Best MVS 1-slot board to consolize (sorry, search is down).

I was just wondering which 1-slot MVS board is considered the best for consolization. I'd run a search, but apparently the search function is either down or just not working for me.

So anyway, if you guys could give some suggestions on which versions of the 1-slots are better and whatnot, I'd really appreciate it. Also, is the MV-1FS any good when it comes to being consolized?

Thanks in advance.

you should go check em all out at hardmvs.com.

Few pointers:

The 1A is a regular choice
http://www.hardmvs.com/html/MV-1A.htm

The 1B is TINY! but you will need to swap the (socketed) bios for it to work with games other than Irr.Maze
http://www.hardmvs.com/html/MV-1B.htm

The 1C has a "top-loader" style, but a soldered bios
http://www.hardmvs.com/html/MV-1C.htm

Others aren't worth it really.

You mean FZ right?
The only differences between the MV-1A and the MV-1FZ are the amperages, The MV-1A takes +5V 3A, and the MV-1FZ takes +5V 7A and the socketed BIOS is closer to the Jamma connector on the MV-1A

So for ease of powering the thing compared to the FZ, and just as a general recommendation, use the MV-1A

Oh, and remember that of the 1-slots, only the MV1 and MV1F have controller ports, which saves 15 soldering points and keeps the jamma edge clearer.

Perhaps consider these if you are not after the full on Supergoose/KJP style consolized 1-slots.

The BIOS on the 1-B is soldered.

Indeed the 1B is soldered

I'm no saint - the hardMVS website is superb.

But it's not the gospel... in fact some of the info you reported is not correct. For instance, only a few of the MV-1B motherboards come with the Irritating Maze bios, the majority have a normal bios (albeit in SMD package). And the amperage info on the MV-1A and MV-1FZ is taken from the manuals, which never give the actual current draws but just generic suggestion on what PSU to use. Not even a 6-slot draws 7A... both the MV-1A and the MV-1FZ draw little more than 1A on +5v.

For a beginner that doesn't want to mess with a surface mounted bios chip, I would go with the 1F (only because of joystick ports), followed by the 1FZ. The older one slots are just to big (I think).

If you don't mind wiring a socket, the 1C is nice and compact and a new casing can be easily made.

Or just get a 2-slot: that's hands down the best mobo (joy ports, socketed bios, headphone jacks, memory card reader) and very easy to consolize.

Seconded. This should be your order of preference, assuming you don't have special casing constraints (IE you want to build into a Sega Genesis, etc.)

1) MV-2
2) MV-1F
3) MV-1A or MV-1 - depends on whether you need small or built-in controller ports
4) Whatever 3 isn't

The MV-1 is large, but if you're careful about how you lay out your design, assuming you're going for a nice-looking case, you can stack ontop of the front of the board and waste as little space as possible.

If you want an easy Fully Featured setup (Stereo, Socketed Bios, Onboard Ports), go with the MV1-F.

IF you want something realy nice looking, go with the MV1-C

Just had to throw in my .02USD here, but there have been a lot of reports of porblems using playmore games in MV1F and MV1 systems (some reports of sporadic workings in MV1FZ as well).

I have an MV1A for portability. every game works perfect, but no controller ports (that's why they are in the supergun!). If you want a 1 slot w/ memory card you'd have to use the MV1 but it's HUGE!!! Almost 2 slot sized?

Remember to consider whether or not you want to play any new games when you are building, versus the energy saved by not wiring controller ports.

cheers,

4-slot>2-slot.

Does this mean the 4 slot is bigger than the 2 slot, or better?

Of course since I have a 4 slot I tend to agree that both are true...

:)

*EDIT*
Oh yeah and I forgot to add above, the MV-1A, MV-1, MV-1F, MV1-FZ all have socketed bios. MV-1AX has an easier non-socketed bios (like some or all aes have, same DIP package as the regular bios) The MV-1B and MV-1C would be the hardest to change the BIOS on since it is a surface mounted chip and not DIP.

From what I can remember, both are the same size.

That probably depends on which 4 slot and which 2 slot. I know there are least 2 sizes of 4 slot.

Don't Bother Consolizing a 4-Slot.......

It's just not worth your time/money compared to consolizeing a 2 Slot.....

I have no trouble with the latest Playmore releases (SSVS, MS5, SVC, KOF03, etc.) in my MV-1F. Mine's got a UniBIOS, so YMMV.
