How awesome is the Gamegear?

I've been looking into getting one for a while, but I want a little feedback on it first such as the type of games (as I'm mainly an rpg-gamer), the durability of the system, region restrictions, system colors, rechargability, etc.

Please share your knowledge :glee:

I have wanted one for years, just never got around to getting one... I have heard bad things about battery life though, region should be the same as other handhelds, and as far as I know, it just came in Black.

Same hear about never getting around to it hehe. Hmm I hope the battery life isn't too bad though. That would be a shame.

I loved my GG, but sold it years ago.

There were some very good games for the system. But it EATS BATTERIES bigtime. So get some rechargeables if you want to carry it with you. Also, it's a bit bulky by today's standards - not something you stick in a small pocket.

The Sonic games are good, the Shinobis are brilliant, the Treasure games are awesome (Gunstar Heroes and Dynamite Headdy were really well done) and some of the RPG's are pretty cool.

But honestly, you can easily emulate the GG pretty well on almost anything from a GBA to a GP32. And have a better screen, a smaller system, and better battery life. Unless you're anti-emulation, it's a good alternative to the real thing.

But yeah, the GG was pretty cool.

love the game gear. not too fond of the screen but the games are fun. system came in two colors (that I know of) black and the blue 'sports' model.

it eats batteries for breakfast. get an ac adapter and car charger.

The coolest thing about it was the Master-Gear converter. This let you play master system games on the game gear. I remember when space harrier just came out for game gear, EB wanted $30 for it. I bought the master system version for $5. That was amazing to me at the time.

But yeah, the screen is horrible.

I still have my old one with a few of the games. Haven't played it in a long time but if you can get it cheap then it's really fun. Just don't expect too much portability. Rechargeable batteries ar useful but plugging into the wall is the best option.

I used to have it

it's somewhere in a box in my parent's basement

if that's not a good indication that the system was shit

then I don't know what is

emulate on a PSP or something

you're better off

The AC adaptor lets you play as long as you want. I still have my black Game Gear handheld with AC adaptor, carrying case, big screen lens and three games called Shinobi II, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Major's Pro Baseball. I had my Game Gear since 1993 and it was a get well present because I had major back surgery where I had 2 stainless steel rods grafted to my spine because it was curving and I lost the muscles to keep my spine straight.

Anyways the Game Gear is a very good handheld.;)

Game Gear's great. I had one way back, and still have one. My Game Gear currently has a Sega Master System adapter, and an R-Type cartridge in it. :D (A Game Gear's basically a portable Master System)

And, here I am, thinking that I'm gonna be a badass being the only one with a GG MS adapter... :kekeke:

I have a pretty big MS collection, so I think GG is great.

Back in the early 90's the Game Gear was my portable of choice. It has alot of crappy games with some good gems sprinkled in. My only gripes about the system is the bulkyness and the battery life. It makes a good collector's piece... but I wouldn't go on the road with it. A/C adapter is a must.

Don't forget the bulk. Seriously... if I were you I'd try to find myself a Turbo Express. The screen is a little smaller... the battery life is about the same but you get access to a BETTER library of games. If you want a retro portable go the Turbo express route.

So it sounds like the battery life and screen are the only drawbacks? :multi_co:

Game gear is a very good machine, especially for Ninja Gaiden what a game. But like People have said It munchies Batteries faster then cookie monster in a cookie factory:lol:.

But considering when it came out and the screen they were good back in the day. the system is a Give or take a few sprites, colors, resolution it is portable Mastersystem.

The A list titles
Gunstar heroes
Dyanimite Heddy
Ninja Gaiden
Shinobi
Wonder boy
Sonic 1

And with teh Master convertor
Ghouls n ghosts
and loads others

I only liked the sonic games. I still have my blue one with a couple games. I should get rid of it as I dont use it and havent used it in a while since I'm always playing my front lit NGPC. :smirk:

Bleedingrose...Despite the drawbacks, you can get a good deal on a gamegear system and a few games on ebay. I got a system bundled with 10 games on the site for $30. While it's not "portable" in a sense like the SP or PSP, it's worth the gamble, and I'm happy with mine. As others mentioned, be sure to get the AC adapter..very cheap as well.

this is a fact. My uncle used to have GG with the converter. Playing Rastan was so fun. Also that samurai game, I forgot what its called because I've never had a master system, but I know it starts with a K.

Sweetness!

Has anyone by any chance played the Lunar game for gamegear or Panzer Dragoon Mini?

Actually gamegear sucks, the screen is a horrid crap that blurrs with fast movements with the sonic games, The battery life is dreadful unless you have and adaptor to plug in the wall. There is one good game that I could think of and that of course is megaman.

Lol, seems like a wide range of opinions about it.

Just curious.. how is it (portable-wise) in comparison to the infamous Atari Lynx? Or is it relatively similar? I remember having MAJOR problems with battery life on that system as well. Loved it to death though.

Wow, I never knew there was a Panzer Dragoon game for GameGear! Thats so awsome! I'm going to have to find one of those and get a gamegear to play it.

Good luck in your search for cool Lunar stuff.

Oh, btw if you want to get the coolest GameGear ever, I do believe that it would be the Virtua Fighter GameGear that only came out in Japan. Its blue and has pictures of the Virtua Fighter characters from the anime on the front of it. I'm not sure if Gamegear games are region specific though.

The only downside to gamegear that I can see is that it can eat up 6 AA batteries in a matter of hours.

Oh and also, the Japanese Gamegear comercials are an excellent watch. There were some on the Sonic collection for Sega Saturn, but if you don't have that, I'm pretty sure you can find them on Youtube as well.

Game Gear was actually really advanced for it's time. That blur you mention is something most LCD screens of that time suffered from (especially color ones like in the Turbo Express, or Nomad), as they were new technology. Even now many LCD screens have obvious blur. :( Yeah, the battery life sucked, but it had some great games. (not to mention the entire master system library...)

Very true and yes Panzer Dragoon Mini exists lol but be careful Rocket. It's nearly as pricey as Panzer Dragoon Saga :make_fac: and EVEN HARDER to find.

Thank you for the good luck wish hehe looks like I'm going to need it.

I'll also have to look into that Virtual release and get hold of some previews.

Yea.. the 6 AA is around what the lynx took I believe lol but it seems like it has a nice range of games and some wonderful titles.

I'm also curious about the region restrictions on it though. If anyone has any info on that, it would be greatly appreciated :glee:

If you find a bargin on a good condition Lynx, get it. I still take mine to work off and on to pass time. New games were still being made by Songbird up till last year. Not cheesy homebrews either, some of the nicest games came from them years after the Lynx was history.
