There is no problem running the monitor chassis and CRT on a bench, be sure to have the aquadag connected to ground, thats the braided spring tensioned wire that goes around the rear surface of the tube. If its not you will get sparks.

The CRT will have to be discharged before disconnecting the anode cap after testing.

Really - if your not real sure, for the sake of safety install in the cab to test.
Its a long time dead.

I heard from an arcade op that the shock wont kill you but it'll give you a nasty shock.

OK...

If you want to test it out RIGHT and not get the crap shocked out of you (Yes it DOES hurt...) since one side of the AC line gets connected to the chassis, you need to buy and use an isolation transformer to power the monitor.

Something like this should be on everyone's workbench. They are easy to find on eBay.

You simply need to build a test jig if you are serious about gaming. A power supply, JAMMA harness, buttons, isolation transformer, and a test monitor are all you need. Funny thing is - you gather those things (sans monitor) and add a JROK or other video converter and you suddenly have a nice supergun setup.

Thats a very important point on safety with older straight mains rectification, the chassis will be at half mains.

More recent monitors run with a switched mode power supply so its not an issue.

Unless you are sure do not do it, or run with the isolation transformer as suggested.

Something I overlooked :oh_no: - thanks for pointing this out channelmaniac.

Well, I have a couple of extra BK Precision isolation transformers sitting here... I bought a set of 4 and only needed 2 for my new shop building. I'd be willing to sell off the other 2, but shipping may be a little pricy as they are heavy items.
