Hi everyone,

just registered and first post.

I have just bought a stone age/tatty cabinet. Please see Here . I am picking it up on Monday and know nothing about it really. It looks to be an original SNK unit but is converted/is Jamma type. I am mainly interested in running old Neo Geo fighters, I was a big fan of Art Of Fighting back in the day. I was toying with Mame ideas, but will these fighters run much better with the official machine?

Am I right in thinking I will now just need a slot pcb like This and then the MVS cartridges. Or are other things needed? Bits of it probably won't work but will I need a PSU type device or should that be present?

Thanks for any help, I really want to get this sorted!

I'd definitely recommend using a real PCB instead of emulation.

If they did, indeed change the wiring to be standard jamma instead of MVS, it shouldn't be a big deal to change it back. There isn't much difference. Everything you need to do that should be available on www.hardmvs.com.

Depending on what PCB it was intended for, you may need a more powerful power supply to run a multislot board like the one you linked. It would probably run a 1 or 2 slot just fine, though.

Thanks Murray,

Ahh, I though the power supply would be universal throughout the range of PCB's. I was thinking only one game is running so power usage would be similar. I will look out for single/double slots then, don't see them on Ebay quite as often. I was a little worried about them physically fitting as well.

Thanks for the link. I will read up over there. Is there no danger then if the power supply is meant for a multiple slot and you use a single? Too much power is not a concern?

In a word, no. Current draw is (almost) always controlled by the device and not the supply. IE, the board sucks the power out of the supply, not the supply forces power into the board.

Games use different amounts of power because things like the Mega-Play (or whatever the arcade Genesis was) use 1 or 2 ROMs per game, while the Neo uses around 12 per game on average. It also has 2 processors, powerful video hardware, etc.

Use the real hardware for sure. Emulation sucks when the real stuff is still available. Much more badass when your friends come over and you have stacks of arcade PCB's and ask them what they want to play, as opposed to a PC with shit that anybody can download with a torrent client.

Plus when you own the hardware you get to learn all about how to fix and diagnose the hardware (which is the fun part!! at least for me...) :eye:

cheers,

Thanks for all the replies, I really appreciate it. I did want the real article but I know my way round computers and thought it may be easier. But after reading and your help it seems pretty easy to bang one of these together and the games I want are cheap. Not to say I wouldn't want newer ones but I am unaware of the MS series etc.. But will give them a try eventually. One thing with multiple games emulated is you move from one to the other and never play them to death like a bought one.

I have emailed someone from Ebay about ending early on a single slot board.

I think I have a lot of restoring to do on the cabinet front, but hey i'm pretty poor and fingers crossed it'll work!

If it's JAMMA you could also just get a single slot board since, from my understanding, it is JAMMA and does not require a MVS harness. Don't let the harness keep you from getting what you want though. If you want a 4-slot board... go for the gusto!

I don't think I am that bothered really how many slots it has. It might be a bit easier having more but if I make access quite good I don't mind changing carts!

The ad says it is Jamma but I have yet to see it. Mind you I couldn't tell you if it was Jamma or not :)

The single slots tend to be a bit cheaper than the others too. I am likely to start with a single game anyway and will probably play that to death before progressing to another.

That's how I started out -- a 1 slot board and Magical Drop II (which will own you all for free). Then Samurai Shodown 4, 'cause it was cheap (and awesome).

Now I've got a 4 slot cabinet, all 6 samurai shodowns, 6 KOF's (94-99), the first four Metal Slugs, and a few other assorted cartridges.

Welcome to the addiction.
(Give me another fix! <WHAM!> Thank you Sir, may I have another!)

Nice cab. it's an Electrocoin custom. I have one the same, but yours seems to be a dedicated Neo.

All you need is a MVS board and a couple of carts and you should be fine.

Taking a second look at the picture, it may have had a multi-slot board in it to begin with. Maybe that red button top center was for changing games? I wonder if the original harness is still intact? Let us know when you get your hands on it. :D

Thats all I could think the red button was for. But then again it could only be a double slot. Either way I think it is better for me to play safe and get a single slot. A few mvs carts are finishing in couple of days (ebay), i'll get one or two. I think I may have got a one slot with memory card bit to it. Doesn't take Paypal though so a week or so wait is likely. Enough time to tidy it up some. Hopefully I can get some more decor bits. Around the joystick it looks stained or burnt or something! I can only expect a mess for £40 I guess.

I will let you know when I know, I'm getting it Monday morning so maybe I will know more then. The guy said Jamma harness and he runs a fruit machine place so he may be in the know on such things. More so than me no doubt!

Hey all,

I have ordered a single slot board for my new toy and I am picking the cab up tomorrow morning.

Is there a method for me to test various parts of the cabinet. The reason I ask is the board may take around a week to come through and i'd like to get its home ready. The picture shows the monitor fired up, so I guess I am safe there. But should I test the power supply, baring in mind i'm from the UK. I will most likely strip down the control panel and check all buttons and joysticks. I need to recoat it with something, any ideas? looks pretty scruffy as is.

Cheers

I'd wait to check the power supply, some of the older ones don't like having no current drawn. If you're sure it's safe, just check the voltage between +5v and ground, +12v and ground, etc. with a voltmeter.

I don't recommend MAME at all for anything but stuff like pacman, buy a two slot MVS off ebay. If you REALLYY want to do emulation, mod an xbox and use FBAXX. XBOX is really the only solid emulation option in my expirence, and I've probbaly built about 5 differnt emulation oriented PC's for my CandyCabs.

In the end, nothing beats the real thing.

Nah, not bothered about emulation really. It would have been a 2.8 AthlonXP gig of ram blah blah. So would have been quite quick, its just I have a computer that is getting stripped down to make some room. I just use my laptop now really. I will be happier with my new Neo though! Just bought KOF 95 and SS1 to test and get the ball rolling.

I picked up the cab and its a mess! Cig burns everywhere. Every thing seems to work, just all a bit scruffy. I have ordered a few new buttons and 2 new sticks today and I'm still waiting on the board and carts. I have torn off all the old control panel covering, sanded off the rust and painted it with protective paint. I am then going to coat it with black vinyl tomorrow. I dont know where I would find more original coverings in the UK. Mind you I only paid £40 for it and there was £6.00 in change kicking about in the cab! Making the price £34!

Well all my equipment has arrived and wasn't working at first. After looking round and testing various bits the problem was a faulty switch on one of the doors. The switch made the system think a door was open when it was shut. I have just done away with the switch and box connected the wires together. It now looks a bit smarter, I have new buttons and sticks. And works just fine.

My other games haven't arrived yet but my teenage love of Art Of Fighting remains. It does look dated now but I still love it. I used to get to Micky on my first continue and now only make Jack!

The only problem I have is with Horizontal size on the monitor. A couple of letters/numbers are missing off the edge of the screen. I have adjusted the monitor but the min size still doesn't fit on the screen. Anything I can do? Its nothing much, just can see only 1/2 a number for credits and half the first letter of text dialogues. Would have looked better if I could fit the whole screen on.

It is an original SNK MVS machine. The monitor appears to be a Samsung. But unfortunately has now lost its original looks. It is nearly all black now, the old control panel was too rusty to save. And the marquee I ordered is going to be mame!! It was the only design I could find and liked. Ryu and Wolverine on the sides with MAME writing in the middle.

What did you adjust? The width coil? Does it have jumpers for width? - Some monitors do but it's very few & far betwen. Far more have jumpers to move the screen a little to the left or right but not to adjust the width.

If you adjusted the width coil downwards and still didn't get enough reduction, try bringing it back up until you do... The coil may look like it's trying to come all the way out.

Be careful when adjusting coils. They tend to stick due to age and the slugs you are trying to turn are VERY fragile. use plastic tools ONLY. DO NOT use screwdrivers or metal allen wrenches. You WILL destroy the slug if you do.

What is the model number of the monitor? Not the picture tube... Samsung made a lot more picture tubes than they did arcade monitors. This will help us to understand what you need to adjust since we can dig up schematics on the monitor.

I adjusted the plastic screw head that is diplayed for the H size. I moved it from one extreme to the other. In this adjustment range it grows larger and smaller twice over, the same. But never goes small enough. I am unsure of any jumpers doing the same.

I am not sure where to find that information. There is however a sticker stuck to the back of the monitor saying Samsung and then the following information.

51GDD95X - TDC
No. K911150353
E65799 - KLR29831

The sticker on the tube is for the tube, not the monitor chassis.

Look on the metal parts for another sticker with a model number... it may also be either stickered or silkscreened on the boards...

Thanks,

I can't see another label or anything. KT 2028 is displayed on one part but I don't believe that is it. CAn you not do monitor adjustment in the software settings bit of it? I don't know how you boot it into this though. It says in the manual I have just downloaded, the board is a 1f, that you just switch it to test. The switch has wires that have been snipped though. I am not sure where they belong.
