

Most of these effects are pretty neat. What always impressed me were the wavy effects. They're really easy to do.

You don't need Mode 7 to make great racing games.

There is tons of good old ones.

I'm sure most of it was done via hardware. However, the lens flare during the special moves in Mark of the Wolves, and the moving clouds in the background, during the first boss in Blazing Star are just sprite and parallax plane animations.

Doesn't make them any less impressive.:D

Other instances of cool effects:

- part of the Last Blade 2 intro, where Setsuna's hand is coming down from in front of his face. It has this sweet sort of sepia colored old film look that's just awesome.

- the sprite scaling when you jump from the foreground to background plane in Fatal Fury

- The 3D-ish background in Level 2 of Blazing Star

- The morphing of the first boss in Pulstar

I love the background change effect in Samsho 3 when a character is low on health, it adds a ton of atmosphere to the game.

Also, the scaling effects when enemies charge at you from the background in Sengoku still looks awesome.

Yes the Neo Geo was mainly known early on graphically for its smooth sprite scaling effects.

This can be seen in Sengoku, Magician Lord and Nam75 among others, and later used to greater effect in Samurai Shodown.

apart from you didn't see those used in later games because it actually looked a bit pants KOF never used it, some games did, but you'll notice how ragged the sprites look nowadays

Side ring-outs in FF3/RBFF, neat how they animated everyone to have one.

You must be using some pretty crappy emus (Neoragex for example is trash).

Use MAME. And not some old version. It's 99.9% perfect with Neogeo emulation now.

Mode 7 is an effect that basically allows a 3D camera to move around a flat 2D plane. SNES is the only system that really used it (to my knowledge). MarioKart, F-Zero, and Final Fantasy III all had it.

The Neo Geo doesn't have any 3D capabilities that I know of, so it couldn't have Mode 7. The rotating effect in Neo Turf Masters is really cool though.
