Was there something wrong with your other thread?

No need to add another when you could have simply asked in your first thread.

Ohh and that PSU you linked to at Jameco wouldn't do you any good since it can't provide enough current on the +5 volt line. 1 amp on the +5 is beyond underpowered... I would be surprised if most pcb's would even power up.

The MV-1B requires +5v and +12v. It draws very little current, around 1A on +5v.

As for the desktop PSUs yup, the ones with higher specs are incredibly expensive, no matter where you buy them from. Farnell, RS and even the site linked above have triple output PSUs (+5/+12/-5) with 5 or 6 amps on +5v but they're still about 100 dollars (or little less than that). Leave them alone, for a serious supergun use an arcade PSU.

Only problem with the arcade PSU is the size. Just too big for compact enclosures. I trim down the frame as much as I can without sacrificing safety to save on some space.

Do you think the Sigma AV6000/7000 are too big?

I did a lot of research on desktop PSUs (when I thought it was a good idea to use them for superguns, which I don't think anymore) and the manufacturer that makes the most powerful ones is Sinpro. They make a triple output model that does:

+5v 10A
+12V 3A
-5v 1A

http://www.sinpro.com.tw/products/MPU/mpu100/mpu100-xxx-p1.htm

Why do you not think desktop PSUs are good to use ? Just curious as I am needing to find a new power supply for my gun also. Thanks.

You need an older desktop PSU that doesn't have the 3.3v output or a PSU that has it's own built-in load resistor on the 3.3v line... Switching supplies tend to self destruct if their outputs aren't loaded down.

Most have a load resistor on the -5v and -12v or use voltage regulator ICs that don't need loading... but the +12v, +5v, and +3.3v lines need some kind of load on them...

The 12 volts only supplies the audio output stage (HA 13001 in the case of MVS)
so current draw would be approx 1 amp max.

Regarding the -5 volts, 95% of jamma boards do not require this.
Early 90s Midway boards like MK series and NBA Jam use it as do some of the Toaplan boards like Out Zone amounst others.

The -5 volts supplies the op amps in the audio stages of these boards, current would be relatively low, perhaps a few hundred mA.

None of the Neo Geo MVS boards require -5V and the MV-1B doesn't even require much power on +5V.

And yes I think the Sigma 6000 is a bit large. Quite tall and blocky.

I read on your page that the supergun with arcade PSU (the only one that can be considered for a comparison) you sell measures 10" x 8" x 3" while Sigmas are 7.75" x 4.5" x 3.8" so they're definitely smaller than yours. They occupy a surface area of 35 sq. inches while yours takes up more than twice as that (80 sq. inches). Who cares if Sigmas are just a tad taller? The annoying thing is when superguns take up a big surface area.

I personally think the Sigma is ugly as sin.

So if I make a 3"x4"x 20" supergun that would be better? Seriously, I don't think the footprint is a big deal when the harness is flexible like I use. I keep them relatively small but not so small that I need to cram everything in.

Ugly as sin? That's on a par with saying Japanese cabs are horrible and wooden cabs are gorgeous. Of course tastes are tastes and if you think that OK, it's your opinion but most will disagree (and you don't make superguns for your own use, do you?). Note that I was talking about the use of enclosures similar to that of the Sigma (i.e. a single self-contained unit with an arcade PSU inside) not specifically about the Sigma which has several features I don't like: the stupid F1 car picture, the connectors on the top, etc.

I don't understand that F1 car picture either. Strange choice really.

I understand your point though about size. I haven't had anyone complain about the size of these superguns though.

And I do think candy cabs are ugly too. Seriously I don't get the attraction to them other than in that case the smaller footprint of them. But personally I prefer a cab I can stand in front of and play.
