Agreed, except for the last part.

SNK moves from 15 year old hardware to hardware that creates some beast looking 2D games, and all they do is copy and paste the sprites whilst creating some of the worst goddamn backgrounds in Slug history. Un-inspired and drab, right on par with 4.

What a fucking waste.

I'm sure it will still be fun and all, but the old sprites look so damn flat against the slick pre-rendered backgrounds.. Whats the point of switching to a more powerful hardware if your not going to fully utilize the potential. Why not animate the characters from scratch and make them bigger and more detailed? I'd love to see some zooming on a MS game..

looks very nice. I dig ralf and clark and the new BGs.

I'm also interested in the gameplay tweaks.

PS: it's not fair to judge the backgrounds from pics. there was a movie showing Ralf walking in a grass field and there was a fleet of birds flying behind. looked very nice. They are definitely making improvements in that department. That, and you should be thankful to see another 2D shooter in this age.

Can't say I agree with your logic. We've had, for the most part, the same sprites in the Slug games for years and years. Slug 5 was great in re-invigorating the series with new blood (new Slug vehicle, different enemies), and yet all I see here are the same sprites from ancient hardware meshing incredibly badly with some new looking backgrounds.

It's just lazy, pure and simple.

I think the problem with the shot above is the shadows, but it's not that big of a deal.

Overall I think it looks pretty nice, and I like their logic of keeping the style/sprites from the original games while giving the backgrounds a makeover. I personally don't want them to change the sprties as I think it just wouldn't be the same if they did. By just changing the backgrounds you aren't losing that Metal Slug atmosphere.

The new slugs and enemies look pretty good too. Bearing in mind this is still in development, I am looking forward to it a lot. Just hope they make some successful changes in the gameplay department. That is my concern. Not whining because they have recycled old sprites...

everything ive seen on the AW looks really SAD. all the snkplaymore releases look total shit and ugly. only game ive seen that actually looked decent was hokuto no ken, and thats not even snkp but sammy. i hope they'll leave the aw alone and start working on a new next gen arcade system like segas new lindbergh system so we can all see these ugly sprites again for some more years to come. wish they would make a new fatal fury or KOF game like hokuto evrything new.

Metal Slug is Metal Slug. It's a bit early to say, but since I enjoyed all the previous iterations of the series, I will probably enjoy this one as well. The shadows don't bother me that much.

It has been said many times by SNKP themselves that the main reason for abandoning Neo Geo and going to AW is to prevent piracy. If MVS titles weren't bootlegged in a matter of days and emulated in a matter of weeks they would continue releasing those games for Neo Geo. Another story is that they could also take the chance to improve new graphics...

I've been hearing about MSG 6 for a while now, I'm still clueless is there a release date on it or is it some working project by snkplaymore. Someone bring me out of this enigma. Also I'd like to point out that yes razzle dazzle graphics are nice, but gameplay is still king.

I don't know what you're all whining about. As far as I've seen and heard both NGBC and SS tenka seems to be really good games, according to my eyes they look good also.

MS6 and KOFXI seems like a step up for sure.

Yeah, gameplay's the major key and all, but if they're developing on a far more advanced platform than the NG, then why not at least take more advantage of it? People who say graphics don't matter are just full of it, IMHO...with graphical enhancements, yes, the game can be made a lot more fun.

If Contra III played just like it did, but looked like an NES game, it wouldn't have been NEARLY as amazing as it was at the time.

Without graphical evolution, there would be limited enhancements to gameplay as well. If everything was like it was in 1990, a whole dimension of gaming would be left out -- literally.

I just think it's pathetic and lazy as hell for not only Playmore, but fans as well, to say "Hey, what reason is there for us to up the graphics now that we have a chance to create some really mindblowing visuals? Let's just give 'em new stats, some bland ass looking backgrounds, and yeah..that's a, that's a wrap for today."

If people didn't care about graphics, then the Metal Slug series would have looked just as "pretty" as Cyber-Lip.

I strongly believe that gameplay beats graphics any day, but in this particular case, I think that it could add a whole new level of excitement to see all the explosions and mayhem of Metal Slug in a well animated, hi-resolution format.

The problem is, creating hi-quality animation for video games generally takes a large budget, and I don't think SNKP is financially strong enough yet to put that kind of money into creating "niche" titles for the arcades.

Graphics involve more than high resolution and low resolution. it has animations, style, details ..... etc.

the slug games already look amazing IMO. redrawing all the sprites would require a lot of time and efforts and a lot of money is involved here. I don't think SNKP can afford that ATM and I don't think it's worth it ......... well, for them at least.

Nice BG's, hope they take full use of parallax.

Sprites need to be hi-res. As for redraws... I don't trust Playmore to do it right, so maybe going "KOF Neo-Wave" is the lesser evil.

Shit like this make me want an Atomiswave now. It just feels odd paying hundreds of dollars for hardware that is somewhat like a ROM-based Dreamcast.

MVS/AES should not have died...

Regardless of the old sprites, I like what they are doing here with the new sprites. No one seems to have mentioned this, but that boss looks awesome, and some of the other stuff (donkey slug, spider-like alien, walker slug) look excellent too. Let's not forget Ralf and Clark. I am looking forward to seeing more of this.

If only the dreamcast were still alive... I bet it would be so easy to port atomiswave games over to dreamcast. I cant wait for any rendition of this game though. Metal Slug series are my all time favorite shooter series. I wanted to get them all on Neo Geo CD when I first got the system but they only made MS 1 and MS 2 for it :spock:

With all the sprite-reusing by SNK Playmore these days, you have to wonder how a completely new game like KOF Maximum Impact ever gets made (I'm looking forward to the sequel). Personally, I would like to see a lot more completely new, original titles. Yes, I would love to play another Slug too, new graphics or not, but perhaps some of you are forgetting how these franchises came to be in the first place. When the first Metal Slug was made, all of the sprites and graphics had to be made from scratch, and it was a very well-tuned game. That wasn't a special thing back then, and Metal Slug 2 was a significant upgrade. Why can't that kind of effort go into new titles anymore? I think the answer is lack of financial resources.

Actually, that's the funny thing. KOF didn't really use very high rez backgrounds, on the DC at all. In fact, it was the Marvel vs. Capcom 2 that used the high rez backgrounds. The Dreamcast KOFs used a lower resolution on them, thus didn't appear quite as inconsistant in looks as the Marvel game did.

In addition to the A, B, and C buttons that were respectively used for shooting, jumping, and throwing grenades, Metal Slug 6 uses D and E buttons. The D button is used in combination with the A button to do a special close-up attack (which seems to be different from the automatic knife slashes when an enemy is nearby), and it can also be used in combination with the C button to throw away the weapon you're holding, while the E button is used for weapon changing.Weapon changing sounds perfeK! :smirk:

You mean on the character select screen? It's always been a joke for the portraits in the select screen to make the characters look like shit. Fio's always looked like a guy in the select screens, to me.

The old portraits are caricatures. This are just plain shit. SNK cannot make Metal Slug, instead of tarnishing its name further, they should make something else. But then they can't rehash sprites.

I'm quite pissed off that this game wasn't developed for the MVS/AES, apart from the selection screen (looks v high res) nothing I've see would challenge the older hardware, 1 new game a year wouldn't have been too bad for now our dead friend. When snklame0r moved to Atomiswave wasn't one of the reasons to allow for better sprites? What the fuck is happening here?
