I thought I knew what this is, but now I'm not sure. I thought it was using an exploit in the game to cheat, yet TNL says it involves using a power slide on straight aways. I'm confused.

What do you guys think of snaking? What exactly is it anyway?

When you are racing and do a powerslide boost back and forth across straight aways its refered to as "snaking".

Pussies and little girls call it cheating.

It's not cheating, but it is definitely an exploit.

It's not like it breaks the game or anything.

This game angers me waaay to much. If somebody started doing this to me, I would probably shoot somebody... Which is why I sold it! :D

It's not cheating, but it's cheap and annoying. And thumb-hurting. I think it is specially lame when snakers select ONLY tracks suitable for snaking, like somebody I raced who would select ONLY the 8-track and he got it 3 of the 4 times.

I don't think it is cheating either, and I respect skilled snakers because you have to be good to snake well. I can beat average snakers without even using the technique myself.

However, I do think it breaks the game on-line. Snakers just appear and disappear out of nowhere, don't show up on the map sometimes, and there have been times when their weapons have just popped out of nowhere to hit me.

If someone can snake Rainbow Road and win then fair play, but the scrubs that just try and race Eight Cross are a joke.

I personally don't snake unless the opponent is a skilled snaker, and even then I am no expert at it.

+1 to that.

meh, snaking is cool with me, but if your object just to do that forever, you're just abusing the game and conduct of sportmanship. If they had the feature to turn it off I wonder how these snakes can really race.

Its gay. I use teh boost around corners, like it should be used, and i control it well. But by no means would i use it on a straight track. Thats gay and doing so takes the tecnique out of context.

Next time I play you on Lugi Mansion I am going to see how closely you stick to that ;)

I've not played Mario Kart DS yet (still yet to get a DS, I will though), but I used to do this 'snaking' thing all the time in Mario Kart 64.

On the time trial mode, anyway.

I just never found it much fun when there where other karts in the race. Smashin' 'em with shells when they were about to win was so much more satisfying...

Anyway, it's not cheating. If you regard it as... unethical, then surely a simple gentleman's agreement before a race would solve the problem?

The problem is that unless you personally know the other racer and he is in your friend list, you can't make an "agreement" because there's no way to communicate with the other racers before of after the on-line match.

Ah, I didn't realise there was no pre-race communication. I had imagined a lobby of sorts for setting up races and choosing opponents.

Please disregard my premature and inapplicable comment. :)

If there WAS a lobby, however, my suggestion would work, which just proves Nintendo should have put me in charge of the whole thing.

I think if they made the track random then there wouldnt be as many people complaining about snaking.

You think i snake on that course? I come winding around the side and use the boost to get over the first patch of mud. That runs out and I slide around the next corner launching me over that mud till the next patch of land, I slide again sideways coming up to the last corner and do it again as im still turning. All in all I do this to get over the mud and you dont seem to slide if your using teh boost over this section. I may snake a little here but only because I dont want to slow down over the mud.

I'm only joking, but it is true there is a fine line between snaking and min-turbos on some courses.

I am up for a game soon though. Maybe tomorrow morning my time? I am finding it tough to get a game on WiFi these days. On top of that, most of the people I play just disconnect the second they start losing so my stats don't get much better.

Im going to milestones for dinner tonight and then im going out to see a movie. Ill be back and ill look for you. Probably home at like 1:30 or something. WHich would be good for your time. Ill hop on and look for you. :)

Yeah if they disconnect it gives them two loses. There loss, whatever. I thought that you got a win out of it though. I could be wrong on that.

On a side note I would really love to get that hack for the ds that allows the extra courses to be picked. Maybe there is a wifi hack that you could do to somehow upload it to the game. SOmething I have to look into aswell.

You might not want to wait too much longer - those red DS sets are getting harder to find now, and that's the best way to get the game if you have no DS. I was tempted, and I got the blue one with free Mario..

As far as snaking goes, for me it's one of those techniques that crosses the line from "Wow, he's good" to "Does this loser have nothing better to do?" - and not because of the amount of skill required. It's a degenerate tactic that makes the game less fun, like bunny-hopping in FPS, or what goldfarming does to MMO economies. Sure, it's hard to do really well, the 'holes who cheese it are just annoying. For me, it's a problem if there's a tactic in Mario Kart that trumps racing the way you're supposed to, perfectly.
