I picked it up today and I'm on the third world so far. Pretty cool. Took a little while to get used to the controls (not that they're way different, just wasn't used to how this game handled at first), but seems to fit like a glove now. Great game so far. Good mix of both old and new elements in the game. I'm sure I've missed a bunch af secrets already, should have good replay value.

Haven't played multiplayer yet, I'm sure it's cool though.

This is one of the main reasons I bough my DS about a year and a half ago, both were worth the buy.

Hmmmm... Its good no doubt about it and addictive but its just OK good, not awsome in my mind. Its definatly NOT Super Mario Worl for the SNES which still ranks as the best Mario game in my book... Control is a bit wiered at first, more like the skidding feel of SMB 1 for the NES but once you get used to it its fine.

Problem I have is I am on World 8, the last level after playing it from Friday night to Sunday afternoon.... I know there will be hidden stuff but the hidden levels so far seem pointless and boring to be honest... The bosses are ridiculously easy requireing just 2 butt bounces to win and the new power-ups like the large Mario are also a bit Meh....

Graphics are great as expected with typical mario music too...

I dunno, if I was a reviewer I would give it 7/10... Good but slightly Meh!

Super Mario World for the SNES had an instant playable feel and look to it... the control of Mario on that title is 100% perfect in my mind and still looks good to this day... this new title looks prettier but just isnt as good... :oh_no:

I got it yesterday but only played like 15 mins of it so far. Seems cool. Its more of a throw back to the NES marios from what I saw. I think its kinda retarded that I already have 11 lives and im only on the fourth level though......

I read on IGN that the game is only like 4 or 5 hours long if you dont unlock stuff :(

I like it so far.

I'm on World 3, but always love to go back to the first world to look for hidden stuff.

Good game but not amasing or the best DS game out.

It's better then mario sunshine but still no where as great as Mario64, SMW2:Yoshi & SMW2.

It more comes off as a remix of mario bros 1 & 3 with characters from all over the mario universe.

A huge disapointment would be in the bosses & half way bosses (its the same damn thing over and over again).

--edit--
Fyi, I am on world 5 with both World 3 & 4 unlocked (you have to beat world 2 boss while mini to get to world 4).

The main game is pretty fun. But the multiplayer is an utter disappointment as of right now. Maybe its more fun with more than 2 players but my girl and I played together last night and the "star battles" just arent fun. Maybe im missing something here. And I have to agree that while fun and new this game just doesnt hold the magic that a NEW Super Mario title should bring with it. My personal opinion....good not great.

Sorry man, this game beats Mario 64 hands down. Mario 64 was alright, but this game works very well IMO.

I understand the point of MANY lives and such. Times change, and that was a cool way to make the original franchise looks fresh and an easy entry for this generation of gamers.

[not gotten that far myself, so I dunno if it's obvious or not]

It's really obvious, play it and you'll see. ;)

BTW, how do you save your progress? Does it only save when it asks you to save?

Mario 64 was the best game ever made.

This game is good, but its just not difficult enought.

Miyamoto didnt make this game though. Only checked up on its developement and it kinda shows. Glad I bought it though. Just waiting for my ds lites to arrive so I can play multiplayer with Jenn.

I have to disagree with the person who said this is better than Mario 64. I know it's all a matter of opinion, but I feel Mario 64 had much more going for it when it came out.

I have noticed it prompts you to save when you complete a new tower level, castle or open up a new area by spending star coins. If there are any other ways to save, please post them. It seems that as you get to the end, if most levels are done, it would become very hard to save if you were trying to finish getting all of the star coins you missed.

Mario 64 never did it for me. It's a bit overrated. It wasn't a terrible game, but mix the clunky camera, poor controls (thanks to the bad analog stick on the N64), and insane secrets (like having to hit some corner in a level once blasted out of the cannon for a star), and you get a decent 3D platformer. The DS version improves on the camera and plays better, but it still isn' as good as this Mario IMO.

Here's the thing I like about the new Mario. If a Goomba is in front of you, just jump on top of him, simple as that. In Mario 64, your best bet was to punch him because trying to jump on top of him sometimes meant over shooting him or not jumping far enough. Either way it left you vulnerable at times. The 2D Mario works much better and it's good to see him back in his original form.

But hey, to each their own.

I've spent about 4 hours with this, And I'd have to say SM3 > SMW > NSMB. Mario64 may be good, but 3d platformers bore me after about an hour.

OMFG I finally got to the cannon in World 1!!! I finished the world with 62 lives. :lolz:

Here's how to do it and what it does:

********************************
*************SPOILER************
********************************

To get to the cannon you need to must take a Koopa Suit into the small castle in World 1, either by wearing it or having it in your inventory (Inventory is best because it's pretty damn hard trying to navigate the castle while you're sliding around). Remember the door you went in to get one of the three coins? (It's right about the sewer pipe that launches you into the air.) Go into this room and in the upper right hand corner you'll see a opening that's just big enough for you to fit through, go through to the next room and run to the right, you'll see three bricks along the ground that you cannot break without the Koopa Suit, so break them and alse the next three stacked up righ next to them by using the Koopa Suit slide. Now go through the sewer pipe, this will take you to an alternate red flagpole. After beating the stage the cannon will open up. This will take you to World 5.

Got that figured out. Go to the world 1 tower (the very first castle, not the big end world castle). Now, I'll preface this by saying you'll need to be, or have equiped, the blue turtle shell power up. Go up the long tower until you almost get to the top. You'll notice the warp pipe cannon that shoots you upwards through a row of coins. As you decend from your fall you'll see a small ledge with a door on the right. Enter the door with the d-pad on it. As you enter this small room, go to your right. DO NOT go into the d-pad door. Instead, step through the gap at the right side of the star coin room to enter a hidden area. Only shell Mario can smash all the blocks with the dash and crouch move and reach a pipe. This exit leads to a warp cannon that will blast you to world 5.

Well, there you have it. Have fun and good luck.

I'm loving this game. My gf is farther than I am right now. I will say that not much beats Mario 64 for me... this is nice. Very nice, but M64 forever. Which is also on this system. DS is becoming one of my favorite "console" systems ever.

You can actually save anywhere!!

But you gotta beat the game first. So just go through it without unlocking any secrets, and the 2nd time around you'll be able to save anytime. :)

Ocarina's better IMHO.

But Tezuka Takashi has been in charge of all Mario platformers for some time now, like Aonuma being in charge of Zelda stuff. I'm sure that Twilight Princess and Super Mario Galaxy got more of Miyamoto's time, but this is really business as usual for Nintendo.
