Hi,

I've just opened my Neo Geo AES system after several years in the cupboard and cant find the power lead.

Can I use a different type - what type do I need?
I have a JAP system and live in the UK

Thanks

Floob.

There are 2 types of psu for the geo,one is a 9v and the other is 5v.If you have a megadrive 1 psu knocking around then try that and if it starts up then you're rocking.

If you just get a black screen then you need the 5v psu.You won't blow it up by putting the wrong psu in the wrong machine, when I had two AES' at the same time I kept getting them mixed up and they were fine.

Hopefully you will have the 9v system as the psu's are quite easy to get hold of and they work with pce, sfc,us snes and probably a dozen more machines. If it is the 5v model psu that you need they are relatively hard to source out at a reasonable price and if you do get hold of a 110v 5v psu and want to use it with a stepdown converter just be warned that they don't seem to last very long.I've also found that the 5v versions don't like to use the phantom-1 converters its as though there isnt enough juice going thru.

Don't try using one of those cheap multi-adaptors,they are only about 300amps,I think the geo needs around 800-1000amps to run nicely.

If you look in the FAQ it should have a mention about what psu goes for which model geo.Check what yours is by looking on the sticker on the underside of your machine neo-geo1,2 or 3.

I cant see reference to the PSU in the FAQ :(

My sticker says
NEO-GEO
MODEL No. NEO-AEC
RATING 8w
Use PRO-POW AC ADAPTOR ONLY
SERIAL No 90A .......
SNK CORPORATION MADE IN JAPAN

hmmmm...

Cant seem to tune this in even though I think the AC adaptor I found should be ok.

I've set the RF adaptor thing to 'I' or should it be 'G' ?

I've also put earphones in the socket - so even if it isnt tuned I should hear the music? - which I dont even with a cart plugged in.

Does this point to the AC adaptor being no good?

The official power supply for your system is 5v/3A. The PSUs you linked do 4.5v which is not enough and 6v which is too much and could damage the system. Also, they're not powerful enough: make sure you get one rated at least 2.5A (2500mA). And the polarity of the plug is also important: it must be negative tip.

BTW, throw away that RF adapter and get yourself an RGB scart cable.

Hi,

Well I got the Scart Cable (I didnt know AES ouput in RGB - will it work ina non RGB scart connector?)

Hope I havent damaged my AES trying different voltage - but does anyone have a URL to a power supply I can buy?

Hmmm, is there an wasy way to see if I have killed it?

You'd need the £44.99 one in the first link (meh, couldn't they provide something more powerful than 2.5A for that price? :oh_no: )

The stepdown in the second link would only be needed if you had a Japanese or American PSU (i.e. with a 100-120v AC input), so ignore it.

I could get you the right PSU (twice as powerful as that one) for £25 shipped to UK but it could be a few days before I find the time to go and buy it.

Well I think I have a JAP AES as the serial starts 90A - and I may well have already blown the PSU trying the wrong power supply.

So - I may need a repair anyway, and then buy a stepdown as well. Could well be cheaper buying a new AES!

You don't need a stepdown, even if your system was Japanese (which is not, NEO-AEC indicates a non-Japanese system, Japanese would be NEO-0. And 90A is not the serial number which wouldn't matter anyway). What you need is a power supply that outputs 5v and you can get one that can be plugged directly into your UK mains socket. It's that simple. You can't tell if your system works or not until you use the proper power supply.

Isn't the 8 Watt PSU the 12volt one?

Seems like the 5 volt one would be 15 watts.

There's no 8W PSU. The 8W thing refers to the power consumption of the system itself. And all systems have it written on their bottom label, early ones as well as later ones, no matter what PSU they're meant to work with. It's just generic info about the system that shouldn't be given too much importance.

Thanks very much for all your help.
