Interesting, maybe we'll see a glut of this stuff in ebay/yahoo auctions to International consumers.

As a side note, there was an article in a recent Game Informer that said Sony was developing technology for a future game system (they stated it probably was not going to be the PS3) that would allow new, purchased games to only be played on the first system they were played on. This would not allow consumers to buy preowned games anymore or even rent games.

I can dig the article up to substantiate this, but did anyone see this?

I saw the patent application on that technology. I think as of now, it will just be that --- a patent on the technology. I really doubt Sony will incorporate it into the PS3 or even the PS3's successor. Along with what you mentioned (renting and buying used games), doing so would greatly prevent other vital aspects of gaming such as bringing a game to a friend's house and replacing a game that was damaged. It would just harm Sony too much.

Sony's already confirmed that they're NOT going to lock games to specific PS3 consoles. I could look up the article but it's been a few weeks since I saw it.

I saw they mentioned this was not going to be integrated in the PS3 too. They may have the patent and technology and may wish never to do this, but I don't think they give a rats ass about preowned games and probably rentals as probably they don't make any direct money after the initial purchase and I'm sure when it comes down to it, it's all about maximizing profits and not the desires of the consumers.

I'm sure many of the third party publishers would welcome people only buying new games and not preowned ones. The more they sell new the lower the total % of overall costs of producing and creating would be for them.

I'm sure retailers will find some sort of way around reselling items. Maybe you can pick out the used electronics you want, get an assortment of little trinkets and redeem them around the corner for the used electronics in exchange for cash.

Then the Government will have no problem with it :tickled:

I'm pretty sure this would have to be bullshit. Every old school game shop in Japan would have to fold up.

I don't know anything about Japanese politics, but I would assume that companies like Sony, Matsushita, Toshiba, etc., would have much greater pull with the government than old school game shops. Their impact on the economy is almost surely much greater.

How can anybody support that IDOICY is beyond me.
They want to make competition illegal?
This article is a perfect example of how technology over the last 10 years has hit a wall! How pathetic....

This is not really surprising, considering the moves Japan has made against the second hand market. If they pull that shit over here, though.. expect shit to fly.

I cant find any additional information to back this sites claim. Though I'd expect most articles to be in Japanese.

I really do hope this is a joke...

Think about this story for a second. Use your ability to rationally thing beyond blind acceptence of a sketchy website on the interent. Thing about the implications of such a law. Think about all the industries, outside of the myopic world of "gam0rz" that would have issues with this.

Not only that, but the article is written by someone who seems confused about what he's talking about. First cars, then computers, no sources? Please... dismiss this "story" as just a story, not a believable article.

I know the weird little buggers have an exponential tax as your car gets older - thus making owning an older car cost prohibitive, but I couldn't see this happening with electronics.

It does say April 1st as the day this goes active, so it's probably a joke or something.

They did have a ban on selling used games like years ago, but that got repealed, obviously.

It's retarded...

The Used game industry does shtiloads to support the new games industry...

Kids trading in 4 quality PSII titles so they can buy Madden 2007.

It's just like the Car Manufactures over here banned thier dealers from selling used shit.

On an unrelated point, there's a bit of a to-do over used American cars going south of the border to be sold. The used car market is a mammoth glut right now with new cars being so cheap, not surprising with GM's health and their cars are dirt cheap to begin with.

Here where I live, you can buy a fully loaded chevy malibu for 10K brand new.

Now, I don't want that car, but it is very cheap for a brand new car that isn't an econobox like the cavalier/cobalt.

Many of the used dealers are sweating because they think their product is going to be sold in Mexico, since 'used' is like an '05 model with 5K on the odo.

The way I read the Asahi article there is nothing to worry about as, first, it does not concern used video games but mainly electrical aplliances like fridges, heaters etc. and second, it does not even ban them necessarily but just requires a new security check.

So if you're living in Japan and are looking for a five year old fridge, rest assured, you will be able to buy one even after April 1st.

Akihabaranews was obviously misinformed.

Thing about proofreading your posts...:kekeke:

Sorry, I couldn’t resist. Seriously though, I’m neither an economist nor a historian, but hasn’t Japan been steadily veering towards a quasi-Socialist command economy since the financial boom and bust of the late 1980s? Couldn’t this be seen as just another manifestation of this trend? I’m not saying that makes this a legitimate piece of news, but considering we're talking about a society that still censors genitalia, it honestly wouldn’t surprise me...

The impact of used game sales has been a topic that has appeared on many gamer magazine editorials lately. I think in about 5 years, the brick and mortar stores will be phased out and we will be downloading all of our games. Xbox Live arcade seems to be taking off, with Nintendo Revolution right behind.

Agreed... if any game company was crazy enough to use such technology, they would be shooting themselves in the foot. It would be nice to have everyone on the latest & greatest hardware and own their own copy of software. But patrons hate being pushed onto technology when they are not ready. Besides, how would a friend take a game over to someone's house so they can check it out and maybe even purchase it themselves? It would be very foolish if someone I knew had to disconnect his PS3, just so I could reconnect my PS3 to his TV so we can play the game.
