Anybody got the damn near legendary arcade version of this classic? Obviously, the NES version is the most common game ever, but I was just thinking about how awesome it would be to play it on a cab without any emulation bullshit or what-have-you.

I've never seen one for sale, though, so I guess it's expensive. Thoughts?

SMB uses the playchoice 10 hardware, and if you had the mobo the game shouldn't be all that expensive. Ebay always has alot of playchoice 10 stuff.

Be forewarned, if you get a playchoice mobo, it is not jamma, and it can only be played an a Sanyo or Sharp Nintendo monitor, unless you do some serious modification. The playchoice, and other old nintendo arcade games (DK, Popeye, etc), actually send inverted RGB signals, and as if that wasnt weird enough, the audio amplifier is with the monitor. So making a jamma adapter would be a pretty big project. Youd have to get an RGB inverter, seperate audio amplifier, etc. Not impossible, but not as easy as most JAMMA adaptations. I'd say just hold out and buy a dedicated Playchoice cab when you get the chance. Thats what I'm waiting for :)

You can buy both a nintendo/jamma adapter and a video adapter. Both should run under $100 together. I think Mikesarcade.com has both of them. Ebay too.

Just out of curiosity (and please excuse the potential ignorance of the question), but what difference, if any, is there between the Playchoice system and the vs. system for arcade versions of Nintendo titles?

I think that the version of SMB that HeartlessNinny wants is the Arcade version, and not the Playchoice 10 or VS. version.

That's what I was thinking.

It's a pretty cool game, though I'm not a big fan of it. It's not that expensive of a game. I would say you could find one in the dedicated widebody cab for around 300.

I wouldn't mind having a Playchoice 10 setup. It has some games that the VS system didn't have, such as Mike Tyson's Punch-Out. Not sure of the exact differences between the Playchoice and VS systems, but I know Playchoice can run up to 10 games and I believe VS only runs one at a time.

Yep, I own the arcade version and I don't consider it rare or expensive at all. The reason why you probably don't see too many of them is basically because of the reason you mentioned. The NES version is pretty damn close and it's very common.

Another reason why you don't see too many of them, is because they get converted to something else. I know everytime one goes up for sale, people buy them so they can convert them back to Donkey Kong or Donkey Kong Jr. As others have mentioned, it uses a different monitor so people can use the monitor for another Nintendo game. Overall the game is worth more as a parts donor machine than a complete machine since a lot of the parts are interchangeable with other Nintendo games.
