Ive been playing a lot of old brawlers lately, and I'm trying to figure out if a sequal to river city ransom exist? I know Renegade was the prequal to River city and after river city was the double dragons but does another brawler exist somewhere inbetween and no those ice hocky and crash n the boys games aren't qualified as brawlers. Is there a river city ransome pt. 2 Anybody know?

Actually, Double Dragon came out first. It practically started the beat-em-up genre.

No, I'm sure Renegade came out first.

Yeah, but you said RCR came out before Double Dragon.

Well, that may be correct but there has to be a sequal to River city, i'm guessing it only came out in japan under kunio ken . . . .

There was a game called Technos Samurai that was very, very similar to RCR. It's not a direct sequel, but it's very similar. The characters look almost exactly the same.

Downtown Special: Kunio-kun no Jidaigekki Da Yo Zeenin Shuugou

is the name of that game.

Wrong forum :smirk:

Search for "Kunio-kun" instead of "Kunio ken" to find more information.

Other beatemups include Kunio-tachi no Banka and Shodai Nekketsu Kouha Kunio-kun for the Super Famicom.

Also, check out Nekketsu Kakutou Densetsu on the famicom.

one more question, are these kunio-kun games playable if you don't speak japanese?

The only game I'd shy away from would be Shodai Nekketsu Kouha Kunio-kun as far as language goes. Everything else is enjoyable with or without japanese literacy.

If you're into emulators, these games have english patches (including Shodai). Don't ask me how they work, though. I don't know a thing about them other than they exist.

Shodai nekketsu kouha kunio kun is considered RCR2, it's on the SFC.
Many consider Kunio-tachi no banka (SFC) as just an update.

Shodai rules.

it starts out very boring, but gets incredible later on.

It doesn't play like other beat'em ups, nor like any of the previous Kunio games. It's kind of a cross between RPG's and beat'em up. you get EXP by beating down people (foes or stand by's). The higher your level, the more moves you get, like a jump kick, grab moves, ...etc.

The story has some twists too, and the environments look unique and neat and add a lot to the game's atmosphere.

there isn't a complete translation patch yet, but there is currently one that covers most of the game and the font used is kinda horrible. A complete and better transaltion is being made.

I have the game. Thanks for mentioning it. There are probably lots of fanboys in the US who would wet their pants if they knew this game existed. It's just like River City Ransom, except it's like a play set in feudal Japan, and the way you progress the game on the map is a little more repetitive.

As much as I love SD3 (only arcade I own :buttrock: ), I've got to say no and just sideline it with the rest of the Nekketsu sports games.

I didn't get why Technos never made Kunio appear in the sports games (besides Crash 'n the Street Boys? never played that one, so don't know), always putting in generic Nekketsu students.

Nintendo World Cup and Super Dodge Ball are some of the funnest sports games evar...wanna play Neo Dodge Ball, one day.

Yes, I love "World Flicker&Slowdown Soccer." Actually, I think that Dodge Ball on the Famicom and Super Famicom were not very fun.

wha ..... the basket ball game is one of my favourite kunio sport games!!!!

wish I had friends to play it with. The kunio sports games in general are extremely fun with multi-players.

"Kunio" was the featured character in all of the Nekketsu games (even the sports ones). His name was changed in the US releases, though. I'm guessing you only know RCR from RCR EX for the GBA... that was the only US release where he was actually referred to as "Kunio". For the NES he was named "Alex".

Also, if you like WCS there was a sequal made for the famicom called "Nekketsu Soccer League". It blows WCS away. Also, there was a very good port of World Cup Soccer for the MegaDrive which implemented a charge system where you could do different offensive/defensive maneuvers depending on how long you held the charge button.

Nah, I've got the original RCR, I just can never remember the translated names.

What I mean about the sports games is that nearly all of the characters look alike, so I can't tell if it's some Nekketsu kid or Kunio himself. In Super Dodge Ball, I do know that none of the guys look like Kunio -- you've either got your small guy that dies quicker or a big 'ole fat boy who takes more shots, nobody lookin' like my favorite high school thug.
