I don't know what the hell my roomates did to the pc but it won't reconise music cds or the burner. I have tried both drives and no luck. The cds sound like they are are booting up but I never get the screen that asks what to do with the cd. If I go in real player or itunes I can't play the cd's. If I try to burn my mp3's to cd I get a no burner detected message. If I go to the my computer screen the cd never appears where it usually does and you can click on it. Any help at all woukd be greatly appreciated. I have been messing around with this for hours and need to take a break.

One time I had a problem like this, it turns out the IDE controller's driver was messed up. See if you can reinstall that.

Check and see if he installed DVD43 (DVD4Free). I noticed that my drive wouldn't recognize any of my games when I inserted them in the drive. If it has been installed, just right click on the icon in the tray and close the program.

What's IDE?

How would I go about checking a bios?

I don't think the dvd software has been installed from what I can see. I do see DVD copy now, has been installed. However we have a cd for that, that was purchased at a store. And it seems it doesn't run automatically.

If it has been installed, it will look like a smiley face in the system tray next to the clock.

I am a client server engineer for a credit card bank and was a sr. desktop support tech for the same bank for 7 years.. here is a little list of troubleshooting steps that I would try.... Thought I would post this windy document since others have been nice enough to help me with my issues......

when the computer boots up ( after you turn on the power) depending on what kind of computer / motherboard that you have, you will get a memory check or a manufacturer splash screen. Hit F2 or Del ( varies between pc motherboards) and this will take you to the BIOS. Check in the BIOS to see if the CDROM drives show up, set the IDE channels to AUTO ( if it will let you) and save the BIOS and reboot the machine.. If this was OK and you didnt have to change anything, check your cabled to the drives and also the jumpers on the backs of the drive.. make sure one is set to slave, the other set to Master, or CS ( cable select). If this is correct then go into the device manager in windows, and delete the drives and then reboot the machine.. Windows will try to redetect the drives and install the drivers again.. ( hence the term Plug and Play)... If this doesnt work check the IDE cables to make sure there is no cuts/ nicks and check to make sure the power plug is fully connected to the drive.. If that doesnt work, it might be a controller problem on the mainboard, you could flash the BIOS with the flash utility and the update from the computer manufacturer, but sometimes that is risky and should only be done as a last resort... You might also have to replace the motherboard.. www.newegg.com has great prices, fast shipping that is where i get most of my computer stuff....

hope this helps.. if i am wrong, someone feel free to correct me..

I tried going into device manager and unistalling the 2 drives. After rebooting nothing was resolved. I do notice that the 2 drives have yellow exclamations next to them though. I can't get the esc or F2 button to go to a bios screen. I don't know what the deal is.

Anybody that witnesses these problems should try this. There are multiple software packages out there that will corrupt your computer's registry when uninstalled. To correct the problem follow the instructions below. NOTE: After uninstalling Roxio Easy CD Creator in Microsoft Windows XP or 2000, Device Manager may have one of the following error codes listed for CD drives on the system: The device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device (Code 31). A driver for this device was not required, and has been disabled (Code 32 or Code 31). Your registry might be corrupted. (Code 19) A Code 39 error advising that the driver is corrupted. CD access may be effected in My Computer and CD writing software as well. Additional Information -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Remove the UpperFilters and LowerFilters Values with Registry Editor NOTICE: The following procedure contains information about editing the Windows registry. Dell does not guarantee success or support these actions. Any use of the information provided herein, is performed at your own risk. Click the Start button of your desktop, and then click Run. In the Open box type the following text: Regedit.exe. Click the OK button. Click the plus sign (+) next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. NOTE: When you click the plus sign (+) next to a folder, it will expand displaying the folders it contains in the left-pane of the Registry Editor. When a folder is highlighted, its contents will be displayed in the right-pane of the Registry Editor. Click the plus sign (+) next to SYSTEM. Click the plus sign (+) next to CurrentControlSet. Click the plus sign (+) next to Control. Click the plus sign (+) next to Class. Click {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}. On the right hand side of the window, click UpperFilters. Click Edit on the menu bar. Click Delete, and then click OK. On the right hand side of the window, click LowerFilters. Click Edit on the menu bar. Click Delete, and then click the OK button. Click Registry, and then click Exit. Restart the computer normally. NOTE: Once you have completed these steps, check for other CurrentControlSet folders in the registry that may be titled CurrentControlSet001, CurrentControlSet002, CurrentControlSet003, and so on. If these folders exist, you need to follow this procedure for each CurrentControlSet folder to clear the upper and lower filters.

What is the brand name and model of your computer? If it's a custom, what is the model number of the motherboard?

My pc appears to be a custom job my roomate bought from a pc store brand new. I am not sure abut the mother board but the serial on the pc is one of these I think.

x08 3061
0000435081
00043-505-810-853

there is also a product key number. Not sure if that is it. I can give you that if needed. It's a 25 digit alpha numerical number.

Do I need to take the top off the pc to get the motherboard unit number?

The computer says powerspec on the front of the unit. I have office xp home edition.

Alright. Hmm... it's a custom, so there's not some freaky branded BIOS in it...
Do you see something like this when the PC is booting?
BIOSP42800.gif

edit: here's a slightly... er, tiny image, although it probably resembles what you see more closely because AMI (American Megatrends) has become more prominent than Award.

FIXED!

Thanks for the help everyone. I figured it out. Turns out the "dvd copy now" software I bought from micro center was the problem. I decided to uninstall it since someone mentioned a similar problem earlier. Everything seems to be normal now.

Oh, I love computers! Everything works fine until your neighbor turns on her hair dryer. If this coincides with your neighbor across the street using her vacuum cleaner, the tab key and space bar on your computer just might stop working and you just don't know why. I hate computers more than anything on earth, but one can unfortunately not live without them. Long live the neo!! Plug and play instead of plug and pray. I'm happy you sorted stuff out though! :)

Weird, it worked and now it's doing it again. Do you think it could be a virus?
