Anywhere I go, when people are selling arcade machines, half of them are Golden Tee. What's up with this? WHY is it so damn popular? Anyone?

Probably because of the fact that it's easy to learn how to play. Also because of the fact that it hasn't really been brought over to the home market yet. Or at least a version where you use a trakball since most trakball controllers don't compare to ones in the arcade. Another reason being is that golf went from a sport that only guys wearing Argyle sweaters played to a sport where just about every celebrity and sports figure now plays.

Its a firm favorite Pub game... People will always head for those kinda games, especially in bars/pubs.

Its kinda fun, but I guess it gets better when you have had a few..

There's a lot for sale because it's one of the few games these days that has saturated the arcade and game route market. As others have said, it's an easy game to understand, it's one of the few games that appeals to adults and women and it can be a challenge, plus in many places, the bars have tournaments, both in the place and via online (since the later versions have modems to promote online competition). Only major drawback to it is Incredible Technologies (the maker of the game) keeps making upgrades and for some, it's hard to keep up with them. People want the latest version or they won't play it at all. For some operators, it's easier to sell the games than to buy the upgrades. Cabinet-wise, the Golden Tee dedicated series are well-built and sturdy.

Incredible was fucking smoking crack when they came up with this game.

the lack of analog aiming pisses me off.

Being able to play with a pool cue however, is rockin.

I used to have an older Golden Tee in the arcade and boy, did people try and spin the old track-ball as hard as they could. Since mine was in a converted NBA Jam cabinet, the monitor glass was closer to the control panel than the dedicated versions so every once in awhile, you'd hear a luod "SMACK!!!" when a person's hand hit the glass because they try as hell to hit the trackball at full speed. We didn't keep the game long since it did poor...not a good arcade piece. They're meant for bars and taverns.

Drunk people like to play it. That's why it's at almost every bar (at least in the US). I would assume it makes quite a bit of $$$ for a bar owner. If I ever owned one, I would just put Silver Strike Bowling in it, that game rocks. That game is way more fun than GT.

How turds like this displaced gems like Neo Turf Masters is beyond me.

I just don't get it, either. NTM is amazing... granted, I've not really gotten into GT. The graphics are so ass that I just can't get passed them.

I have never played Golden Tee. However, there is one in almost every bar around my university campus. One place also has a few other cabs....nearest thing we have to an arcade.

I have an SSB shirt that says, "8 lb balls and I still score."

Analog controls tend to wear out much faster. That is why they are rare as heck.

Golden Tee also has a neat trick of linked competitive play via phone network systems. So the entire WORLD is linked to that bugger.

Cost and bang for the buck, it simply rocks. That is why you see it everywhere in sight.

It's also a game that's socially acceptable for older dudes. I never see it in university bars, but rather businessmen bars and the like.

That and as said, it's saturated, so it's familiar. To some drunken bastard, I guess that's more comforting than a Street Fighter Alpha 2 cab...

Golden Tee is nothing more than a frat boy meat head's excuse for a golf game. I'll stick with NTM! :)

When I'm out at the bar, I'll sometimes have a go at Golden Tee.

It's also online with the scoring.

It's pretty popular, being easy to play when you're sloshed.
