Few expensive carts or many cheap ones?

When I first startet buying NGH carts I got the standard cheap ones (SS1, SS2, KOF 94, FFS). Later I realized that these games would not give me much joy (except for SS1, I actually like it more than part 2), so I bought a couple of more expensive games (LB1, RB2, SS3) and I feel I get more value for my money and will probably play these more expensive titles 10 times more than the other ones (which more than enough makes up for the price tag).

Anyway, I've noticed that many people who are getting into Neo Geo starts out with some of the older and cheaper titles (and many settle for only the old titles), and I have to say that these people really misses out of some of the most exciting games ever made! Personally I think the greatest Neo games came out in the late 90's (except for some older classics like Viewpoint), perhaps it's because I'm mainly into fighters though... Anyone else have any thoughts about this?

the early games had high production runs sold all around the country so they are cheap and easy to come by. the latter games like you said have some real gems like the slugs garou last blade etc. those games are all must haves for anyone with a neo collection but they werent as widely available so lower production run + everyone holding on to them = higher price.

in the end id have to go with a few high dollar carts over a bunch of cheapies

Yeah, I've noticed the older titles are a lot more common than the newer ones. A shame really that so many who was into the system in the early 90's missed out on the newer games

I made that mistake the first time I got an AES and wasted money on cheapies. Crappy games killed my interest in neo geo. Now I'd rather just wait till I have the money to afford the games I want.

I started like this, after I got SS2 I quickly got a couple more Fatal Fury, and Cyber-Lip; since then I have hardly bought any other then SS3, SS4(Which I traded for SVC Chaos) and find that the higher priced ones actually held my interest more mainly because I spent the cash on said large items I might as well play them, its kind of a hard concept at first "Why spend 200 dollars on a single game!?" But after you do it doesn't matter as much because you get a lot of fun out of the game you buy. Although if you have MVS and an AES you can juggle between the titles you want. Its a good balance.

I bet I would have much more fun buying MotW for NGH than I would have if I bought 6 random PS2 games... So it's defenitly worth it (ok, so MotW is like my fave game of all time, all thanks to Neo Geo :D )! When I buy an expensive game I also see it as an investment. If I'd get tired of it there's a good chance I can sell it and get my money back. I will get a MVS some time to get a hold of the much too expensive titles, but right now I don't see a problem with spending a couple of hundred bucks on a game that will be well worth it. What good is money if you don't use it? :loco:

I think this is a fairly common occurrence. I did it when I got my cab. I got World Heroes and SS1. And you know what, those games are awesome, but I bought them mostly for the nostalgia factor. I played both of those games in the arcades when I was very young. I think it's more worth it to save up for more expensive titles than just impulse buy cheap ones. Though, to me, it isn't a definite thing. There are some older, cheap games that are completely awesome. Last Resort (though, not cheap or easy to find for MVS or AES), Nam 1975, SS1 and 2, Baseball Stars...

i honestly prefer the older games like WH2, SS2, AOF1,2, Nam (god i love that game).

in the past i did fork out for more expensive games like LB1 & some recent KOF's, but whenever i did play my AES (which is not often) I found myself only playing the older games mentioned, so i sold off those more recent titles.

i would like to get my hands on a slug game for AES however, but the prices they go for are unjustifiable IMO, just the other day I was tempted to get a MS1 conversion off of ebay.

its all a matter of preference, some people on this forum are complete opposite of me & only like the newer games, but nostalgia is a factor (my AES & WH2 homecart iv'e had since 1994).

Even if one of those PS2 games was MotW? :D

I bought a few of the cheaper games, simply because they were cheap, but from the start, I really just went for the games that I wanted, irrespective of cost/age.

My collection is roughly 33% old-style / 66% snaplocks

IMO ever good collection has a nice balance between old a new games. Wether it is old or new, buy what you like. My AES, MVS, and Neo CD collection is roughly 50% old and 50% new..

Hehe, ports don't count, ok? :glee:

Don't get me wrong I don't hate the older titles and I know there are some great ones. I mentioned Viewpoint, and someone else mentioned Last Resort which is an awesome game! However, I feel the quality of the games are way higher with the newer titles.

Hah, ports totally don't count man. Besides, the port of MotW, while decent, wasn't perfect (I know, tell you something you don't know). Maybe it's just me, but I bought the MVS cart even though I had the DC version, and man I'm happy I did, even though it cost me about 80 bucks. Same thing with Last Blade 2. Hell, I couldn't even really get into the DC version, but now I'm eating the MVS with a spoon. Just seems that much more magical to me.

But yeah, you're right. May as well enjoy your money, as long as you're not too irresponsible. That's my motto, anyway. Though it is fun to be irresponsible sometimes... :D

Personally, I prefer the newer Neo games. In fact, it was SVC that made me really want to get an MVS in the first place. It just seemed so cool to me that there were new games coming out in 2003... I just had to get one. I still like the older games, but I'm in it for the newer stuff for sure. Those are the games (MotW, LB2, etc.) that are pure fuckin' art, man. :D

I always went with a few really nice carts rather than the cheap ones. Granted I first got a used AES back in '93 just to play Samurai Shodown 1 since I loved it so much (and was disappointed to see the white blood). After seeing the price tags for all the new games that were coming out, I switched to the CDZ for a minute. Then I came back to AES but mostly for the KoF's and LB1. SNK sure put out a lot of cheaper fluff games that aren't really worth playing more than once.

You buy whatever gives you the most bragging rights :D

Seriously, I think it's better to buy carts which you'd enjoy, as well as a few higher value ones, so that you not only get the pleasure of playing games you like, but you also have a bit of a valuable collection to feel good about.

My collection at the moment is about 60/40 in favour of old carts. This is due to my AES having 4 older carts with it when I bought it (FF2, FFS, SS2, AOF2). Since then I've bought ML, SS3, KOF 95 & 98, SSK3 and SvC.

I guess I like to have a balance.

The most expensive home cart I have is KOF 98, and I love the damn thing.

Cheap ones.

Most of the Neo Library has cheap games whatsoever.

Most of the cheapass games are a blast to play.

Quiz Chibi Marukochan is Golden-Asshole-expensive and worths shit to me.

you can't really call a KOF96-98 expensive when they sell in the 65-90 dollar range.

What constitutes old and new? Like, later than '95 would be new? My MVS collection is small (though, I haven't been buying Neo stuff for very long) but I have mostly gone for later games, I guess. The first two games I bought were SS1 and World Heroes (as mentioned above) and those were really the only old games I bought. A friend bought me Blazing Star for my b-day and I got S. Dodgeball and Metal Slug 1-3. So for me, new games outweigh old ones 5 to 2... But, I more just go for games that I know I will play a lot.

As for ports, I have MotW for DC and am absolutely dying to have it on Neo Geo. I played Last Blade 2 for the first time on DC last night and now I want that too... No port, obviously, will ever be able to match the real thing.

I find it more fun to buy the games I intend on playing. If they happen to be older games, so be it.

My collection is mvs, but most of my games are newer so to speak. The "oldies" in my collection are really King of the Monsters and Sengoku. I got those two cause I love the crap out of them. Some of those MVS carts can get up there as well, like my Metal Slug 3 and my Samurai Shodown V Special. Buy what you'll play, price be damned. If it's expensive, save for it, you know you'll get more enjoyment out of it since you really earned it.
