Last night, some friends and I hooked up a projector from my job I had for repairs to a pc for mame. The projector was a 4000 lumen, high def DLP from EIKI with a native resolution of 1080p. We used an entire wall of a room to project an image about 10 feet long (even larger at times). We also ran all the sound through high end, high power jbl monitors.
Honesly, I have played on just about every cab and own plenty of my own...but I dont think I have ever been hit as hard as I was last night by any image. I cant even explain how clear medium and high rez games looked. When bright screens where projected the whole room would fill with light, and when the screen went dark, pitch black. It really was an unbelievable experience. I am not a fan of Mame but I have to say in this instance it was really really cool. Really makes me want a cyberlead even more with a vga out.
Tonight we are possibly going to do a full 5.1 setup and watch T2 in a high def WMV that is on the "extreme dvd verison" its a file on the second disk. I cant wait to see how the image looks...

That makes no fucking sense. Why would the arcade ops do that? it's not like it cost them MORE to run it like that. One of the employees or even the owner probably had that projector, so its not like they had to buy a $1500 projector and have the customers pay for it.

I hated when arcade ops would get the latest/greatest fighter and charge $1 for the first month and then 'lower' the price to $.75 even though you could tell the cab was a fucking kit and not a dedicated machine.

If they just learned to - if nothing else - make the first play $.50 and $.25 to continue, more people would play it. I know I would see a game at $.50 and think "shit, but at least its a good game and continues are only $.25, so I can keep playing it". More people would pump in quarters if they just stuck to that price range. But if I saw that a game was a fucking dollar to play and $.50 or $.75 to continue, I played my one game and got the fuck out of there and went to an arcade that cost less.

Shit like this and the fact that dance dance revolution was ever invented killed arcades.

even though it cost a $1...it was worth it.. cause there was alot of a compitition(..line up of 7-10 people) ...and if you have the skillz..your $1 last..a long time:chimp:

i don't screw around( and can't afford to..cause it's $1 if i loose)...so i just use Ken(:glee: ) on 3S:chimp:

Yes I know the high pricing sucks but take a look at what a new kit costs these days. After a couple of months, the novelty wears off and people stop playing the game. If the arcade or operator hasn't made his money back in this time, he will be stuck with a board worth only a few hundred dollars in a few months.

As for using a projector, I think this is a neat idea but I doubt it was making enough money to cover the cost of a new lamp. The replacement lamps/bulbs run something like $500 alone and are only good for so many hours. I doubt it could withstand being used all the time in an arcade environment. This cost on top of the cost of the kit would have to mean the game would have to make double of what it normally does. Bottom line is that it does cost more to use a projector. The return on investment just isn't like it use to be with arcades.
