Has anyone ever replaced a flyback?

Some of you may remember that not too long ago I ran into some problems with the monitor in my MVS cab. I have been searching for a replacement monitor. Unfortunately, I lost the auction for the last one I saw come up on eBey.

I was thinking it was just a blown cap. I looked at every cap on the PCB today and could not find any that were bad. Then I notice what looks like a melt down of sorts with the flyback. Is this part difficult to replace. Could its’ failure cause other components to fail along with it?

The cab still has its' original 25" Wells Gardner monitor. The monitor was built in 1991...15 years old now. Is a monitor this old worth the cost of a new flyback when I could get a good replacement?

They are really easy to replace. Just desolder about 7-10 points and remove it.

As Rez said, its fairly straight forward.

The crt will have discharged so no worries there (I always discharge as a matter of course even if I know its not charged, its a safe habit)

You will have to set up the focus and screen volts, turn the screen (bottom pot) fully anti clock then slowly increase untill the phosphors start to illuminate then back it off slightly. Its a good idea to do this with low ambient light.

Also check the horizontal output transistor is not short circuit.

If its been running into that faulty flyback transformer for a while there is a chance its packed a sad. Its not a big deal if it has.
