MS5 graphic glitches (AES) - cannot play :(

Just bought a Metal Slug 5 AES (Jp) and tried to play it but there are very bad graphical glitches which render the game totally unplayable:

- SNK logo/jingle play correctly
- MS5 title screen: no sound, no image (just a press start to play)
- game starts: only the sprites (characters) are displayed = no background, no vehicle, sound seems to be fine.

Any idea where this could come from? I tested KOF 2000 and SVC and both worked fine as far as I can tell.

First off I would suggest giving the cart and cart connectors a real good clean.

Thanks Raz.

I actually found a way to play it (after talking to the person who sold it to me) - I insert the cart and then pull it up for a half centimeter... it does play correctly when inserted this way - some sound glithces at the beginning of each level (for 1 sec) but that's it, the game is totally playable.

Not sure what could cause this but apparently the previous owner had the same problem.

Oh that cart is clean! I cleaned good because like I told howdoin I couldn't get it to work on my AES. However, after I did what Howdoin said It worked everytime.

I bought that cart in Japan and watched them play it and test it for a good 15 mins before I bought it. I didn't want to take the chance of buying it for the price I did, bring it home to the US and it not work.

When I put it in my AES, I was shocked that it didn't work. I tried it in my friends AES recently and it worked fine. So after some experimenting i tried this and it worked perfectly. I just assumed it was my AES because I have to kinda do this with all my snap-lock cases now. Maybe it was how some of the systems were produced?

With the sound glitch though, is this normal? I know a lot of people complained about the sound.

Thanks for the info and Howdoin i sent you a PM. Get back to me

It's not the first time I hear about this. What are we talking here? Is this a sign of the cart slot wearing out? Is cleaning the cart slot going to make a difference? (It can never hurt though..) Good you got your game working!

Probably just depends on what revision AES the cart is in.

I had the same audio problems with an MS5 AES cart I bought from the Neo-Store a while ago. Everytime the heavy guitars started up, it would be garbled for a few seconds--How to Play screen, stage transitions, etc..

Was actually about to send it back to Shawn when I decided to try it one last time, worked fine. Guess just inserting/removing the cart a bunch of times fixed it :P

Also, aside from being ditry.. I've found that on some AES carts there are loose threads coming off the bottom edge of the PCB (below the contacts). Sometimes if they're long enough they get infront of the contacts when you insert the cart and cause problems similar to it being dirty.
