If it doesn't go to cross-hatch, it means the mobo isn't powering on at all, roms are completely shot, or the video signal isn't getting from the mobo to the monitor.

Do you have a multimeter? If so, check the JAMMA harness and see if the mobo is getting its +5V and +12V.

from examining what works (monitor, flourescent- both ac powered) and what doesn't (mobo - dc powered) I'd say power supply as well. Do the lights in the coin door turn on? (those are dc powered as well.)

I'f I'm not mistaken, I'd say that the power setup in there is a bob roberts setup... to make it REALLY easy on yourself... just get another power supply off him. http://homearcade.org/BBBB/parts.html What you will want to get is the "Switching Power Supply". It goes for $25 plus shipping. One quick thing though... when you have power running, there should be a little red indicator light on the power supply itself. If it is not on, then it is surelly your power supply or wiring TO the power supply.

You might want to check the fuses before placing that order, and using a multimeter to check the voltage would be a good idea. If you don't have a multimeter, nows the time to buy one.

if the fuse was blown, he'd have no negative ac voltage ;)

If you had a spare computer power supply around, you could probably hack that up to do some testing.

I wouldn't reccomend modifying a power supply to someone new electronics. For one, you'll have to solder one of the wires to a contact on the pcb in the power supply to let you turn the power supply on without a computer (unless it's an AT psu instead of ATX). When I modded my first computer psu, I think I shocked myself like 4 or 5 times :loco: while trying to find a good contact for the start wire.

I was thinking he could just use a small piece of wire to jump it on the outside. I can't remember the exact wires though. I think it was PS On to PG, or ground; something along those lines. Google would help find more info.

To do that, I think the easiest way would be to get a scart cable and modify it if you can... otherwise, you'd have to find something that would convert a high res 31khz to low res 15khz.

you do realize that that's well over $100... though, I guess it'd work. with the jpak, you shouldn't need to hack any controllers, as it already does for you.
