I know it is a 3.6v 50mAh battery. Now I believe the 50mAh is the capacity of the batttery. If this is true, could I use any recharable 3.6v battery with at least 50mAh or higher? Lets say a cordless phone battery that is 3.6v but is 600mAh? I have a bunch of these and since they have wires on them, It would keep the battery away from the board. I don't see any reason why this would not work. :conf:

That should work OK, I would charge it up prior to installation.
Despite the difference in current rating, the trickle charge should keep it topped up imho.

If you really think about it, all you are doing is increasing the time the board can be off before the battery is going to die. I replaced the battery with a 3.6 volt 600mAh battery (cordless phone battery) and I was able to hot glue it on the outside of the board. Cheap fix and long lasting one at that!

When the backup battery on my Big Red 4 stops holding a charge, I plan on installing a standard two-pin connector (I live down the street from an electronics surplus shop) and using cordless phone batteries. NiCD isn't exactly perfect for this kind of thing, memory effect and whatnot, but for the amount of current we're talking about they'll be OK.

Everything I do, Neo-Geo or not, uses a standard connector of some sort. In the long run, it makes things a lot easier. Only the first replacement takes a long time. :) Replaced some corroded wires on rear harness of my Corvette with molex connectors that would fit a 5.25" computer drive. Did the same thing with the Neo's PSU, it's a rigged-up ATX PSU.
