Small piece of info down the page

What would it look like? Xbox boss Peter Moore says any Microsoft media device would have to leverage the company's most significant consumer strength, video gaming. "It can't just be our version of the iPod," says Moore, who nonetheless would not confirm that Microsoft is considering making such a device. So in addition to playing music and videos, a Microsoft device would include games. Microsoft would probably use the Xbox brand to market the gadget. "I think the brand is an opportunity," Moore says.

Clearly Microsoft has the money(and are willing to lose it) to enter the hand held market. However, with the DS and the PSP out there I really can't see why anyone else would want to get their ass handed to them. The PSP has most of the music, movies, gaming covered already. And Nintendo has proven that while they have lost their touch with Consoles they rule the hand held market when it comes to games.

Agreed, they would run a distant third at least in this generation.

With the amount of money that Team Gates has, I know we will always be suprised with the efforts of Microsofts Gaming Division...

But an Xbox handheld?

I'd buy it, but probably wouldn't play it...

Shit, I own all of the current handhelds and only play the GBA Micro

I doubt they would market it as a full fledged handheld.

More like an enhanced Windows Media Center remote.

One that can play the crappy flash games off of Live.

Xbox LIVE Arcade is HARDLY crappy...

There are some great titles that really keep you busy and coming back for more....

A new one was just released that plays like Marble Madness meets Monkey Ball + Mercury...

Yeah I guess. But that Hexwhatever is pretty dumb / schockwave.com type flash crap.

I guess it was only a matter of time.
Maybe they'll get the analog control right so we can have a decent handheld shooter?

Probably not.

Whatever the case, any "handheld" MS puts out will probably have a size/weight ratio similar to a brick.

Personally, I think it will be a Windows Mobile 5.0 device. Logical since its their new porta-OS. If such a device could have PDA functionality, touchscreen(Of course), large HD for portable storage and music, and have a decent D-pad and buttons for gaming... I'm all over it.

I need something to replace my aging grumpy Dell Axim X5.

Microsoft... please by all means give it a shot. But don't give it an XBOX brand name. If you do... I'll scrape it off. :loco:

Microsoft wants to make a hybrid PSP/iPod device? Why are they always so focused on copying other people's ideas?

It's music interface won't be as good as the iPod, it's screen won't be as nice as the PSP, and it's games won't be as fun as the DS.

I think Microsoft should attempt to create something new that will be so cool that people will have to want it, like the iPod was when it was introduced. But being innovative isn't MS's strong point.

Microsoft said before they wouldn't enter the handheld market and I believe them. They need to devote their energy to the Xbox 360 all they way.
