I've just received a kof'98 today and when I oppened it I was kinda surprised that this board looks this way. It looks to unprofessional in my oppinion and different from all mvs games i saw. Though all the chips are original I'm not yet sure. Also have some differences from the aes cart my friend have. The 1st is that Rugal Bernstein doesnt say "reppuken" just a simple "ha" when he deflects his fireball ( repuken).
2nd is that Omega Rugal doesn't say "Ikuze" in the begining of the round.
I've uploaded it to the SGR. Ceck it out and tell me if it is or not original.

The board looks legit to me. Could it be a Korean censored version?

I'd say it's legit. Even if you didn't have the pic, I'd think it was legit... KOF98 wouldn't be bootlegged very much as it's a cheap game as it is, so the profit wouldn't be worth the hassle to most bootleggers IMO.

I am thinking like Murray...
I'd say that it's the Korean version. Still legit though.

Looks legit to me, KOF98 is a neogeo game known to use a P1 like that. I also think its the Korean version as thats known to have censored sounds for some characters.

Well, it is cheap NOW, but back in 98 when it was produced and was a big success in the arcades I'm sure it costed some $$$, so bootlegging it was more than profitable. Most if not all bootlegs of any old game were produced at the same time as the original game as that's the peak of their short life in the arcade. Nobody would bootleg any old MVS game now, but those old bootlegs still float around.

And I agree the game looks legit, most likely is the Korean version with the changed voices.

Looks good.

I don't think the contacts are dirty.
It looks like they've been sanded.

Why the hell would they censor the voices?
Are they saying nasty things?

OK

I did found that in the opening there are some voices that are not in my friend's aes version.
Well, being korean or not I´ll get rid of it. I don't like censored games. And changing it to japanese via uni-bios doesn't make it uncensored.
If anyone is interested in it just pm me.

Can someone let us all in on what voices are changed and in what way? Have they been removed or substituted?

Can't imagine why they would have changed the voices, though I am aware of the additional vocals during the static noise in the intro. Though that seems to be more a quirky touch than anything censorship related :)

Then again...anyone know what it's saying at that point? :conf:

edit: ARGH! I just finished reading the first post, properly this time, so that partly clears up my "what voices are altered" question. I wonder whether Rugal's utterings sound a bit like something offensive in Korean??? :p

If you want to add the missing sounds back you will need to change the M ROM only. Both the censored and uncensord M ROMs are used in MAME.

GOING AWAY

I hadn't played it a lot before but yesterday was the final test. And to my sadness is to bad...
It have no single voice for any special move or even taunts. At least Rugal's laugh when using his DM is ok. No problem I found someone who want it and it will be going away today. I will finally buy a complete one. *With all voices.

Hrmm...I think you may be overstating it a tad man!!

I have a copy too (I'm pretty sure it's the same revision) and I hadn't noticed any other deficiencies in the voice department

Why would you be so pedantic about Rugal anyway? Surely you don't use him in vs play???? :spock: :shame:

I can't think of any other vocals missing on the remaining roster and I have an AES copy in addition to my MVS one to compare.

This is startin' to look like a collector vs gamer scenario LOL

Anyway, great freakin fighting game at the end o da day, so enjoy it to the fullest ma boy! :buttrock:

As I said " It have no single voice for any special move or even taunts" means the whole game not just Rugal. Or will be everything ok to you when u use Iori's "asobi warida" and just hear a single sound "yah" and all. Using Ryo Sakazaki Koo ken and he says also a "yah" or doing his ryko ranbu and also another yah...Yah"
Its freaking for someone who loves all the voices and provocations.
I am a gamer collector. It can be even a non label cart, as is my savage reign that costed me 2 U$. It needs to be fully working. Since they are not to sell just for me to play and be happy with my games.
I'll post a pic of my mvs collection soon so you can see what i am talking about. :drool_2:

Errr..DAAYYUUMMMM!!! That's not like mine at all. I've never heard of such a deficiency in a Neo game before, that just crazy!!! :eek_2:

Certainly get rid of it man, sounds like it's just not worth the trouble. Unless you can send it to someone to desolde the M1 chip, re-program it with the complete binary and resolder it again...yeah I know it sounds like a lot of messing around, but it could work out fairly cost effective if you know someone with the equipment to do the job.
