I have a friend in Japan with a mac who wants to send me music files. I am guessing they dont have winrar or winzip in MAC. What would be a good software for them to use to send me music files? And what is a good software for me to send files to her? If I send her Winrar can she extract it?

Macs can accept any kind of music file (such as .mp3, .wav, .aac, .aif, etc...). Also, Macs can also natively extract .zip and .rar files. So sending a music file from Windows to Mac should be no problem.

However, for a Mac user to compress files into a .zip archive, they'll need the Mac program ZipIt. The files created on this program can be opened by Mac or Windows users

Send the music in .mp3 or .mp4 format. It's by far the most compatible between the two systems.

winzip/winrar/winace are also free... you just get a popup saying that the trail period has been over for x amount of days... but it's still completelly functional after the expiration.

If the files are mp3 is there any point in compressing it anyways as its not going to save much bandwidth.
