I want to get into the Sega Naomi system, but I am not sure what system to buy. It reminds me of the Turbografx in way, where you had a system, then a cd rom attachment and only certain games worked on certain systems. I would be using a supergun, so I wanted to know what the ideal setup would be, that would allow me to play most games. I know I would need a i/o jamma converter and it looks like the capcom one is the way to go, but what setup should i look into getting?

Well a naomi 1 motherboard and a capcom I/O is all you need if your talking basics. But your really also going to need a gd rom/dimm board to go with that since being only able to play just cart based games will limit you. We are talking $230 for just the mobo and I/O board alone and another $210 for the gd rom/dimm combo.

So pretty much the ideal setup would be a Naomi 2 mobo with the Capcom I/O, if you can afford it that is. Then later on you could get the GD rom add on and you would be set. If you got a Naomi 1 mobo and you wanted the GD rom then you would have to buy an extra power supply.

A Dreamcast :D

Seriously, it would be Naomi 2 + Capcom I/O + GD drive kit. You could replace the naomi 2 with a 1 if you don't plan on playing VF4, although I heard the GD drive works better in a naomi 2 than in a naomi 1 when using the Capcom I/O to power it.

I would like my games to play in english, so does it matter what region the naomi 2 mobo and gdrom unit are? Also, I noticed that some games play in medium resolution, so will those be unplayable on a standard tv?

If you can get a Naomi 2, do it. It's great. I have two Naomi 1s and a Naomi 2, and I love them. 2 can play both systems, so if you have the money, do it. I admit the ONLY game I wand and play on my N2 is VF4evo... but isn't that reason enough? Button layout might be your only problem. Virtua Fighter is very distinct, and I love the US six button layout for Capcom fighters... may have to buy two of them. ;)

Naomi 2 + Capcom I/O is a good set-up, as you don't need a seprate psu for the gd rom drive for Jamma cabs.

Naomi uni's have JVS (Jamma 2), so it plugs straight in.

I put mine on a board for ease of use & to take in & out of my cab (mini-cute)

not really that good if you want a Naomi set-up for a SG as it can get quite noisy.

Keep in mind the naomi 2 is only useful for playing one game which is Virtual fighter 4 final tuned, and since a naomi 2 mobo will run you $150 at the least compared to a naomi 1 mobo $80 max price tag you need to ask yourself is it worth the extra cost unless your planing on buying final tuned that is. I don't know how a naomi 2 mobo is set up but on a naomi 1 you can switch resolutions at will on the motherboard. I think the ideal set up would be a naomi 1 with capcom I/O and a gd rom set up. Buy a power supply to work with the capcom I/O and gd rom or buy that special cable I read about that lets you bypass the extra power supply. I myself have a naomi 1 with capcom I/O and a dimm board, I'm planning on purchasing the gd rom next month.

Fuck final tuned. They didn't bring it to the states, so screw them. If you do Evo, you only need the cart, and not the GD drive. Which would allow you to still play a ton of kick ass games. First two VF4 games, CvsSNK, Marvel vs Capcom 2, Virtua Tennis.... DOA2. Yep, there's more to get if you get the GD drive, but start small then work up to that.

Evo was Euro anyway, not a proper US realese, all the Sega flyers have the UK address on them & not the US 1, I have a Evo kit, you just have a cart.

Yes, I play just the cart. Thanks for the reminder. Evo came out on US consoles, which is enough for me to consider a release here. Nobody here in the states would know what "final tuned" was if I asked them. Real die hard gamers that don't go to Neo Geo.com. Hell, some people here and at shoryuken still don't know what it means. That's what I'm talking about. Screw Sega if they didn't want to bring a copy here in any way, shape or form. That's my point.

The ultimate Naomi setup? Naomi Watts and Naomi Campbell :chimp: Like many others have said, go with the Naomi 2 + GD-ROM since you'll be able to play everything with this setup.

Fuck a Naomi.

Just rig up a PS2 and a DC to your cab and that's all you'll ever need.

The cart of VF4 & VF4 evo are for export bios only, the gd rom versions of VF4, VF4 evo & FT are for Japanese bios only.

I have a Evo full cart kit, never seen another 1 apart from mine!

Christ is that ignorant. Have you seen VFevo on an actual arcade machine? I played it for hours and hours on PS2 before getting it in a cab. Maybe 40 or 50 hours in total before it. My god there's a big difference in clarity. I can't tell if you're joking or not, however...

Well most Naomi 2 cabinets have VGA video output as opposed to the Playstation2 which the best quality video you can get is component video/RGB. You can however buy a Component > VGA video adapter. I hear these things work very very well and get extremely nice clarity. So you would basically be playing in 480p which is the same as Naomi Hi-res VGA. Also Dreamcasts native video output is VGA. The Dreamcast is more or less a consolized Naomi. It's not that ignorant, give it a try...it's great! :D

I know about the DC, and I'm not denying that. The PS2 thign, on the other hand, is retarded. Only a idiot would do that instead of doing and N2. The $$$ difference isn't THAT big. I HAVE hooked my DC up with the VGA cable to my high res 27 inch cab, and it's beautiful. I admit. However, it's still not the arcade... no quarters needed=lame to me. It's not that I'm trying to get the feel of the arcade, I WANT the arcade. DC is Naomi, but PS2 is NOT Naomi 2. lol

Yeah, but uh... price?

If you're not using a high res monitor in your cab in the first place, then the whole point's pretty much moot.

VF4 in PS2 IS an INFERIOR PORT, it just doesn't even compare to the original, even in low-res.
