I'm about to get a PSP, and I just had a few questions before I took the plunge:

What exactly is "firmware", and what are all these different versions of it?

Are UMDs region free, like I could play JP UMDs?

And is Popolocrois any good?:kekeke:

Firmware is the software that runs the hardware which occasionally gets updated to fix glitches, security, or just add some extra functions. I think the newest firmware is like 2.5 or 2.6.

Umd movies are region coded. A region 1 system only plays region 1 UMDs.

What about the games?

Awesome.

What 's this I hear about the the new firmware not being able to play roms?

Do I have to get the latest firmware to play certain games, and if so how do you get it?

Yes newer firmware can't play roms.

Some game require you to update your firmware to play newer games. However, the firmware required to play it will be included on the UMD. So you could just update it that way.

You can download the new firmware by setting your psp up with your wireless network and the games that need new firmware come with the update too.

Yeah I heard roms stopped being playable after 2.0 firmware but I heard there is a way to play them if you have grand theft auto for the psp.

Thanks for all your help so far. One last question:

Is there anything I should know about the memory sticks? What's the best one?

They're all really the same. If you find one super cheap there is really no difference from the expensive ones. If you want to put music and movies on one though I suggest a 1GB memory card.

...and the SanDisk brand memory cards are the best kind so far.

i use psp ver. 1.5 firmware

1.5 firmware is the best so far, you can play all homebrewn games, and emulators, lacks support of new interenet features

as for memory card, i use the datel 4gig/2x battery combo, because te psp tends to lose battery fairly quickly

be weary, if you buy a psp with version higher than 2.0 you CAN NOT downgrade the firmware

if you get lower than 2.0 you need to find the psp firmware 2.0, then upgrade to 2.0, then you need to get the mph 2.0 downgrader, and it will make your psp 1.5 and be able to play psp homebrewn
