What about that last statement about sony making an adapter to play UMD's on a TV. Who would honestly buy that?

I can't wait to read the Sony spin doctors responses to this :p

I haven't watched more than 10 minutes of the Spiderman 2 UMD nor have I watched more than 30 minutes of Bullitt which I ripped to the stick.

Turns out I'd rather play games than watch a movie I guess.

People started actually buying games, or they realized how stupid they were for buying UMD's.

Take your pick. :emb:

Theres no comparison there m8,a mindisk can carry the same amount of music as an ordinary cd with virtually any loss of quality.

The picture quality of a UMD film on a full size screen will be like watching some piss poor net download or of some HK VCD - if you are lucky.most films are around 4gb,umd's are 1.5.

If you are in the US and used to watching stuff on an NTSC set via s-vhs it won't matter anyway as the picture quality has never been that great so I guess a UMD adaptor will be released in NTSC regions and will probably do ok.

But minidiscs were not a failure. They were a massive success here in Japan for many many years. It's just by the time they really came to the USA it was too little too late. And tons of companies made mini disc players in Japan, not just sony. There was Sharp and Panasonic just to name a couple. UMD is an outright failure not like MDs.

it's a stupid idea anyway.

at first, it might have that 'coolness' factor, but when you think about it, people can just rip dvds they borrowed off blockbuster and put it in the mem stick and picture quality is on par, if not better.

MD primary use was for recording you own stuff ina compact form, not for pre-recorded stuff like UMD movies are.

They should just low them to 10$/€ or less if they want to move their present stock, otherwise it'll never sale. Still I doubt I'd buy any.

exactly.
it should be at least 5 dollars to 10 dollars cheaper.
i cant believe someone would be so dumb as to buy media that
was so proprietory, movies especially.
20 dollars on a movie you can only watch on the psp?
come on.
if they came up with a tv adapter it may be semi worth it, but not really
since i'd figure anyone with half a brain would get the real dvd.
it's an attractive gimmick. but still a gimmick, and an expensive one at that.

Some how I knew sony was reporting shipped quotes. Just like they did with the psp.

The beginning of the end is coming... no movies.. certainly no games. And no psp.

Go figure. (im exagerating here a bit.. wait.. no im not!) :kekeke:

I actually considered buying a PSP because of the video playing capability. Why? Well, I travel alot for work and I just thought it would be cool. Then I realized that the technology just isn't there with the PSP, too short battery life, and massive memory sticks cost way too much. I got a 60GB Video iPod and never looked back. Instead of buying proprietary mini discs, I use my DVDs and rip/encode them to MPEG4 for my iPod. It is just great. Work would really suck without it. I actually have almost 50 GB of video on there, haven't put a single mp3 on it yet... Of course if the PSP would get one other game worth playing besides Lumines, I might consider getting one for dare I say it -games.

What really killed UMD movies is the price.

If they had come out at $10 or $15 I might have jumped on it, but why would anyone want to spend $20 (or even $30 in some cases!) on a crappier version of a DVD movie that I can only watch on the PSP?

Not even American consumers are that dumb.

Yeah, totally obvious, the announcement of UMD video just made me :spock: ... especially if you consider how quickly the DVD prices drop nowadays because it has become so widely adopted, why would you pay more for poorer resolution that plays video on a smaller screen on a machine that could cost 5 times the price of a regular DVD player?

I think this booby idea was hatched from Sony's market dominance. Dominance breeds arrogance.

At least the games are doing ok........right?? :conf:

The games are doing ok. Just the bigger titles though, the releases are few and far between aswell. Nintendo is going to trump them in a month then the release the ds lite, tetris ds, the new mario bros. And a few other ORIGINAL TITLES.

PSP is getting owned.

I think all in all there lack of originality is hurting them the most. That and the ps2 has the same games. Sony is not a intricate company. They need to break it up or start a few new developement companies that are specifically honed to making games for the psp. Wont happen though.

Sony will be fine. Hell they are fine right now. I wish they would be a little more strict on what they let developers actually release, but developers have always made handheld versions of games. It's just weird because they actually come close to the console versions.

LOL UMD. I'm with the same camp of people that said they only watched a few minutes of the Spiderman 2 UMD.

Small screen + the fact I never liked that Spiderman movie.
