I have a chance to get a windy.....wondering if it's worth the extra $80 over the price of the astro?

and why or why not?

As for the asthetics, the Windy has speakers on either side of the monitor (which I prefer). Mine also came with a Konomi stereo adapter for the jamma harness. The monitor bezel lifts up like a car hood and locks (although this won't make rotating the monitor any easier..actually it makes it more difficult). I really dig the looks of the Windy over Astro.

Now the down sides of the Windy. Mine didn't come with the original monitor, so I can't verify it, but I herd its not as great as the standard nano that comes in an Astro. Also the windy monitor is a bitch to rotate, there is no mounting frame, just mounting "handles", so you are VERY likely to crack the tube neck if you don't do it the right way.

NGT are you going down to LA to pick one up? Have room for another in your truck? ;)

Thanks for the info!!! If I got it, it would stay horizontal and have a 7 button layout. $675 shipped just kills me though.

sorry, it would be Van Lines bringing it up. I WISH I HAD A TRUCK!!! I would be at bill burger's sale on the 27th for sure!!!! I drive a 98 Maxima and there's no room for cabs in that, lol... :(

What model Astro? the New Astro or just the Astro?
The New Astro has better speakers.

Personally I would say to go with an Astro over a Windy, here's why.

About 6 months ago I ordered a used, repainted Windy cab.
Pick the cab up and there's a nice ding on the control pannel(from shipping, so this was just my experiance). Get the cab to my house and go to slide in the basement, oh wait it won't fit through the door? Nope, just barely though. So I find another spot to stick it. The first thing I noticed when firing it up was the monitor, didn't really have noticable burn in but was generally blury overall. The cab was shipped to me in vertical mode so I start up a game of Gundhara and about every time I hit the fire button the monitor flickers and to this day I haven't been able to play it because of that problem.

I may always be bitter about Windys, even when mine gets fixed. Come to think of it I should go make a post in tech support right now about my problem, it might be really simple.

Anyone know how much it would cost me to get a new monitor for my Windy, possibly a nicer one if they're even still sold?

About the monitor picture quality. I've also got an Impress and it blows the Windy out of the water in every department.

That's a shame you got a crappy Windy cab. I heard the cabs are really nice, but like any cab..they all differ even if it's the same model. The general consensus though is that Sega made cabinets are the best. Which model Astro City would you be getting... Astro1, New Astro or Astro2? I have a New Astro and I love it!

A guy in tech support is currently helping me figure out the problem, but yeah it does suck, especiall for what I paid to get it from Cali to Vermont. Oh well, I'll most likely only be buying new/near new cabs in the future.

I have yet to play on an actual Astro but I think I like the looks of the New Astro myself. I'd like to try at least one Astro model but as I said, I'll for sure be getting some more Impress cabs when I've got the space, they are awesome.

Hey Chief,

damn, Sorry to hear of your probs with the windy. I can only imagine the frustration. I remember thinking about getting a windy repaint around the same time frame you mentioned. Hope you get it all sorted out man.

Man, I remember having so much frustration when I first got into arcade cabs. I spent tons of money and got very little results. I had been fucked over a couple times by some dead beat eBay sellers. BTW, if there is an arcade monitor for sale and it's coming from Indiana...don't buy it, prob. the same asshole. Anyways, it will get better, I promise. Stick to your guns and you'll have a great working cab in no time! ;)

I like the Windy, but if I had to make a choice vs an Astro (especially a "new" Astro)... I'd go with SEGA. Don't have comparison pics of my Astro, but here are some Windy shots. I think it has a kind of charm to it... especially with Salamander 2 in it.
