I never like the AOF series. I thought it was slow, stiff, and just poorly done.
I never played against more than two opponents in all 3 games.

Recently for whatever reason, I decided to play the games again via emulation. This time I played the games (1 & 2, still can't stand 3) all the way to the end. The games don't play like most Street-Fighter-clone fighting games (probably why I didn't like the series back in the day), you have to learn the mechanics to win in this game.

Once I figured out, and was able to adjust my fighting game habits to AOF's system I was hooked. I am now going to purchase AOF 1 & 2 for my Neo.

I also tried out the SFC port of AOF 2, and thought that was damn good for a SFC port. It made me wonder why Killer Instinct on the SNES couldn't have had bigger character sprites and scaling like AOF 2.

BTW, how is the PS2 port that recently came out? Is it a "Perfect-Port"? If it is, I might pick up the PS2 port.

Well...i seriously doubt that the ps2 version is a 'perfect port'...at all.
Besides....the AES version is as cheap as chips & would be cheaper than the ps2 incarnation anyway.

I own AOF3 on MVS and I love it. The graphics are so clean and the sprites so crisp. You are right in the different fighting style compared to other fighters but it's unique.

I'm yet to play the first two but will eventually purchase them some day.

AOF2 is an excellent game, hard but fun as hell.
AOF3 didn't do it for me but the animation is enough to make you play it.

Still need to get my hands on a copy of AOF for MVS.

I was the same way. I hated the AOF series until I sat down and took the time to learn them. Now I love the series and own all three.

AOF is definitely it's own fighter and there in lies it's beauty.

Gameplaywise, it's no SF and that's fine with me (Not a big on SF to begin with.).

I have always liked the AOF series next to KOF, SF i used to play alot and Mortal Kombat. But AOF is a change from playing the SF serie's and Its Beauty does lies in the Gameplay. :)

At a glance it looks like a terrible and i mean terribleeeee game. Then you understand its a whole different ball game. The taunts, the wall jumps, the pokes. Crazy.

I don't feel like trying to beat the game :envy:

AOF2

- While holding C:

press A for an anti-air punch

or

press B for a low kick

- use triangle jumps often (jump backward and press C at the right time)

- SDM is a winning key. knock down the opponent and pull an SDM whenever possible (likewise, avoid falling into such traps)

Slightly unrelated, but the funniest quote involving referencing a move is still Andy FFS's:
Prepare yourself for a real HISHO-KEN!

Welcome to the dark side...

Seriously tho...thats all AOF needs, some patience, willingness to learn and then bam, the games suddenly are fun as hell and great in vs battles.

It's the ultimate poke to win series. Just fundamental fighting without all the fancy comboing but did originate many aspects found in modern fighting games today.

I seriously believe that if the games are learned, the quality and fun become suddenly apparent.

The haters suck at this series thus hate the games.

And yeah the PS2 port are 99% arcade perfect, but with color edit mode and everyone unlocked already in VS. mode.

The triangle jump attacks are implemented best in AOF 1 imo, which is also my favorite of the series with 3 being the 2nd fav. AOF 2 does have the best cast and most personality tho.

And yes, you definately need to ''master the Haoh-Ken'' to stand a chance.

:spock:

it takes a while, but once you know how to play it, it becomes a hell of a lot easier.

Hope the port gets a PAL PS2 release. Samurai V has, along with Metal Slug 3 and KoF2000/2001 & 2002, so I don't see why it wouldn't.

While I understand the series is not for everyone, I'm glad to see it's still being played.
All three have their ups & downs.
Like Violent Ryo, the original AOF is my fave, followed by 3.
Seriously Genjuro, give 3 another chance.
You can beat the f#*k out of people when you learn the game.
Not to mention the work put into the graphics.

Here's a little something for you guys struggleing with Mr. Karate in AOF:
Put the game on "Hard" and the moment the match starts, try to throw a Haoh Ken.
He almost always will throw one in return.
One out of every two or three times, his will hit you first.
On Hard, it kills you instantly.

Respect.

There are a lot of hidden gems like that in the series.
I'm mostly familiar with the original AOF.
If anyone is interested, let me know.

AOF 1 & 2 = pure ass. Those games reak man. WTF is wrong with SNK making sprites that big, and clunky, and stupid looking. Sorry to say, I have zero respect for those 2 games and can see why Capcom took such cheap stabs at them.

AOF 3 on the other hand is pretty sweet. It was as if it was a public apology by SNK for making such crappy games earlier in the series.

:spock: Sorry I just don't agree with you. Sure it's not the lovely graphics of Garou, but graphics isn't everything. (I actually like the graphics because it shows the characters being beaten up as you go) AOF 1 introduced the spirit bar and the desparation moves. It's fun to play in vs mode. It's really a challenge to get through the game. I think it deserves much more praise than it is currently getting.

I agree, it is challenging, almost too challenging. Part of the reason I hate it is because its just too strange to figure out. Garou has a nice flow you pick up instantly, KOF the same, heck even SF Alpha or whatever. AOF is just plain weird.

I guess I'm just the opposite of you. It's not a button masher and that's the reason why I love it. I took the time to try to figure out how the game worked. Weird is correct, but that's no reason to hate it.

dubdubdub,
When I started playing AOF, there wasn't much else out there in the way of fighters.
SF2 was king, and Fatal Fury was out there, so I was already used to the multi-purpose "C" button.
We played what we had.
And if you play anything enough, you can get good at it.
A game does't have to kick-ass for you to love it.
There might be something special you like about it, or maybe it brings back fond memories of playing it with your friends in smoke filled bolwing alleys, whatever.
If you like it, cool.
If you don't like it, that's cool too.
But to say that they are "pure ass" might be a little much.
After all, if they had no merit, a lot of the features that originate with the series, like taunts, dashes, SDMs, would never have made it into games that you might consider "good" like KOF and Garou.

Not taking a stab at you, just trying to defend my namesake,

AOF

I really tried to get into AOF via emulation, and forced myself to play through all 3.

But Jesus Christ man, they're fucking impossible. Especially Young Geese in AOF 2. After that freakshow of a fight, I had no question in my mind on how Geese became the ruler of Southtown.

That said, Kyokugen karate is the most badass team of fighters ever assembled. Everytime I play KOF and select any kyokugen guy, everyone knows shit is going down, because Kyokugenryu are the shit.:buttrock:

I just got AOF3, and I'm curious: everyone is listing a move for Ryo that's QCB + A. I haven't seen it really do anything...am I doing something wrong?

Tried it on a downed opponent?

It's a pursuit only move.
