Hi guys,

I'm very very new to the NGS scene, although I've been interested in the console for years and year. Just picked up an AES in luverly condition and Fatal Fury Special. I've only recently discovered this forum, and the information here has been really really helpful.

I have a few questions to ask, if you don't mind! Please forgive my ignorance. Alternatively, if these questions have been done to death, I'd be grateful if someone could point me in the direction of a faq!

1) The hardware describes itself as 330megs max, but the newer games far exceed this. How is this possible?

2) I understand that Playmore now produces games for the system. Are these sold through ordinary retail? How would I get a 'new' game?

3) Why does Playmore's website advertise KOF'02 for about $350 yet these carts have been sold on ebay for less than $150. Can I take the latter to be standard 2nd hand values which are cheaper than the 'brand new' price from Playmore?

4) Should MVS ==> AES converted carts be viewed with suspicion in terms of their collectibility?

5) The graphics on the earlier games are markedly different from the ones that were produced much later (FFS looks awful next to KOF'02). Sure designers get better at making games, but the differences are huge. How is this possible? Was the system designed so well that it could be 'upgraded' through the newer carts?

6) This one is going to sound stupid, but: can anyone recommend a game which doesn't cost the earth, yet has nice graphics and a degree of collectibility? Fighting or shooting.

Thanks, guys!

1)

a)I`m not 100% sure, but the GIGA POWER that comes up on games like rb2`s boot screen has something to do with it, a programming thing that bypasses the 330 meg limit

or

b) I was just a buzz word, back when they started marketing the neo, I guess that they didn`t see the need for over 330meg carts

2)

Playmore doesn`t make new games for the neo hardware anymore. For new carts,
try the neostore over here, although their handling of orders has been sluggish.

3)

The ebay ones are 2nd hand.

4)

Generally people frown on conversions, because of the sac carts needed in the process and for the fact that said conversions have been advertized as original carts after being kitted out with repro manuals, and in some cases without them.

5)

Upgrade? I guess not. The reason playmore stuff has been called mediocre(Not my opinion for the simple fact that I do not own any of the newer kof´s, etc.) is probably the fact that these games have been churned out with fewer staff and a tighter budget and lazier developers than the SNK of yore

6)

I dunno, Last Blade (Jp version) or Viewpoint (Euro\US)

Thanks guys,

So, it would appear that I should stick to some of the older titles, shouldn't I, and maybe avoid the Playmore series of games because they may not be as 'purist'.

Last blade, Viewpoint and SS2? *Ack* the first two are a bit expensive aren't they! SS2 doesn't appear to be *too* expensive.

"The system's original specification for ROM size was up to 330 megabits, hence the system displaying "MAX 330 MEGA - PRO GEAR SPEC" upon startup. However, this was later enhanced on cartridges with bankswitching memory technology, increasing the maximum cartridge size to around 1 gigabit. These new cartridges also caused the system to display "GIGA POWER" upon startup, indicating this enhancement."

Especially if you're on a budget aswell as an MVS Garou cart can cost around $50 usd compared to the AES version which is around $400 to $500 usd for the same game just with a sticker, case, insert and a manual, but if you're into collecting then this won't change you're state of mind.

You guys are completely right, of course. Going the MVS route is a much cheaper proposition, but, unfortunately, I kinda am into collecting, so.... :D

If you really have the cash, then collect AES, and be willing to spend a fortune.

I just own a few reasonably priced gems on AES and I "collect" MVS, but only in the sense that I like my "collection".

I like having 5 shockboxes lined up with SS,SS2,SS3,SS4 and SSV in a row with printed inserts, but I don't buy SSVS cos of the price.

I think you can make a very attractive collection on MVS with BigBears Shocks and the inserts made by many of the fine members here.

A real AES collection will set you back $xx,xxx or maybe even $xxx, xxx if you must own everything.

I think, like you, I'm just looking for a few 'reasonably priced gems' on the AES. I don't loook to filling a bookshelf with carts!

The MVS carts are a lot cheaper, but from what I've seen, the hardware is painfully expensive. I'm guessing that this is justified by the software cost later, right?

The AES hardware is more expensive than the MVS hardware by a long shot, start off with a 1 slot, should hit you back around 100 shipped.

Lachlan, I've checked around (uhhh, not very well though) for MVS hardware, but I can't find any that would be $100 shipped!

Mind pm-ing me a link?

Thanks!

IMO you're better off with a two slot....espcially if you want it consolized. An example being, it is not very easy to change out the bios on the MV1C because it is soldered directly on the PCB. It also lacks controller ports. If you want a 1 slot I'd suggest you get a MV1F. It's small has controller ports and a socket bios. The MV2F, MV4F, and MV6F all have on board controller ports, socket BIOS, and stereo though the harness. If AES prices are a turn off I suggest you get a consolized MVS or a supergun.

Got my 1 slot for 75$ shipped from ebay. Full 2 slot gold cab for 350 shipped. If I had the choice to consolize one of them it would be the 2 slot...but I don't have a choice since the 2 slot is NOT gonna come out of the cabinet. Just can't fathom the idea of a 1 slot in a 2 slot cab...

Not at all. What could be more hardcore than owning your own MVS cab...or a 2, 4 ,or 6 slot CMVS?

I suppose that's true, but I don't have space in my apartment for a cab, so I'm going to have the board and supergun lying on the floor..........

The thing that really gets me is that buying MOTW on AES can buy me a full MVS system with MOTW and most of the MS series...

This is why I love MVS so much more.

Call me a moron (that was NOT an invitation please!) but I can't find any DIY site which tells me how a complete newcomer can put an MVS together (video/audio/power supply). Am I not looking hard enough?

Problem is, the MVS board itself doesn't appear too expensive, but superguns are quite quite costly. Consolised MVS systems don't appear to be too common.

Sickening thing is, I want to play the MS series to get it out of my system...then determine whether it's worth paying AES prices for it.

Just get a cab... There is nothing that can replace the arcade experience ;) . I don't know how much superguns go for, but a cab can be had for anywhere from $300 to $400, without a board.

Aaron: I'd love a cab, but I seriously have a really small apartment! Heck, I need space to sleep, man! This is why the AES is nice...it's slim and easy to tuck into corners when not in use...

Lee: Thanks very much. I've been on here for about a week now and it's a wealth of information...and depression...I look at some of the collections the members have and my PATHETIC collection of FFS and Nam'75 mocks me.

Some of you here...you have gorgeous collections. In fact, I'd say nearly everyone here has gorgeous collections...well, except for some of those with romz :P
