What kind of modifications would you need to make if you wanted to plug an ST-V board into your Neo Geo? I am interested in doing so but, obviously, don't want to ruin anything. It would be awesome if you didn't need to make any modifications... *crosses fingers*

Any help is very much appreciated.

Ooops, unless you mean ST-V motherboard and rom into a neogeo cabinet.( I thought you meant ST-V cartridge into a neo motherboard. )Thats different, thats doable. I think some modifications will be needed; look for the jamma pinout of ST-V boards, and compare to the MVS pinout on hardmvs.com

Hahaha, I'm new, but not that new.

I'll try looking up the pinout for ST-V. Thank you.

A 'true' Neo cab is mostly Jamma, with the exception of -5v (Neo doesn't use it), and the audio (Neo puts stereo over the harness, Jamma is mono).

When I had my Us and Japanese ST-V boards(just sold them) all I did was plugged them into my Big Red 4 Slot Stereo Cab and they worked fine.(Plug & Play)
Sometimes soft dip settings on the board need to be changed to run certain games.(or they will not come up)

There is a ST-V manual on this Page..Be Carefull as I clicked on the PDF manual link it blacked out my computer....(A pop up apears that is needed to be closed when reaching the site)

Hmm... I see. Thanks for your info everybody.

Chris, if you plugged an ST-V board into a U.S. Neo, shouldn't it in theory work in all Neos? I have a JP cab, which is why I ask.

Basically, and I know this must be a common reason, I want to play Radiant Silvergun the way it was meant to be played. If I have to do all this complicated stuff, I'll just suck it up and get the Saturn version...

Then there's the button issue. Don't dedicated ST-V cabs have 6 buttons?

Yes..as far as I know in all MVS cabs wired for Stereo(2-4-6 slot)....thus a 1 slot cab may be wired for mono...
I just used to plug the board in the Big Red with a game and it played.
Radiant Silvergun is better played on a Japanese ST-V mobo as there are more buttons to use(much better)and the MVS has all the buttons you need.

I could never get the ST-V boards to work in my Candy cab(4 slot-Stereo)..Because the cab is a lil bis when it comes to switching boards.
Everything else worked in it though.
One reason why I sold my F-3 and ST-V stuff is due to that,AS it's a pain in the butt to put these boards in my big red and neo gold cab..(plus I've gotten lazy :tickled: )

Yeah, I heard that if you play RSG on an american board it dumbs the controls down like nobody's business. I obviously don't want that. ST-V cabs only have 4 buttons?

I've been entertaining the idea recently about possibly acquiring a Sega Astro City cabinet. Of course, that wouldn't be for a while... But, would I need to make any mods to that to use an ST-V board in it?

I hear you about the size of the candy cabs. It is very space efficient, and thus uses EVERY bit of space inside the cab. Mine came from the factory as a 4 slot and a 4 slot board BARELY fits in it!!!!! And yes, it is a pain to switch boards. I got my board and mounted it to this piece of wood that I put together and that was a pain. Then a couple days later, my unibios came and I had to take it all apart and put it back together again! It was very disheartening... Hahaha.

I'm not sure if the ST-V cabs come with more then 4 buttons..As far as all the games I had and played they used 4 buttons or less.
I forget what the Control panels look like on an ST-V Cab..I have to go find some pics.
Of you get a Sega Astro City cabinet...It would depend on the wiring in it..and it's current button layout.(how many buttons would it have)
Put it this way...Lots of cab scould be used, you'd just have change say a few wires to make it mono or stereo if ot wasn't set-up already.
Most of any of that info you can be helped with here when you do get the cab.
If you wanted to have a 6 button CP in the Sega Astro City cabinet.,providing it didn't come with one then you'd have to drill the holes and add the buttons and wiring.

I do see that some games do use 6 buttons on this page.
http://www.hardmvs.com/STV/ST-Vgame.htm
So,I guess if you wanted to play those particular games you'd have to add buttons to a Astro City Control panel if it only came with 4..And that would mean adding button wiring to the jamma harness... I guess,if there is no extra harness that's needed.

As far as playing ST-V games on the MVS cab..It depends on the game.
Lots of the games only use 2-3 buttons only.

heh..since I compiled the info on the hardmvs page I gues I should pipe in.

1) If you are swapping out a multislot neo board for an ST-V board you will have sound issues as the multiboard neo uses different pins for sound on the harness than standard boards. One slots should be a simple swap though. Alternatively if your board uses the 4-pin stereo connection on it, the ST-V uses the same plug...easy solution.

2) If you are just swapping in an STV buttons 1, 2, 3 will work right out of the gate. If the game supports more than 3 buttons than a kick harness will be needed (just like CPS2) and it will have to be wired up seperately.

Thanks for your help everybody.

I think I'm going to wait a while before I get into ST-V stuff. I'll be bankrupt in no time if I get into it now, what with just getting into Neo Geo not too long ago too :P

All right, I think I'm ready to resurrect my ST-V idea.

Thanks RevQuixo for your info.

So, will I have to add that -5V line to use an ST-V board in my cab then?

As for the button situation. I'm not going to alter the CP on my Neo Geo. I mainly want an ST-V for a few shooters. I can't really see getting into it to the extent that I'm into Neo Geo... RSG has about the most complex control scheme of any shooter, so if that only uses 3, I'm not too worried about any of the others.

I know this must be a stupid question, but how do you tell what pins are for sound?

you don't need -5v. You should have at least +5v 3.0A, +12v 1.5A. At least that's what the manual says I think.

What about monitor issues...? Radiant Silvergun is a vertical shooter. Do you have to rotate the monitor?

While it's true that it's a vertical shooter you still play iT "yoko", or horizontal or whatever. Do try RSG with an English bios once, the few weapons you have have been modified and the Engrish intro is quite fun.

I see. Thanks for the info.

When I bought my Neo Geo cabinet, the guy said, "Don't just go plugging whatever board in there you want. There will be sound issues and it will blow the amp." But, if you don't need -5V for ST-V, why can't I just hook it up and play?
