Most underrated Neo game in terms of GRAPHICS?

I feel that there are a few Neo games (And I'm talking about NEO MVS/HC/Neo CD games, NOT ports; i.e.: DC games) that are underrated in terms of graphics.

IMO, the first and foremost among these is King Of Fighters 99.

I'd also say Breakers, Pulstar and to a much lesser extent AOF 3 (Only cause people say MOTW is animated better).

But few people mention KOF99 when they talk about beautiful graphics.

So what does everyone else think?

(And nobody better say Mark of the Wolves! :) )

Kizuna Encounter and KOF 99

Both have A-class backgrounds, Sprites and Animation.

Kizuna has an graphic style similar to the Real Bout games thou wheras Real Bout is bright and cartoony Kizuna is rough and more Gritty looking.

KOF 99 is the most animated of the series, just look at Terry.

Samurai Showdown 3, but it's only underrated because of all the h8ers. :D

Seriously, though, I love the art in that game. Match the art in that, with the gameplay of 4, and I'd be in heaven.

AOF isn't underated people piss their pants about it all the time. I'd have to say Blazing star is pretty damn underated graphically.

I think the in game graphics in KOF2001 are under rated, every one slags this game off but I think the in game graphics are better drawn than 98.The character art pre-fight is shit no arguments there ............

it could well be Ninja Masters.

People like NSX-T will call it shit, but I think that it displays some fo the tightest sprites in the SNK universe.

Just take a look at Raiga and Sasuke - their mesh tops have to be one of the coolest things in the game. It comes out better than Hanzo and Galford's sleeves in SSII if you ask me.

Everything about Nobunaga is cool - the way he pulls out his sword - the animations inside his cape, the fire that rises from the ground. The guy just smacks of evil.

And of course you can't forget Karasu, who has the greatest visual eye candy ever with his solo sword super combo. It may not be "graphically" ground breaking, but as a visual, it is, and that's what matters.

...

In Kizuna, when Rosa starts up her desperation, she wiggles her wrist a bit right before dashing. I love that attention to detail. The other characters just get right into their move, but she winds up first. I love it.

I always loved FFS for the details and the changing backs. Everytime I see Terry's, Mai's, Tung's or Krauser's stage, it's like visiting an old friend.

Ninja Master's is definitely a beautiful game in every aspect. The intro is also my fave Neo game intro ever, just bad ass. And the music... man, the options menu loop alone is godly, let alone the in-game tracks.

I also feel that Karnov's Revenge a.k.a. Fighter's History Dynamite is underrated. Okay, generally, the drawing style isn't that sophisticated, but again, there are lots of funny things to see in the backs, it's a nice example of good'n'zany old-school Neo graphics.

Oh, there are to many. I just can´t keep count of the graphically underrated neo-games.

Let´s go for the overrated instead.

Garou MOTW - Great animation but the sprites are small and not very detailed compared to some other games. The design on bars, meters, text and menus in the game are really awful (check options menu). I prefer hand-drawn effects instead of rendered.

Pulstar - Everything is almost rendered and some things looks way out of place. Last resort is almost better looking overall imho.

Fatal Fury 3.

That game is a visual tour-de-force that blew me away when it was first released, and still impresses the hell out of me to this day.

Awesome graphics and animation with great attention to detail (multiple block animations for each character!), and some of the BEST backgrounds in the entire Neo library: Joe's swamp, Pao Pao Cafe 2, Mai's aquarium, Geese Tower, and the Jin brother's various park backgrounds are still some of my favorites to this day.

While some may not like the engine, or the way the game plays, I really can't see how anyone could really find fault with the visual aspects of the game. In my mind, it's still one of the best looking games on the Neo today.

Gotta go with KoF '99. The best-looking game of the series. I know a lot of people bash it because it was the first year of strikers, first game after '98 but it definitely had the looks. IMO it also had the best music of the series but that's a discussion for another thread. :)

2nd place would have to be Blazing Star. I just got this game a couple months ago and the background visuals, effects are just amazing through an S-Video output. glee

3rd place? Overtop (um ok maybe not...) loco

I like Blues Journey.
It's a very colorful game,seldom talked about.
I think it's underrated

It's a fun platformer game.
This game isn't that easy either.
I have been playing this game for the last few day and I like it.
It's a nice game to play after a fighting game.

My friend just was here and we played Metal Slug 3,Last Blade and Blues Journey.
We had a great time playing these games today.

Blues Journey is a very different type of game to play after a Last Blade fight session.

I have to say Art of Fighting 2, mainly because people rave about the graphics in 3. In AoF2, the characters are so fucking beautiful and well animated. I love how it's so colorful as well. Look at the backrounds too, especially Robert's stage. I think it's quite possibly one of the best backrounds of any video game. The bikers hanging outside of Mac's bar to the tourist hot spot in Lee's stage, this is SNK at it's finest (in terms of backrounds). Even the people in the backround have facial expressions, unlike some KOF bgs where people in the bg have blocks for heads and no eyes.

I also have to give a shout-out to Fatal Fury Special. I hear a lot of people say stuff along the lines of "the game looks soooooo dated". I personally can't see it. The characters are colorful, well-animated, and the backrounds are incredible as well. I love fighting in South Korea as the snow falls with the water fountain flowing forth. Tung also has a fucking incredible backround as well. Geese's intro/stage gives me goose bumps, and don't even get me started on Krauser's stage.. Dated? I have to disagree.. strongly.

Agree on both counts, though i have to add Jubei Yamada's stage to FFS (kicking each other through the paintings is too cool for words) and Mickey's AOF2 background (80's action movie coolness :) )

I totally agree with this. The sprites are big and well-animated, and the backgrounds are great. Yuri's stage has a lot of stuff going on in it and I love it. Temjin's stage isn't half bad, either. I think it's cool that it really FEELS like so many people are forgetting about their jobs at the loading dock and rushing to see the fight, that they just dropped everything and ran to see the excitement. I also like Mickey's stage, too, how everyone's just cheering him on and watching him kick butt (not to mention the pre-fight music sounds like the beginning of that theme from Rocky). Robert's stage is ACE. That fancy sportscar, the fountain, mansion, everything conveys this is a rich prettyboy who lives a fast life. IMO, any game that convey that much atmosphere in something as little as a background is a great game.

Well, I don't know about overrated, but it's not underrated in terms of graphics at all. It is recognized.

Money Puzzle Exchanger (or, as the guys in my neighborhood call it- Cash Money Change-O). Just watch the opening; you'll be surprised that such a game with an incredibly low meg count can pull that off. Magical Drop 3 is another one that shines graphically; just look at the in-game character animations.

I think it's overrated. Granted, these are good graphics, but the content really isn't that great. Sure the animation moves smoothly, but the characters aren't just bad but.. really bad. The stages aren't all that inspiring either, especially by SNK standards (except for maybe Wyler's stage and inside the mansion) Like you said in another post about best fighter, I think graphics should be like that.. balance, which not only contains fluid animation and color detail, but good character artwork and the ability to make the game come alive. I think games like Last Blade fall into this category.
