Question regarding AES AC Adapter

Hi guys!

This is my first post into this wonderful forum.

I wanted a Neo Geo ever since I saw an ad in a magazine a little over 15 years ago, and I finally was able to purchase one last week.

What I noticed, however, is that my AC adapter tends to get VERY hot. I'm actually afraid it'll blow up; I left it in overnight and this morning when I went to unplug it it was incredibly hot. My AES was turned off (the power isn't even plugged in it right now) and it still gets hot.

Is this a common issue with AC adapters?

For the record, I have a Japanese AES, serial #161694. The AC adapter has the following information on a sticker on the top:
SNK
MODEL NEO-POW3
91-45083 T-TAMURA-S
INPUT: AC100V 50-60Hz 19VA
OUTPUT: DC 10V 1000mA

Then some japanese characters.

I might be able to get my hands on a generic AC adapter that could output this specific current with the correct polarity, but I'm wondering if it is known to overheat (or simply get very hot) or if I should get a new AC adapter.

Thanks!

You should just unplug it from the wall socket when you're not using it. And you should do the same with any other power supply that is fully enclosed and unvented. Why leave them on? It only shortens their life.

Reading the specs in your post, a Sega Genesis 1 adapter would work just fine in your case. Not Genesis 2 though, as those adapters have a different plug and won't fit. As MKL said, unplug the adapter if you are not using your system. There is no reason to keep it plugged if you are not using it anyway, is there?

Just for my curiosity. Japanese wall outlets give and subsequently their electrical equipment runs off of 100V, but North America's outlets give 110-120V. Is this something that can cause excessive heat? It feels like it's not very unlikely after all, especially with 120V... I have used Japanese 100V equipment (Neo CDZ for instance) with a 110V stepdown converter (my country is 220V) for hours on end without heat problems in the past.

I remember playing Fatal Fury in a game center long ago. A few days later I went to a store and found a big box. Flipped it over to look at the back and understood that it was the same game as in the game center. From that day on, life became a matter of saving money....

Thanks for the replies guys.

I'll probably leave it unplugged for the time being. I also have a Genesis 1 AC adapter (I always keep my old consoles!) so I'll check if it has the same specs and polarity.

Besides, it's going off to get modded this week anyway.. :)
