Finally got my MVS 4-slot working... YAY!!!!

It obvious that the monitor is showing some age though... eventually I'll have to replace it.

Right now though there's a little board pinned inside the cab right underneath the joysticks. It controls the settings for the monitor, but I only have three choices:

Vertical size
Horizontal position
Black level

I suppose this can be expanded to control more of the pictures' quality, but I don't know if it's worth bothering with.

When the black level is all the way up the color bleeding is really, really bad. It has to be set almost to zero and even then there's alot of ghosting around text and finer details are lost... and with it set so low the overall coloring is really muted.

This monitor isn't toast yet, and I'll use it till it really dies then replace it. I just want to know if there's anything I can do to improve my situation.

:help:

Well, one thing that can't hurt and has a fairly good chance to improve picture quality is a cap kit. In case you don't know, a cap kit is simply a bag of capacitors that people like Bob Roberts sell. These capacitors are to replace a majority of the ones on the monitor chassis. If you're not sure about working around monitors, BE CAREFUL as they can contain some VERY nasty voltage. Can you tell us what model of monitor you have? If it's a dedicated Neo Geo with a 25" monitor, all 3 I've had personal experience with came with a Wells Gardner K7000 series monitor. Those monitors had that small board near the front for adjusting the monitor, but they have 6 different adjustment pots and not just 3. My buddy got a 2 slot at auction this weekend and he had a color bleed. I fixed it by adjusting the contrast knob on the remote board.

It is a wells gardner... 25K7191

There's the three pots I mentioned up front but in the back there's a whole host of options:

the host of standard TV style controls... Contrast ect...

right next to the gun is the RGB drive and cutoff settings

elsewhere are two other pots one for focus and one for screen

please advise on next move, I'll hope to adjust this tonight after work.
I'll see if I can dig up some info on that monitor too though layman's terms from someone who's done this type of thing is always priceless

thanks :buttrock:

Ok I got most of the settings looking much better, but the overall color intensity is pretty low.

Maybe I'm kidding myself thinking this 15 year old arcade monitor will look anywhere near as good as the screenshots here or anywhere else.

Anyway, couple of things left:

Should I go anywhere near the six RGB drive and cutoff knobs? The owners manual I found makes it seem like a mortal sin to touch those things, but it's gotta do something for the color intensity.

It seems the horizontal size control doesn't work, I've moved it considerably in both directions with no effect.

I should look into getting the thing recapped, but I'd also like a Unibios and a pause button installed, hey anyone want to buy a factory sealed Tales of Destiny?

Hell yes you should. Out of all my machines, only one I've never touched, that's because it was the only one I was pleased with when purchasing. All the others I've messed with. Feel free to do the same. I mean, what's the worse that could happen? You ruin a monitor that's past its prime anyhow? You're fine, don't worry.
