Will a cap kit bring back my monitor's picture?

I got a 1 slot defender cabinet over the weekend for a great deal. I don't think the monitor has been changed from the original defender cab, it says it was manufactured in 1982. It is a WG Model# 19K4906. I'm thinking the caps could be shot on this as the person that sold it to me said its probably been a while since the caps have been changed out. Notice in the picture how the right side is brighter than the left side. The colors are pretty good on it, but most likely could use a good degaussing. I also adjusted all of the knobs on the pcb to get the best possible picture in the current condition.

So my question is, how do I get the best possible picture out of this monitor? Also is it save to assume that Model 19K4906 is the same series as the Wells Gardner K4900 Series Monitor?

Thanks for any help,
Bill

Yeah model 19K4906 is a 4900 series. The 19 at the begining is the size the K4906 is the model.

K4900=19K4901, 19K4906, 19K4951, 19K4956

Hi Bill,

There are 2 things to do when a picture gets that shitty... 1) recap it... 2) rejuvenate the crt...

Recap it first and see if that resolves the problems. If not... then it's time to rejuvenate it.

How do I go about rejuvenating the CRT? Do I need to take it to a repair shop or is that something I can do myself?

Try the video output dc filter cap, It will be the 10 uF /200-250 volt cap on the 180 volt rail. That drying out can give symptoms such as yours.

To rejuvenate you will need to get your local TV repair tech to do the job.
It requires special equipment. This is the Promex rejuvenator I use.

Rejuvenating is a last ditch effort to resurrect the CRT. It does not always work, depending on how low the emmission is.

Put the cap kit in... if it doesn't take care of it then you can always contact a local TV repair shop... Mine here will do 'em for $30 if you carry 'em in.

Not too bad a deal at all, but like ttooddyy said... it doesn't fix 'em all. It really depends on the shape the tube is in.

This is slightly off topic maybe but since a cab monitor basically is a TV, wouldn't it be possible to do fit some kind of cap kit in a regular TV-set too once it gets old and the colors get washed out etc. I am a complete noob when it comes to TVs and it's just an idea that popped in my mind. Which caps are the caps that one changes with a cap kit by the way? Anyone?

You could... but TVs are throwaway items any more...

You are basically replacing most of the electrolytic capacitors in the monitor. There are a few capacitors here & there on different monitor boards that don't get replaced as part of a "cap kit"

A TV is the same, as they get old the electrolytic capacitors dry out.
The idea is to do a blanket change. But in some cases the ofending caps in a certain area are replaced.

Electros often cause probs around the vertical output stage, typically causing vertical distortion like foldover / linearity problems or lack of height.

If in doubt change the lot, there are usually about 20 electro caps on a monitor or TV pcb. Its not that difficult with basic soldering skills.

Read all about it here.

Thanks for the info. That site was really good! Well yeah, TV's really are throwaways nowadays, but there is nothing like tampering with some electronics on a lazy rainy sunday afternoon when you get tired of playing games.. :)

ttooddddyy - Thanks for the great info, I was hoping you would see this thread. I'm going to order a cap kit from either Bob Robberts or from Happ Controls today. I'll post some after pics so viewers can see the difference once its been fixed.

I'm having the same exact issue with the same exact monitor. I'd like to see the after pics for sure.
