Ok I am new here and got the bug to buy a Neo Geo which I did, I got a Japan AES with Debug Mods, S-Video, and Stereo, the games I got were SS 1 and 2, Art of Fighting 2 and Fatal Fury Special. TO kill time before I get my system i played my Neo Geo MVS at the school arcade, I played SS2 and looked at teh graphics and couldn't wait to get them at home.

Yesterday I get teh thing, great condition, everything works, I hook up the S-Video and these graphics are not nearly as good as the MVS system. I even try the old school Mono adapter and still these graphics are blury and grainy. The S-Video is clearer but there is A LOT of bleeding and still no where near the quality or the Resolution of tHe MVS. It looked like a Genesis game, sound was teh same but not that great to begin with.

What gives? II have teh JIM Kurtz mods, is this the best I can get? Is it the TV? It is brand new, how do I get better graphics cuz right now I feel as If I paid over $200 for a Genesis.

Not a flame post, just not happy with the system.

Is there a way to make this system run better graphics? I thought that they would be atleast comparable to the MVS but it is like they ported the Neo Geo game to a Genesis, what gives?

MVS outputs as RGB to the monitor which means it's a much clearer signal then composite and even SVideo.

Both systems are essentially the same hardware (with a few minor differences).

As for the quality of the SVideo output, I can't really say anything relating to the AES. I can just tell you my RGB out from my MVS setup is excellent, and the NeoGeoCD system has excellent SVIDEO out. wink

with all due respect - get samurai shodown for the genesis then play your homecart, no way on earth does it look like a 200usd genesis

maybe a wee trip to the opticians would help

the arcade monitor resolution is normally top line - but whats inside a mvs cart is whats exactly inside an aes cart

maybe a new tv might be on the cards

Brand new S-video, over $1000 TV, I said it looks like a Genesis game, I am sure the Genesis has worse graphics but from what I am seeing it can't be much worse.

My Vision is better then perect at 20-16 in each eay, some times I can read 20-14 but not consistently

there is now way its comparable to a genesis game

all the games look fine on my matchline phillips 32 inch and sometimes 100hz digital scan can be a pain in the arse :D

Well, first of all, i think S-Video is sort of overrated. S-video is good and sharp, but not as good as everyone puts it out to be; like you said, there is still a lot of bleed.

If you want to get optimum video quality, you'll need some form of RGB, whether it's straight up RGB, or whether it's VGA through and X-RGB2, though that requires either a true JPN SCART RGB cable or some system-side work. THere are details at GameSX.

Not all models of AES can display the same picture quality with the Svideo mod.

You should ask Jeff Kurtz about that, he might help you.

And MVS Cabs usually have better image output than the AES Svideo mod. MVS cabs have RGB signal. They Kick ass.

Or you still can try finding a TV with an Euro-Scart plug and get an RGB cable to reach the MVS picture quality. smirk

It is possible to get perfect video from the AES if you have the time and money. You can PM me for more details.

I use the RF cable to my tv and to me it looks the same as the mvs quality. I never understand how someone can say it looks better. There a neo geo arcade here at my school and I play it a lot, I see no difference...

I'm pretty sure just the other night you were discussing the merits of buying a Candy.

You really believe that your Genisis looks better than your AES. Come on. Buster_broon has the right idea. Rent Samurai Showdown for you genisis and compare. The graphics and gameplay will be MUCH better on your AES. Come on. Some of the stuff on these boards is fucking CLASSIC.

Maybe you're just spoiled by the high-tech dazzle and slick graphics of todays next-gen mainstream systems.

If you only owned a genesis/snes/tg16 and a neo, then you'd probably see the difference like most of us here.

Of all the systems of the 16-bit era, I find the Neo Geo AES blows all of them out of the water in terms of graphics. It amazed me back then, and still does now, just thinking about it.

That's another thing; look at the time the AES was created, then look at all the other home consoles released at that time. No contest, it was the most powerful game system out there, seeing as its the actual arcade boards.

If you still think its an "over rated genesis", you're being ignorant of the facts.

Don't forget the AES still has new games being released for it nowadays...

For me, I personally don't care how crap a game looks. I buy games to play, not to display and show off. Its never been like that for me.

Give me substance/fun gameplay over style any day.

Just my two cents.

I do have to agree. Though there's something irresistable about manuals and neato box art drool_2

Shame your US tv sets aren't the same as ours here in Europe.

But honestly I think it's your neo, I mean SVID isn't quite as great as RGB, but it's not that much worse either. And ehh, I would sell your AES if you're this much disappointed. I mean the first weeks I got mine, I was in heaven, even if it'd be twice as ugly as the gen I would had to be careful not to walk under a car, daydreaming :)
There's more then graphix and sharpness. If you don't understand, the NEO might just be the wrong console for you.

Like Atrophyed and others pointed out, we European Neo users are lucky (if only in this respect): PAL Neos can work at 60hz with a SCART RGB cable in all our TV's, thus allowing for a far greater video quality.

Your topic makes me relieved when I think I was on the verge of buying one of Arcade! modded systems. It might have been a horrible surprise. If you are really disappointed about your AES system, I think you should buy a PAL (European) TV and a JAP AES (which also work with SCART RGB I believe). You can sell yours, get some pretty good money back, and then invest it in this new setup. I seriously think it's worth the money.
