I have a Jaleco Pony Cab with a 29" monitor. It only contains the tube.

1. Can I use any monitor chassis that fits a 29" monitor to repair my current monitor?

2. Also I read somewhere Japanese monitors are measured differently. I am actually supposed to use a 27" monitor if I buy an american made monitor or a monitor sold here in the states. Is that true? (I measured my monitor and it measures 29" form corner to corner) ?????

3. And last but not least, I am using an MVS 1 Slot. Do I need a Regular, Medium, or High Resolution monitor? If I decide to buy a new or used monitor.

First off, Im not familiar with the Jaleco Pony Cab, I do not know what monitor or CRT is standard issue but here goes anyway:

1. No.
You can only run monitor PCBs/chassis designed to drive that specific CRT. You could not run an older (rounded corner) CRT with a monitor board designed to run later FST tubes irrespective of the CRT diagonal dimmension.

There are issues such as CRT electrode pin out (internal heaters, cathodes etc)and deflection angle. Also the deflection yoke has to be suitable, Ive had situations where the actual crt was suitable but the yoke didnt match the vertical output stage of the monitor pcb, ended up with lack of height so had to resort to a modification/hack of the vert output.

You must cross reference to ensure the CRTs are interchangable.
CRT interchangable=monitor PCB/chassis interchangable.
If they look the same they are usually interchangable, but its not a given.

2. I think there may be some confusion over viewable and actual here.

3. You need a regular low res (15 Khz) monitor for MVS

If you buy a high resolution monitor then it should be a Tri res monitor enabling you to use Low res(15khz),Medium res(24khz) and High res(31khz).

Go with the High res monitor If you can but all you need for MVS is low res.

If you can afford it and you think you might have the need for higher resolutions in the future then definitely go this way.

Thanks for everyones help. For some reason, I could never get or find clear answers when it comes to monitors. It sounds like the monitor size issue was incorrect. I need a true 29" monitor.

I plan on keeping it MVS, so I am going to start pricing monitors.

Thanks for helping an AES owner but MVS Noob.

I'm 90% sure you need a 27" monitor. Although this seems to be the question nobody knows.

The one thing that confussed me, is that form corner to corner my monitor measures 29". I thought that was the way to measure monitors, including television monitors.

Here are the measurements of my monitor.

Top to bottom: 18" 1/2

Left to Right: 24"

From corner to corner it's 29"

So can someone please tell me, do I need a 27" monitor or a 29" monitor?

Looyeddie,

I think you are right. I was looking at the specs at the Wells Gardner Website, and it looks like the measurements of a 27" monitor match my measurements. :)
