Other than the fact they're not collectable whatsoever, what is the major downside to bootleg carts?

Other then the fact that they are buggy and sometimes missing the endings, nothing.

Word. That is what I did. I though,"Hey, as long as it works, who cares."

Well guess what? They don't work. I have probably had over 20 bootlegs and I have only found one that worked perfectly. And maybe it wasn't even perfect. You'd have to play every last part of it to be sure. Maybe when buying $20 games, getting a boot isn't the end of the world. Shell out $100 for a cart and when you find out it is a boot - Big Deal.

I just got tired of messing with them. Sending them back, contacting the seller, working things out. At one point I decided, if I'm buying an expensive game from a seller I don't know, they better show me the boards inside or no sale.

I've had boots of Metal Slug, KoF96 & Neo Drift Out and they all had the same problem - NO SOUND :blow_top:

I like it when the stuff I buy actually works the way it should.:chimp:

Most of the bootlegs are just crappy hack jobs.

Bootlegs

The roms on a computer work pretty well for me. Speaking of bootlegs anyone know where I can get some for the Neo CD? There are a few games that I want that I am unable to locate. I don't buy stuff off ebay anymore so don't suggest that.

Roms=:shame:

The discussion of Neo Geo roms is not looked well upon in this forum.

Discussion of ROMs and Emulators is generally not looked well upon here. There are many emulation forums where people will share your opinions, but at Neo-Geo.com most members do not look kindly upon emulation of NeoGeo games, most especially recent releases. Posting a topic such as "Get the ROMs for (recent game) here!" or "Why pay for your games, the ROMs are free?" will more than likely get you banned.

I buy games for the Neo and many SNK non Neo games...The Rom is a great way to try before you buy or buy something that you did'nt know about. I just bought 4 CD games off the Neostore here. I contribute to the cause like many other people here. I load up roms at school in the PC lab and play then people get interested. I just imported a Neo CD from Japan plus 8 games. I was'nt discussing them just stating they work well. I believe the conversion to be worse than any Rom since they are hacked up.

Because you pay good money for good games and not to be fooled into buying something unoffical and unprofessionally done.

Bootlegs of games prior to (97?) a certain year will work better than ones made after.

There's a certain year cutoff where every Neo game produced after is encrypted. Today, we can properly encrypt/decrypt Neo games - back then when it was actually worth bootlegging the games, people couldn't. It's why you see bootlegs of Garou that have no ending - they couldn't decrypt the real ROM so they had to find and dump an unencrypted beta.

Just keep this in mind - bootlegs were made of the cheapest possible parts, to retain the most profit. No one's actively bootlegged a game in several years since there's no market for it anymore. EEPROMs and flash ROM have a certain service life, that's much shorter than a mask ROM.

If you have the capability to make your own ROMs and put them on SNK boards, you can use the MAME dumps and make a cart that is or near the same quality of a production cart - people do it all the time (see Ghostlop). A mass-produced bootleg cart isn't going to have the same quality put into it.

The problem is that original ones are cheap as hell, so why bother with fake shit that helped kill the Neo Geo? Plus the more bootlegs that are in the home MVS market, the most likely it is to have people selling bootlegs as originals, maybe by mistake.

I've purchased some chea[ boots and as previously mentioned they are often not perfectily working. Another aspect is that often the boots are offered at a lower cost which often can effect the percieved going rate of legitimate games.

Say no to boots

When I beat Garou on my mvs all I got was the credits, please do not tell me I have a boot. Is there suppose to be more.

One more time and you will be banned again, and this time it won't be for only a week. :shame:

Don't forget that if your average result is less that AAA on every match, after you beat Grant you just get credits. Well, after a really brief spiel. So are you fighting Kain or just Grant..? If you're fighting Kain, well, you're in trouble.

If it is a boot, that's really a shame, man. Garou has some of the best endings of any Neo game. :oh_no:

If you think it is a boot, and it's not too late, contact the person who sold it to you and get a refund. Garou should be enjoyed in its entirety, and dicks that rip it off should go unrewarded and then some. :blow_top:

But crack it open to see for sure. Take pics of the boards and post 'em in tech support, or at least describe every detail you can and get some info if you don't have a camera.

Wow.. another fucking retarded, non-search using stoooopid Billd thread.

I wonder if the next thread will be if you can change games in an MVS cabinet or if the system is "really" 24-bit.

It's the fact that some bunghole made it, and not some major company like SNK.

Can I use my MVS games on my home system? is there some kind of adapter that would enable this?
