How did your love for arcade gaming in the home get started? Mine was with the Neo Geo itself. I was at Gemens house and say he had a big red cab and knew I needed to get one for myself. Now I am without and am thinking of getting back into arcade gaming at home.

Also, how and where did you learn how to maintain these machines/PCB's/ETC? Are there any good sites that teach how to maintain the boards and gear? I know how to solder, but where did you go to learn about all the pinouts, issues, and caretaking for all the games? How did you find out what system (ie System 246) needs to work at home and also for the other arcade type systems?

Thanks!
Fred

I was bored one day, the the rest is history. All bad joking aside, I just wanted to relieve those great experiences that I had at the arcade when I was a kid (called nostalgia).

About maintenance and stuff, I just do web searches.

After mame I found this place. To find this place I had to find the neo. This place does wonders for the pocketbook.

No really though, I love arcade games and there just really isn't anywhere for me to play at. I have to goto Chuckie Cheese's just to play World Series Baseball. :oh_no:

I belonged to a game trading site called ugtz.com. Chainsawyak belonged to that site, and we went to the same highschool. We each had some pretty crazy collections in their own right (I suppose it was us both owning Neo systems that was the original head turner, considering we lived so close... I had a pretty sizable famicom collection at the time, too), so we started talking about our wares. I was curious to see his Nova in action (I couldn't really understand much about it by reading online), so he invited me over and after one jam session I was hooked on superguns. I could finally have something practical to play all those arcade games I loved. That's roundabouts how it happened. I'm a bit fuzzy.

I miss that guy.

Learning the tech stuff is all about experience... buying tons of different boards and talking about them with other arcaders.

I knew when I played Neo Geo for the first time in a deli/arcade that I wanted one. A little over 10 years after that, I finally got one :)

getting a supergun because it was the cheapest way to play all the old games that still get me way more excited than any new releases. Then I saw pics of candy cabs and fantasized...came across a guy locally who had some...and here I am

I too am getting a supergun. I am sending the first payment this Friday to Dean for one of his awesome custom superguns. Then I plan on getting lots of arcade PCB's to start a collection. I totally want to be able to play the originals at home!

I build my supergun for the exclusive purpose of playing alien vs predator which at the time was unemulated. Since then I never stopped collecting

im a shmup nut and after years of collecting videogames i was running kinda low and needed a new platform, saw screens of Outzone and learnt of batrider/bakraid games and decided to get a supergun.

learnt the ins and outs of the buisness and now 2 years later i can fix pretty much anything from japanes PCB kits to broken microswitches.. sadly my arcade interest meant the death for my videogames collection and nowdays its just gathering dust on my shelves..

I got into emulation first, then decided to take the plunge and go for the real deal.

Heh, me too. I also did a trade there with Chainsawyak (got my Final Fight PCB from him). Cool dude in my book (and a lucky bastard for getting to see The Misfits live in concert :buttrock: ). Speaking of him, how come he doesn't post here on these forums anymore? He used to write quite a lot back on Neo Alec's toxic green boards ...

A good friend of mine won an arcade machine on ebay and he asked me if I wanted to go with him to the guy's warehouse to pick it up w/ him and some of his coworkers. He got Midway's company arcade truck (w/ hydraulic lift & arcade dolly) for the trip so he told me that I should bring some cash in case I saw a machine I wanted. Brought about 2k in cash (wasn't sure how much the cabs were gonna cost). Boy was it fun running around the guy's THREE WAREHOUSES. We went to each warehouse drooling and reminiscing. The last warehouse he had was simply amazing with hundreds of cabs. At the end of the day I came away with a 25" dynamo Super SF2 Turbo, a 25" Samurai Showdown 2, a 19" Shinobi cab and a couple MVS carts. After that, for the next year, I went cab crazy (until I ran out of room) scouring the internet and local ops for machines.

It started with mame, toyed with the idea of setting up a mame cab, then all of a sudden came across a whole bunch of cabs at a givaway price, like US $100 for over a dozen cabs including the twins (that was for the whole lot :))

Same as you.

I never though about having an actual cab in my house, I mean I never seriously though about it, for space and price reasons.

On the other hand, NeoGeo represented a true arcade at home experience, specifically designed for the home environnement.

Thus NeoGeo has always been as a Gold Phoenix to me. :)

I'm almost done with my CPS2 collection (just need MvSF and Progear and I'm done!), which was the whole reason I got into arcade collecting. Oddly enough, I almost never touch my MVS stuff now... CPS2 gets all my attention.

The Saturn ports were good but I always got tired of reading of removed frames of animation, arranged music, etc.

I also like collecting things. I just need to decide what I want to move onto next after CPS2. I was thinking of CPS3 but the battery changing procedure worries me.

Yeah, there just is something about the NEO GEO that has me coming back for more. I can't wait to get back into it again!

I actually got my 1st cab when I was in 7th grade. It was an old WWF Superstars game (one of my favs). For me the real collecting started with emulation. I had a craving to play WWF Wrestlefest one day and started looking for anything I could find online. That's when I found Raine; the emulator that would change my life. I soon got more and more into emulation and before long was a Mame junkie. Man I remember how cool it was to see Mortal Kombat emulated (had to play it with no sound so it was playable on my old pc hehe). Mame was great and all, but it still didn't emulate (at the time) one of my all time favorites, Konami's X-Men. I figured out how you could swap out JAMMA boards and before long had X-Men and NBA Jam running in my old WWF Superstars cab. Shortly after I got a supergun from Great Western trading. It wasn't until the summer of 03 that I got into buying cabs. I just happend to contact a local guy that was into collecting them and that got me hooked into buying them. The rest is history. :buttrock:

I guess it first started back in, oh I don't know, probably 1992 or so. My brother told me about a system that one of his friends had that was $600 and for which games were $200. I didn't believe him. He said it was called "Neo Geo". My mother took me to arcades a lot back then and I was positively addicted to World Heroes. I know people bash it, but I still love that game... It never occurred to my 8 year old mind that the Neo Geo at the arcade that held multiple games you could select from and the Neo Geo system my brother told me about were the same thing. Hahaha.

Jump to 1999 or so. My friend was selling all of his Saturn stuff and I bought Metal Slug off of him. Metal Slug came to define the pure fun game for me. After I found myself snatching up every Metal Slug and KOF port I could get my hands on, and putting (literally) hundreds of hours on Cardfighter's Clash, I knew that one day I would have to have the system that defined SNK.

Now, it's October 9, 2005. Later today, I should be going to pick this up:

MAME.

For us younger folks, it's always going to come back to mame.

With out MAME, the idea of playing arcade games at home seemed like an impossibility for everyone but the obscenely rich and the crazy.
