That looks like a box for the Old Style Joysticks.

Not sure -- perhaps one of the early box designs for the AES console? The boxes in these 2 photos are for the Mahjong Controller and the "old-style" stick (and the labels are marked "mahjong controller" and "controller," respectively), but bogsie's box doesn't have much of any indication of the contents on the label.

Its definitely a system box - notice the word controller missing from the wording. I know its similar in design but i have never come across this style of box before. I have seen the green/white boxed system which I understand was for rental purposes but I have never seen this style.

Forgot to add that this box does have the polystyrene inserts as per the green/white system box. Space for the console, controller, powerpack and leads is provided.

It's the same box that you have in your post. The box has styrofoam inside that holds the console, one old style joystick, AC adapter, and AV cable. Basically the same as the green system box just orange.

Didn't SNK have lots of trouble conforming to the AES case insert color scheme? Maybe that's the same deal here; just a lack of consistancy or standards.

AFAIK the original (rental) batch of JAPANESE NeoGeo was the green striped one, coded as 'NEO-0'.

The controller box designed for this first batch was still green striped, with no '330MEGA' black writing and was coded NGL-0 (NOT 'NEO-AEC').

The second Japanese batch of controller boxes was red striped, The but still no '330MEGA' black writing and still coded NGL-0 (NOT 'NEO-AEC').

On the very same level, we had the majaan controller, again red striped box, coded as NGMJ-0

Please note all these original boxes where designed for Japan only, and sported Japanese writing (kanas) also.

I have all this items in my possession. A red striped Japanese NEO-0 has never shown before my eyes btw.

Later the international boxes for NeoGeo came out, namely the red striped 330MEGA batch. Both system and controller, that is. Oddly enough, the system was quckly replaced by the sale box (the one we all know so well), while the controller always retained the red striped 330MEGA international version worldwide (yes, including Japan)

So when did the orange boxes come in to play?

Well, the red-striped '330-Mega' boxed controller (NEO-AEC) was designed for a wordwhile distribution: Japan, Asia and western market.

Possibly the red-striped '330-Mega' boxed SYSTEM (NEO-AES?) was just the same, but got a very short lifespan having been immediately replaced by the black box we all know.

As for know, what I've seen in term of boxes is:

1s) Green striped Japan-only NEO-0 system
1c) Green striped Japan-only NEO-0 controller

2s) missing
2c) Red striped Japan-only NEO-0 controller
2m) Red striped Japan-only NEMJ-0 mahjong controller

3s) Red striped internationl '330mega' NEO-AES system
3c) Red striped internationl '330mega' NEO-AES controller

4) Black box internation system (various releases)

***

All in all, the 3s is hard enough to be seen (I actually doubt it has ever been distributed in Japan, possibly it was an export only version) plus I wonder if a 2s ever existed, but again I doubt.
