Title says it all. I'm thinking about possibly picking one up and I'd like to hear some thoughts/opinions on the system.

The reason I'm thinking about getting one is the Sakura Taisen 1 and 2 game coming out in Japan. Am I a dork? Yes. Do I care? No.

What other games are worth it? Imports or domestic.

I have 0 interest in UMD movies of any kind.

The only games that are really worth the $50 price tag are Lumines and Wipeout Pure. The only upcoming game that will probably be as good is Goku Makaimura. Aside from those, it's just ports and rehashes, I'm assuming Sakura Taisen is one such game.

Unless you're in a situation where you'll really take advantage of the video playback (and I'm not talking UMD's either) or if you don't have an iPod/mp3 player and really want one, I wouldn't recommend it.

There are some potentially great games coming down the line but, aside from those three I mentioned, nothing that really pushes the PSP into the "must buy" realm.

This is all IMO, of course.

I got mine as a gift.

yes, but get it used. its not worth the 250 you're gonna pay for it.

i have the psp twice. first on launch day, i got it just because of all the hype surrounding it.

ridge racer & lumines imo is the best game for it.

after that i rarely play the system for game, mainly for movies.

some interesting games are coming out for it, naruto, worms, and the killzone thingy

I am also thinking of getting a PSP but I have read so many mixed opinions about the system on these forums that I am still undecided.

Although I wouldn't mind playing Ridge Racer & WipeOut Pure. :)

Huh, how 'bout that, I'm the first "yes" vote. I can't argue that there's a ton of killer software (because there isn't), but there are several must-haves (Lumines, Wipeout Pure (hermegildo is a man of cultured tastes), Ridge Racers, Burnout Legends); and then there's the primary reason I'd say buy it- the outlook for the rest of this year is very promising. Mega Man/Irregular Hunter looks nice, Exit looks fantastic (ask BIG for impressions if you want), and Me and My Katamari looks great, too (among many others).

The quality of the software is picking up nicely, I think, even if it's still a distant second to DS in terms of overall volume of quality titles.

Oh, one more thing- the harddrive might release this year, and Sony may also unlock the CPU speed (allow devs to program for 333 instead of 222). That should allow for some really impressive improvements in software.

There are some pretty solid titles, Ridge Racer is amazing, and Lumines is alot of fun and addicting. I mostly use mine for the MP3 playback, becuase I don't own an Ipod or mp3 player. The UMD movies are meh..I only have one and it gets old fast. But the fact that you can rip your own movies, games onto the memory stick is what makes the PSP bloom. There are so many things you can do with it that it's worth the money IMO.

Sakura Taisen would be a port of the 2 games from the DC remakes, if I'm not mistaken. And it's not like I can't just play the DC ports (or the Saturn versions).

Perhaps I'll just buy the game, and wait a bit longer to buy the system? Maybe wait for a price drop, or find a used system "cheap?"

Add to the games out that are worth it: Hot Shot's Golf. And for upcoming pile: Rockman and Loco Roco. Otherwise, I totally agree with hermegildo. All I usually use it for now is "teh romz". But even that has taken a backseat to the DS right now for me. :(

I don't know about the rest of youz, but I think it's worth it.

IMO,of course.

Exit is fun,Boku no watashi no Katamari is great, and both RR and Lumines kicks ass.

Between SFZ3,GGXX#Reload,Darkstalkers (thanks to the SFZ3 d-pad),and teh romz,I've been playing mine non-stop.

Oh yeah, and let's not forget about the video playback (AVC is great, especially for anime eps.).

If this sounds good to you, then go for it.

Games worth buying IMO:
Star Soldier JP
Lumines
Namco Battle Collection

Sorry I never liked Wipeout. Ridge Racer is dumb "blonde bombshell" material, Gameshare is a joke, Kingdom of Paradise is beyond repetitive and boring, Untold Legends was fun for a week, and then became a repetitivefest of hack, pickup, sell for more potions, repeat.

Plus, I realize that a grown adult will naturally take care of items he/she paid good coin for, but I still find playing with optical media on a portable is still odd... still so afraid of scratching and smudging those discs.

So.... until a 2D Castlevania comes out, more 2D compilations, more 8+ player party games, and PSP + PS2 connectivity, I think the PSP has turned out to be a big mistake. It has so much potential, it just seems Sony isn't trying at all to get good stuff out there, and keep new releases under $35 instead of fucking $50.

So save your coin, play the shit on DS or PS2 and forget the PSP if you ask me. The only thinkg keeping me from selling my PSP now is that I promised my Wife I would never sell it, and for the small glimpse of hope that something worthwhile may come out for this otherwise nearly perfect piece of hardware.

Oh yeah, Katamari, that's a good one. Do you gotta update your firmware to play this one, or are all the latest releases forcing you to do this?

Stupid question, I know.

I used to own a PSP when it first came out but then I sold it and bought a DS. I played the DS ten times more than I ever played the PSP. Then Grand theft auto came out so I bought another one, that game is awesome and is totally worth owning a PSP! As far as movies and music goes on PSP, it's not worth it. Only buy it if you're going to enjoy the games. In the case of Sakura Taisen, I absoloutely love the anime, I'm trying to get the Le Nouveau Paris OVA on DVD now. I did own the Sakura Taisen PS2 game though, It was awesome but man the language barrier hit me hard! 98% of it was in japanese so I couldn't read it. I stumbled my way through a few missions but I wanted to experience the relationship aspect of the game. I didn't enjoy it as much as I wanted to and I probably wouldn't buy another Sakura game.

I voted yes. The last option doesn't make much sense as I wouldn't buy a system that didn't have games I wanted (reason I don't own the DS.) A lot of games have caught my eye, but I have only chosen to buy Hot Shot's Golf, Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories, and Virtua Tennis. Hot Shot's Golf eventually got boring, GTA will be boring once I beat it, Virtua Tennis will probably end up the same way.

If you really want those games and see something(anything) else you'd like playing I'd go ahead and do it. Some real "original" games are coming out this year too.

Having an MP3 players already I barely use it for that, and I don't really use it for videos either, but occasionally I have and loved it.

Oh and I updated my firmware all the way to play Virtua Tennis and haven't cared about teh romz.

It's too expensive. There are a few good games, but they are expensive too, and there aren't enough of them yet.

Well, the Anime is of course based on the games.

As far as I know the only legit version of the Le Nouveau Paris OVA is the Japanese R2 version and it's easy enough to find. ;)

As far as the language barrier, I've got a decent spoken vocabulary under my belt and a beginner grasp, at best, of the written language. It took me a while, but I got through the game (and Sakura Taisen V) and understood more than enough to thorouhly enjoy it. And if you really want to understand what's being said, there are always tranlsation guides to help.

This is going to sound stupid, and I know I could just go look it up, but I'd rather have someone here describe it. What is Lumines? Game type and all that.

The fighting games are a draw to the system, though I don't feel that alone can justify it for me.

And I don't really care much about video playback. May look good for Anime, but I'd rather watch on a "bigger than the PSPs TFT screen" TV. It might be something I'd enjoy if I didn't have a laptop I can watch DVDs on (though I don't) or had no other option.

Lumines is basically an action/puzzle game like Tetris, with trippy graphics and music. It's a lot of fun, and definitely something to pick up if you get a PSP.

Everything else for the system is pretty much ports. There are definitely some good ports, like Ridge Racers, Twisted Metal and Burnout, but if you've already played them on the PS2 there's really nothing new. The future for PSP games doesn't look promising either (in the USA anyway), the only ones that interest me are Gran Turismo mobile and Katamari (which of course are more ports).

It does have some nice features, like MP3 playback, videos, pictures and web browsing, but unless you're going to use those features a lot it's really not worth the money.

Not really.

There aren't enough good games out, and really the only draw to the PSP is its styling and the ability to play movies.

And who the fuck wants to watch movies on that thing?

I say no, I would have instantly sold my PSP if it weren't for Ride Racers--its the only reason why I'm holding on to it. Oh, and did I mention I'm on my third system?

PSP is worth buying and the only down side is the current price. Their are plenty of decent titles as BIG mentioned, and it also doubles as a MP3 player, media player, and ROM player. The DS fan boys in this site have gotten people brainwashed against the PSP.

PSP is a huge-ass dissappointment. The only games worthwile are Lumines and WipE'out" Fusion. There are MP3, web surfing, and the ability to rip DVDs to the system, but big enough memory cards that hold 1-2 movies are upwards of $150. The MP3 player function is said to be very cumbersome and hard to use, not to mention the same to rip DVDs. The only other saving grace of this system is the ROMz and homebrews, but you can't play newer games if you go this route. There aren't really any good systems supported on the Romz anyway.

To add insult to it, the only worthy future games are ports (Gran Turismo, Katamari), and very few original games are coming out except for Loco Roco, which might not even get a US release.

Are there even any worthwile Imports for this thing besides Star Solider?

Great, thanks for the link. Now to scape up $275 so I can watch 90 minutes of anime on a new region free player! I think it's worth it.
