!ARCADE! Phantom Converter Sound Issues.......

I am almost certain that this issue has been covered before but I cannot find the thread. Anyway I have a U.S. AES system, unmodded in ANY way with a serial number of 15,000.

Anyway I use the Phantom to play MS1 and the graphics I think are ok, but the Sound is yech. Like when shit blows up, you get a staticy sound, like it tries to access the sound and instead it is missing. I Believe the sound is perfect for LB1 and Blazing Star but it is VERY pronounced in MS1.

Is this common for the converter or is something wrong?

Are there any problems when you play an AES game?

Have you cleaned the Phantom and your MS1 cart?

AES games work. Sometimes have to reset it. I believe the MS1 may need a cleaning but I have cleaned it twice. Maybe I need to open it up and blast air though it. Just a loose cart without a label.

It probably needs a more aggressive cleaning.
Follow this guide..... http://hardmvs.com/html/cleaning.htm

Also, give that Phantom a good cleaning while you are at it.

Welp, I spent the past hour cleaning the MVS Cart, the Converter, AND the Neo, all of which were quite dirty but then there was NO difference, none what so ever.

Oh well......

I used to have an AES with a Phantom-1

I had no problems with MS1 but Blazing Star was a different matter.
Corrupt graphics abound, to say the least.

Tried cleaning everything, still had no joy.

The solution (in my case, anyway) was highly unusual.
I made a case for my Phantom out of an AES cart case and the corruption stopped....

Don't know whether it was interference or what, but it worked like a charm after that.

Yep, use the pen rubber method to clean the contacts.

Contact Cleaner won't do anything if contacts are really dirty.

If the contacts are oxyded, use a fine sanded paper on them.

I would suggest a razor blade(be careful) scraping evenly, south to north on the leads to remove corrosion.

Blazing star works perfectly on my AES, the MS1 just has fuck up sound like when big shit blows up, just static.

You're sure it's not speaker distortion?
Does it happen when you play it quietly as well?

Does the dodgy sound happen through all outputs?
(AV out and headphone socket on AES. Phantom-1 Phono's)

Yep.constant and consistant.

Did you have this cart when you still owned your cab?
Have you tried it on any other system?

If the Phantom works with all your other games and you've cleaned everything thoroughly then I would tend to think that the cart is at fault.

You could try stripping the cart and giving the boards a good cleaning.
A good brush (like a camera brush) round all components and inbetween all the solder joints on the back of the boards, followed up by a good blast from an air-duster.
That's what I do to my dirty carts.

But then, I've never had the problem that you describe so this is only guesswork.

I had that problem with a SS4 cart, and I still have never got it to work right to this day.

I've done all that, I cleaned it up very well in fact, still sound issues.

I don't know what else to suggest, mate....

It may just be some random incompatibility or it may be a hardware fault that isn't readily identifiable.

neo_X7's comment points me more toward incompatibility than anything else.
If that is the case, then I can't see this problem being rectified. :(

hey supernaut,

I will say that I have had problems with some games in the past that did not want to work with my system I don't know, I think phantom-1 converters are kind of finicky.

I would still suggest either building a case for your phantom-1 or buying one. I made one out of a cheap aes game. I have had less problems while using the phantom with the case.

Oh yeah, btw. The headphone jacks of the arcade cab hadn't worked since I got it but I just took it apart and fixed that. Now I have it hooked up to some aiwa speakers along with the original speakers for the cab. Sounds great.

Good luck.

I think he should switch to MVS then.

Beside i all ways found the, Phantom 1 to be junk any ways.

It's too much of a, gamble any ways if you "don't" have the right.. AES it won't play perfect period :oh_no:

Same here, though I can't offer any explanation as to why they appear to work better. :spock:

Putting your phantom in a case is nice.
It's definitely better to look at and the Phantom will be protected but I couldn't recommend that you do this (and sac an AES cart) solely as a possible fix for your sound problem as it is highly likely that it won't be fixed.

Yeah, it always worked form me, I used a mini system with it, I miss my cab :(
